roflchoppa··on Autonomous braking: 'The most significant development since the safety belt'
oh man my Datsun is a coffin compared to these things ha. lap belts are designed to cut you in half <:0
roflchoppa··on Tesla’s response to getting maps updates over LTE or service center WiFi
Just saved cached copies of the updates at the recharge centers. Ask if they wanna run an update then and there. Voila.
roflchoppa··on Who caused the Bay Area’s housing shortage?
Ah, I don’t mind the new housing developments, what does become frustrating is having to deal with all the traffic generated by the kids going to school in the morning. Are there alternatives to mandatory school buses, any research into this?
roflchoppa··on How the Reformulation of OxyContin Ignited the Heroin Epidemic [pdf]
interesting, this was around the time that my old colleagues started to dabble. Most got hooked into the hard stuff themselves.
roflchoppa··on Ask HN: How do you find mentors?
I think there is, have you spent time within the Freenode IRC server? There seems to be a little older of a generation of devs. In there, most are able to answer and give good feedback.

You solve the commute issue and get a little more in-depth of a knowledge base.

roflchoppa··on Ask HN: How do you find mentors?
Actually this was one of the questions that I had, currently the company that I work for offered a full time technical consulting role, but it seems more directed toward enterprise IT (office365). There are not many engineers that I have access to, hence limited room to learn.

Damn, thanks for that perspective. I realize that the learning potential is limited at this company.

roflchoppa··on Ask HN: How do you find mentors?
Well I’m located in the SFbayarea, there’s no shortcomings of developers, it’s just networking with others that I find a bit challenging. I don’t necessarily have an issue with the communication, but rather access to pick the brains of others.
roflchoppa··on What questions should I ask the engineering team I'm going to manage?
the best managers that I was working with always seeked to understand. Whether is was dealing with clients, or something technical were our hand was forced. There was also a level of trust that she had with us, were she gave us autonomy to build as we needed.

10/10 manager, would love to work with her again.

roflchoppa··on Ask HN: Weirdest hack that you ever saw in production?
dude that windows key always messed me up, esp because my computer was a load of crap, and it took hella days to minimize/maximize the window again, usually I had to reboot the machine.
roflchoppa··on Sierra Leone government denies the role of blockchain in its recent election

roflchoppa··on Show HN: Cryptocurrency portfolio app on Blockstack
its cool idea, but I like the idea of holding my own keys on my machine/paper opposed to delegating it to an app.
roflchoppa··on IOTA: A Tangled Mess
Wow. I was literally talking to someone in the CS department at school that had a large investment ($20k+) in this "coin". I heard about the transaction issues, did not know the coin had so many technical issues.

Be safe out there.

roflchoppa··on Parents now spend twice as much time with their children as 50 years ago
yeah I remember seeing those ads when I was a child as well, however I think that the invasiveness has increased. the children have this "relationship" with people on youtube, where the youtuber addresses the whole audience, but in a way that children might perceive as friendliness, while the intentions may not be so genuine.
roflchoppa··on Parents now spend twice as much time with their children as 50 years ago
Two of my buddies had kids when they were 19-20, when I see one of them his daughter is basically watching youtube videos all the time sitting on the couch.

The other guy does not really let his kids around phones or tablets, they can watch TV, but thats also heavily regulated. But usually when we are around, they hang out with us and work on cars. Its really fun to teach them stuff about cars even if they are only 5 and 6. When we sit and have meals, I try to engage them as much as possible, talk about music, and math.

But yes I agree with you, phones are really killing it. Have you tried deleting apps you like to use? Switch to web apps with difficult logins?

on a side note does anyone else find those youtube videos for kids hella creepy?

roflchoppa··on Bitcoin Blows Past $9,000
Funny, I was working on a research paper for this Ethics class talking about organized crime, and how they made movements into cybercrime (credit card, ID theft, etc). What popped up in my head last week was with the whole USDT/Tether Tokens, there has to be a good chunk of cash getting into these networks that is dirty. Cycling around in the various networks will get easier with Atomic Swaps / SEGWIT...

Far fetched idea is that these networks were designed for this type of washing. Clean and Dirty money enters in, someones bound to walk at some point.

> "The days of needing to do such things as manually type in IP addresses to connect to remote servers are coming rapidly to a close. Therefore, it is important for you to provide a seamless user experience for your gamers as they go on-line."

>> I miss the days of playing CS-1.5 and having to use gametiger.com to find servers to play in. Lots of pool_day and de_dats.

roflchoppa··on Ask HN: Is it too late to get into Bitcoin or cryptocurrency in general?
China has the advantage of cheap power, so where you pay $0.14kW/h they pay a fraction of that amount. You can mine crypto, but don't expect it to become profitable unless you have access to cheap power and are ready to break through some of the hardware costs......

Or if you have free student trials for things like AWS/AZURE and can just spin up an instance and run till the trail dies.

Or if you have nationalized power like Venezuela does.

roflchoppa··on Silicon Valley CEO Called Employees the N-Word and Hit Three Women, Suit Claims
I guess like in everything, lookout for the schemers, they always around.
roflchoppa··on Silicon Valley CEO Called Employees the N-Word and Hit Three Women, Suit Claims
If this crypto coin is all about just making payments to this add firm, whats the point of even having the coin? Seems like vaporware.

If his personal actions are this morally void, would management turn blind eye to wrong-doing by the company? Breach of client data, etc.

roflchoppa··on Why is it so hard to swat a fly?
Man you guys just approaching the problem the wrong way. I’ll tell you how Mike D, a technitian at Apple taught me. You simply wait for the fly to land, and then come at it from behind. The flys launch backwards when they take off, so you can open hand catch them, perform the stun, and get them out of the lab with all your open hardware.

I’ll never forget seeing Mike catch that fly.

roflchoppa··on Apple starts cutting the bloat from iTunes by removing iOS App Store
Damn, I liked the iOS feature to sync applications, back in the day when Apple was blocking Bitcoin applications it was the only way to get Coinbase back onto your phone.
roflchoppa··on iPhone X
I always thought that the leaks were deliberate to create media hype around the products.
roflchoppa··on Better management of discarded produce could help forests regrow
At my buddies old house in Saratoga Ca, the soil in the backyard was super dry. What we ended up doing is just composting all the greens out back; watermelon shells, cantaloupe, onions, really just anything non-meat. To agitate the process we just went out with a shovel and stabbed the section out to make the compost smaller. By the time he sold the place the soil was super healthy.
