rogerdpack··on Big Tablets are Coming
Did I miss it in the article where "big tablets" actually liberate the "forgotten worker" from the shared work space? How does that work? :)
rogerdpack··on 24 days of Rust – Rayon
What about maintainability here, how would you rate it vs. (go, python, etc.)? I.e. coming into a new code base, etc?
rogerdpack··on Golang: sub-millisecond GC pause on production 18gb heap
Here's one comparison with G1:

https://blog.pusher.com/golangs-real-time-gc-in-theory-and-p...

where G1 still had some reasonably large pauses FWIW. Which is surprising isn't its billing to not do that? But FWIW.

rogerdpack··on The Ruby+OMR JIT
I use jruby on my hobby projects at time (GUI support is great!) however...the startup time is...always...so...awful...it is truly painful. I'm basically moving on to either crystal or go now, it just wasn't worth it anymore.
rogerdpack··on The Ruby+OMR JIT
One thing I do like is that porting code from ruby to crystal to javascript is actually somewhat possible. FTW.
rogerdpack··on Universal Basic Income Will Accelerate Innovation by Reducing Fears of Failure
I don't know what the right answer is. I'm just really afraid that if you toss "some people" 1.5K/month, that they don't have to earn, they may use it to buy drugs and then where are we?
rogerdpack··on One Dollar Glasses – Help for 150M people
If they really want this to go wide spread, they should make a way for locals to "make money" on the machines, like they can resell them for $2

then it could spread and be self-sustaining, and everywhere would have $2 glasses, which is actually somewhat affordable, even in developing countries.

My only other concern is what about astigmatism? Are they teaching the people that distribute it to accomodate for that (like "2 hour optometrist training" LOL)

rogerdpack··on One Dollar Glasses – Help for 150M people
Last time I ordered from (them or their competitor) they asked for PD (pupillary distance) is that enough or are the prescription ones still better?
rogerdpack··on The Busy Person’s Lies
The book "your money or your life" would content that because work is exhausting you, in essence, it is "costing you" the work hours plus the hours to recoup. So count those all as work hours now...the real cost as it were :)

But it's also possible that you're just relaxing because you can or what not, dunno. Cheers!

rogerdpack··on Universal Basic Income Will Accelerate Innovation by Reducing Fears of Failure
Interestingly, I was about to make a related (?) comment, that I think it's important to think hard about the effect it has on some people that they are "provided for fully" by the government.

The people that I've met who have gotten addicted to drugs, and even committed suicide, were actually those on the dole.

Not sure why.

If the government lets people stay at home and "engage in addictive behavior" (which we humans tend to do) sometimes they degenerate to harder and harder stuff, and even suicide. They're not happy. Are we doing this people a service?

rogerdpack··on Universal Basic Income Will Accelerate Innovation by Reducing Fears of Failure
I'm all for a UBI. Then I can quit my day job and "do whatever I want" instead. Including saving the world. Case in point just the other day I sat down and calculated, because my state legislature hasn't expanded medicaid, I still need to make "x" thousand dollars per year to qualify for obamacare subsidies. What does this mean? Because we have several children, it's a non trivial amount. The result? I will be keeping my day job, and working 8-5, instead of working part time and living off the dole. Come on, government, fund me! Don't hold back! I don't want to work! Who's with me? Raise the pitch forks and torches! :) (I wish I were kidding, but I really did do that calculating...)
rogerdpack··on Amazon’s “Two-Day Shipping” Is No Longer Two-Day Shipping
I heard a rumor if it took more than 2 days you could contact support and get a free month of prime or something??
rogerdpack··on Universal Basic Income Will Accelerate Innovation by Reducing Fears of Failure
Are there any numbers now showing ACA helped startups? Just wondering.
rogerdpack··on New Record Low Solar Price in Abu Dhabi – Costs Plunging Faster Than Expected
Natural gas comes from oil presumably?
rogerdpack··on New Record Low Solar Price in Abu Dhabi – Costs Plunging Faster Than Expected
I know they run large (presumably) copper lines from Utah to California to pump out electricity. That can't have been cheap, how bad can it be to pump it trans atlantic? LOL
rogerdpack··on New Record Low Solar Price in Abu Dhabi – Costs Plunging Faster Than Expected
Before getting too excited, realize this is for solar in Abu Dhabi, where umm...they get tons of sunlight as it were :) Though his other graph "predicts" that solar in more temperate climes will equal natural gas in "2020?" http://rameznaam.com/2015/08/10/how-cheap-can-solar-get-very...
rogerdpack··on It Costs $30 to Make a DIY EpiPen
My question is similar...is the US fitting most of the bill for R&D currently, since apparently we get ripped off for prescription drugs? (or are we getting ripped off? maybe it costs that much to develop the drugs dunno)
rogerdpack··on Dokany – User mode file system library for windows with FUSE Wrapper
Is this the same project that was like...dormant for years?
rogerdpack··on What goes wrong in the brain chemistry of a gambling addict?
No too many, and if I work on any on of them I get grumpy and addicted :|
rogerdpack··on All quiet in the IPv4 Internet?
Except will that happen? ... :)
rogerdpack··on What to Do When Your Colleague Creates Spaghetti Code
I was going to say the same thing, ex: with rails callbacks...it's hard to know exactly what is going to happen LOL.
rogerdpack··on What goes wrong in the brain chemistry of a gambling addict?
Unfortunately I'm the same way, side projects really addict me, and in a bad way. I'm quite happy while doing them (LOL) but then a few days afterward I'm a grumpy terrible human being while withdrawing. Any advice out there for me? :)
rogerdpack··on What goes wrong in the brain chemistry of a gambling addict?
I read a book once ("change anything") that was convinced that willpower practically "always loses" so you have to attack it differently, like modifying your environment/social environment/tools you know how to use, etc. Good read :)
rogerdpack··on What goes wrong in the brain chemistry of a gambling addict?
Though I suppose the population of bike thieves once was part of the "average citizenry"
rogerdpack··on The Age of Absurdity: Why Modern Life Makes It Hard to Be Happy (2010)
So...has your life been "happy/good" since reading these books? What's the end result? How has it changed? Cheers!
rogerdpack··on Technology was meant to herald a new way of working, but that’s not the case
Who do you work for that allows such flexibility, or is it more just contract gigs?
rogerdpack··on NPR Website to Get Rid of Comments
Seems like it was quite "better" than the alternative (basically anonymous user logins making comments) for my home towns recent transition to fb comments, for what it's worth...

The one place I've actually found awesome comments was "the economist" (well, HN isn't bad either), and the ny times is kind of OK. Everywhere else feels pretty iffy...

rogerdpack··on The Age of Absurdity: Why Modern Life Makes It Hard to Be Happy (2010)
Serving others tends to help out with my own happiness here. :) Since we're on the subject, other things that help: reading scriptures, meditation, relationships (others, family), etc.

And those typically don't cost much money LOL

rogerdpack··on The Age of Absurdity: Why Modern Life Makes It Hard to Be Happy (2010)
So would you say reading the book affected you more? How has your life changed since the first bout?
rogerdpack··on Startups in 13 Sentences (2009)
