rodrigosetti··on It's weird that most of “Hacker” news is dominated by business news
Because technology is basically business automation. Much less of coding is hobby or science.
rodrigosetti··on Multicomputation as a General Paradigm for Theoretical Science
So Wolfram has initiated two of the four scientific paradigms
rodrigosetti··on Netflix is not a tech company (2019)
Yup. Netflix doesn’t sell tech, it sells subscriptions to scripted drama. It uses tech to expedite its business, like everyone else.

Yes, they invent a little more technology than your typical small business spreadsheet. But tech is a commodity for them because the only strategy for tech is that “it has to be good”.

rodrigosetti··on The fungal mind: on the evidence for mushroom intelligence
You don't need a nervous system for information processing
rodrigosetti··on Senet
Yes, if our definition of "game" is broadened to mean "culture" around this tradition (as historians might), rather than just reducing to the rules.

In this sense, it also includes the conventions, skill-level titles, playing etiquette, etc.

rodrigosetti··on Chemical space is really big (2014)
Chemical simulation is very hard (involves solving multiple np-complete problems).

But that is one of the expected applications of quantum computers (simulate quantum systems).

rodrigosetti··on How can you not be romantic about programming? (2020)
This is someone that doesn't love our craft. It's ok.

Romance can be taken away from anything, as meaning isn't objective, but a human idealization. In the end, everything we do are just atoms moving around, and after a few thousands years nothing will matter.

rodrigosetti··on Trump fires Christopher Krebs of US cybersecurity agency
For Trump and similarly authoritarian leaders, specialists aren’t there to provide independent answers. They’re there to legitimize the political agenda of such leaders.

Trump doesn’t care about truth, evidently by his discredit of media, and promoting conspiracies to rise confusion.

I’m glad the Trump era is coming to and end, but these last days will last forever.

rodrigosetti··on What Is a 1x Engineer?
This is a list of good qualities regarding engineering practices, teamwork and emotional intelligence.

10x engineers, who are supposed to be 10x more impactful than 1x engineers, are expected to have many of attributes of that list to a higher degree even than 1x engineers.

This is a nice list, but smells a bit of resentment.

rodrigosetti··on Show HN: Dyna-Kinematics – A 2D physics simulator with some unique features
Diego, this is really amazing.

The one gif where you throw a block into a stack reminds of some interesting property of the laws of classical mechanics: they are reversible. That is, the high entropy state after the block hit the stack, if you reverse the momentum of all bodies, will eventually evolve to the low-entropy state consisting of the stack and the block - which would look very improbable (like an egg unbreaking), but possible, nevertheless.

But, because of numerical approximation in computer code, if you actually try to do it (reverse the momentum), you'll notice the simulation won't quite go back to the state it was before.

So, here's a challenge for you: can you come up with a simulation that is deterministically reversible?

rodrigosetti··on “10x engineers”: Stereotypes and research
It's a nice write up, but the methodology is based on productivity as measured against coding, debugging, and execution speeds - which does really capture how much more impact a good engineer can bring.

The reason is that the impact can't me measured because we can't foresee the inventiveness of a brilliant engineer - if we could foresee then we are that brilliant engineer and are inventing ourselves. For the same reason the act of predicting scientific research is impossible because that would be the very product of research.

There's no upper bound on what a brilliant engineers can do, I've known people that you could not replace with 1000 mediocre engineers working for 10 years and they would't produce the same innovation, creativity and automation.

rodrigosetti··on A World Run with Code
So he's comparing his eponymous programming language to the arrival of mathematical notation 400 or so years ago, and the advent of written language.
rodrigosetti··on Cryptographic coin flipping, now in Keybase
I like the UI, but I find the blog post example - flip a coin to see who will donate a kidney - a little distasteful.
rodrigosetti··on The next big blue collar job is coding (2017)

rodrigosetti··on Fortran is still a thing
I stopped reading when it implies software engineers are not real engineers.
rodrigosetti··on Plotter Drawings: Five seconds of Donkey Kong
it's a great conversation starter
rodrigosetti··on Being too intelligent might make you a less effective leader
Without looking at the study (so they might have taken this into consideration), but there might be a bias such that intelligent people rise to leadership position despite lacking leadership skills.
rodrigosetti··on An aspirin a day keeps many cancers away, study suggests
It’s not double blind. Aspirin takers might have other correlated behaviors which reduces cancer risks
rodrigosetti··on Finally a decent alternative to make?
Yes, it's a decent syntax sugar alternative for the kids. But it's not going to win if it doesn't solve the real problem: reproductive builds. A problem that CMake (and similars) are really trying to solve.
rodrigosetti··on Ask HN: Share Your Raspberry Pi Project
I built a smart scale that keeps track of my cat's food intake, compute trends, and text me when has been too long since eating:

https://github.com/rodrigosetti/smart-pet-food-tracker

rodrigosetti··on How to make a friend fast
I clicked thinking this was about making a friend go without eating
rodrigosetti··on Where in the world it is easiest to get rich (Ted talk)
In which society is it easiest to get rich? Contrary to common belief, it is not countries like the US or the UK that create the highest number of rich people per capita, but Nordic social democracies like Norway and Sweden. Counter intuitive as it may sound, high taxes, generous welfare states and strong unions makes a better environment for the people who wants to earn huge amounts of money, than free markets, low taxes, and minimal government intervention.
rodrigosetti··on Ask HN: I don't want to be a founder anymore
Try to find a motivation to get thru this - think about the good that you can make it to your employees as you lead them through the acquisition. This might help you to gain some more time to think about your options
rodrigosetti··on You don't have to be a passionate programmer
Agree with the post. But if you want to be amongst the best programmers, being passionate about your craft is a necessary condition.
rodrigosetti··on I hate almost all software (2011)
Yes, you hate technology because is hard to build it.
rodrigosetti··on Making the move from Scala to Go
Nice write-up. I wonder if you guys have tried using Scala as a functional programming (_no_ vars, returns, partial functions, exceptions, mutable data structures, etc.) - or just used it like in the stateful procedural world.
rodrigosetti··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (December 2016)
Yahoo is is hiring a full-time Software Engineer to work with Chatbots and Scala. The position is based in Sunnyvale, CA.

rodrigosetti··on Manifesto for Responsible Software Development
I will not sign the manifesto. I prefer to do whatever I want with software, thanks.
