roboror··on Apple Studio Display and Studio Display XDR
WOLED handles text much better than QDOLED, I don't think anyone would say the 27" 4k versions "suck"
roboror··on Apple Studio Display and Studio Display XDR
The Studio Display shares a panel with the MSI MPG 271KRAW16
roboror··on FBI couldn't get into WaPo reporter's iPhone because Lockdown Mode enabled
I've seen corruption in the police. Government. Hospitals. Do you support immediately shuttering those offices with no replacements?
roboror··on The next steps for Airbus' big bet on open rotor engines
Yeah I'd think you'd need some serious shielding to prevent a puncture
roboror··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
If it's truly down to 20:1 I think you need to start looking at what other variables in your life are keeping that number down and maybe have a conversation about it. Poor circle of friends match, poor scheduling, some personality flaw that you can work on etc.
roboror··on Nvidia Reportedly Ends GeForce RTX 5070 Ti Production, RTX 5060 Ti 16 GB Next
They already had worse margins so probably not unless they've been hoarding RAM. AMD also wants DC money.
roboror··on SendGrid isn’t emailing about ICE or BLM – it’s a phishing attack
Sub-addressing (doing tag+handle@domain.com) is supported by many email services but + may be flagged as an illegal character.
roboror··on How private equity is changing housing
>This is not true at all. Corporate loan rates are generally pretty damn high, only exceptionally can they borrow for low rates.

Are these companies going to banks and applying for a loan? I'd think they are privately backed and invested in.

roboror··on After the Bubble
I'd argue the crypto bubble did pop.

Bitcoin/crypto doesn't have earnings reports, but many crypto-adjacent companies have crashed down to earth. It would have been worse but regulation, or sometimes lack thereof, stopped them from going public so the bleeding was limited.

roboror··on Leaving Intel
Intel still sells a ton of silicon.
roboror··on H-1B Workers Now Required to Make Social Media Profiles Public
Other things happened since then too
roboror··on Netflix to Acquire Warner Bros
It's bad for everyone. Fewer buyers = less content made and lower budgets, fewer voices being heard.
roboror··on Netflix to Acquire Warner Bros
>Companies look at views and revenue to decide what content to actually make.

Social discourse is also heavily weighted

roboror··on The RAM shortage comes for us all
I mean it says on the page

>help ensure U.S. leadership in memory development and manufacturing, underpinning a national supply chain and R&D ecosystem.

It's more political than supply based

roboror··on Leak confirms OpenAI is preparing ads on ChatGPT for public roll out
I agree but even if AGI is possible within 5-10 years it must be hard to justify maintaining or even increasing this level of burn for much longer.
roboror··on Neural audio codecs: how to get audio into LLMs
Sure but that needs to be licensed
roboror··on Nvidia has produced the first Blackwell wafer on US soil
This is the culmination of years of work, not months, as the article suggests. I prefer the actual press release.
roboror··on Ireland is making basic income for artists program permanent
>Precisely, people on the left wildly overestimate the admin overhead

Public or private? I've never seen "the left" criticize admin overhead in public services.

McKinsey estimates healthcare profit pools will reach $819 billion in 2027.

roboror··on The best YouTube downloaders, and how Google silenced the press
Yeah organizations don't use YouTube for file access, that's just not a good way to operate a video department in a business. Also the quality is terrible and adding another set of reencodes will make it even worse.
roboror··on Nvidia buys $5B in Intel
>One mostly built CPU's, while another- GPUs.

I mean that also applies to Intel and Nvidia. Intel does make GPUs but their market impact is basically zero.

roboror··on YouTube addresses lower view counts which seem to be caused by ad blockers
Click campaigns/conversions and user codes are more important than pure impressions.
roboror··on YouTube views are down (don't panic)
It's at least partially in YouTube's interest to lower view counts:

• YT right now can't compete with direct creator sponsorships, which is a huge potential revenue source they want to tap.

• This also makes YT Premium less appealing since there are still ads, though these are "skippable" in a sense.

roboror··on A computer upgrade shut down BART
But if single-occupancy vehicles don't cover the costs of the infrastructure they use, the ridership moving from public to private may incur even higher costs.
roboror··on Intel's "Clearwater Forest" Xeon 7 E-Core CPU Will Be a Beast
It's was fine like a month after the first e-core chips launched, certainly handled better than AMDs split ccd vcache which still needs to be pinned.
roboror··on Margin debt surges to record high
Because unless you are very lucky you simply will not be able to retire, or at worst just run out of money with no healthcare or shelter.

If everyone you know stressing about money would actually be fine if they stopped stressing they are all very privileged. That's not reality for most people. This is not a silly game, and it's frankly ridiculous for your advice to be "find plot of land, build a house."

roboror··on Turning an iPad Pro into the Ultimate Classic Macintosh (2021)
It's extra steps but you can enable JIT with stikdebug on the app store
roboror··on Intel Foundry demonstrates first Arm-based chip on 18a node
Yep, that's exactly what they did with TSMC. Foundries don't just build massive production lines and hope someone will use them, even TSMC.
roboror··on Turning an iPad Pro into the Ultimate Classic Macintosh (2021)
Emulation is now allowed on the app store
roboror··on Learning basic electronics by building fireflies
Like $2 if you're patient
roboror··on Intel Puts the Process Horse Back in Front of the Foundry Cart
Did Intel indicate their readiness to go fabless in their latest filings?

>“We are focused on the continued development of Intel 14A, the next generation node beyond Intel 18A and Intel 18A-P, and on securing a significant external customer for such node. However, if we are unable to secure a significant external customer and meet important customer milestones for Intel 14A, we face the prospect that it will not be economical to develop and manufacture Intel 14A and successor leading-edge nodes on a go-forward basis. In such event, we may pause or discontinue our pursuit of Intel 14A and successor nodes and various of our manufacturing expansion projects. While we continue to evaluate Intel 14A for use in future Intel products and our plan includes an initial product designed to utilize Intel 14A, at present we are maintaining the option to design future Intel products requiring nodes with performance beyond Intel 18A and Intel 18A-P to be produced internally or by an external foundry. If we were to discontinue development of Intel 14A and successor nodes, we expect that a majority of our products would continue to be manufactured in our own facilities utilizing our nodes up to Intel 18A-P through at least 2030.”
