robjan··on Twitter Problems?
They've recently launched a Clubhouse clone and monetisation features
robjan··on Tell HN: You can see your vouched and flagged items
Eventually you get shadowbanned from flagging. I also fat finger and my flags aren't counted anymore.
robjan··on Ask HN: Does the world need a “passport equality” movement?
Are we talking about travel or right to work? The latter tends to be beneficial to both countries as it prevents brain drain without the country having to impose exit bans / quotas.
robjan··on Poll: Where do you live?
Should have at least listed the Special Administrative Regions of China, Hong Kong and Macau which have their own passports and currencies. I'm not going to vote for China since I am not allowed to enter 95% of it without a visa.
robjan··on Spotify deletes 70 Joe Rogan episodes
If you see something you feel goes against the community guidelines simply flag it rather than adding oil to the fire and publicly reporting it.
robjan··on In second largest DeFi hack, Blockchain Bridge loses $320M Ether
The office address in that link is just a virtual office.
robjan··on Singapore prime minister Lee Hsien Loong’s Sudoku solver (2018)
I would say it's less important for our leaders to be at the coalface and coding / learning to code than for them to know what's possible.

During the last industrial revolution, the leaders who we all hear about weren't directly involved in building the machines which automated processes. Rather, they were experts at leveraging skills of people who could do it.

robjan··on MariaDB to go public at $672M valuation
I'd say that ignoring the whales, PHP and MySQL (especially WordPress) are the opposite of the long tail.
robjan··on If it were my home
I don't think it's specifically targeting anyone, it's just oversimplifying issues. e.g. a place may look really good on average salary but terrible in terms of GINI (inequality). Neither should be taken in isolation
robjan··on Ask HN: At a peak of my dev career, I hate my life
Lax visa requirements
robjan··on Lessons from Seoul's controversial privatized subway line
MTR Corporation is 75% owned by the Hong Kong government and receives subsidies in the form of land leases granted below market value and a monopoly on rail infrastructure. I really appreciate the MTR, and am also a part of the 25%, but it's not really a truly private company.
robjan··on Adding unusable RAM for tax reasons
Infamous is probably the correct word, its infamy just hasn't been translated.
robjan··on Free Postgres databases for small projects
Better than other abuse prone services, such as Hetzner or OVH, which require you to take a selfie holding your national ID card.
robjan··on €2.6M spent for a book at auction, believed they would own the IP
The language and behaviour is consistent with the cant generally spoken by the crypto community. It's a similar idea to /r/wsb/ and does the job of identifying insiders while keeping outsiders out.
robjan··on It’s not still the early days of blockchain
Who appoints the notaries?
robjan··on Switching to an N95 mask gives a 75x boost in Covid protection
GP is probably referring to KF94, the Korean standard. Their form factor is somewhere between a surgical mask or an industrial / medical N95. They are quite popular, here in HK, with people who want to protect their makeup.

Example: https://www.amazon.com/KF94-Protective-Individually-Packaged...

robjan··on _Application.Run(Object, Object, Object, Object, Object, Object, Object, Object
It's not specific to one Chinese Language or even just Chinese.
robjan··on Show HN: BookStack – An open source wiki platform and alternative to Confluence
It's easier if you create some value added service like "premium support" or an Active Directory integration plugin then charge for that.
robjan··on Crypto: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Amazon stock represents ownership of a company and gold has both utility and intric beauty. They are demonstrably valuable
robjan··on Mozilla's call for cryptocurrency donations angers founder
The mentioned examples don't have reasonable alternatives in many scenarios.
robjan··on Inviting another GitHub user to be your successor
Forking a repo is highly disruptive to the community and any users of the software, especially if the original repo is just abandoned with no notice
robjan··on Boeing 777 departing Dubai nearly had a major incident after takeoff
The pilots haven't been identified so we don't know about their cultural background
robjan··on Microsoft Exchange stops passing mail due to bug on 1/1/22
You also have to run a datacentre or server room with the on-prem version
robjan··on The Importance of Price Signals
It's easy to pick stocks in a bull market
robjan··on Tell HN: AWS appears to be down again
That's the theory but in practice very few companies bother because it's expensive, complicated and most workloads or customers can tolerate less than 100% uptime.
robjan··on Hunting Tech Debt via Org Charts
Tech debt is a thing for any non-trivial product. The more tech debt, the slower it is to create working increments of a product and the more risky changes are.

I have experienced products of which the development has ground to a halt due to the system having such complex interconnections that every change required everyone in every meeting to assess the impact of a change. The root cause was constantly churning out MVPs with no thought of architecture and no overall management of the product or teams. I was the architect hired to clean up the mess.

robjan··on Ask HN: Have you accepted the TOS that give FB access to your WhatsApp data?
That is your assumption
robjan··on Ask HN: Have you accepted the TOS that give FB access to your WhatsApp data?
I accepted it because it's more convenient than dismissing the popup every time I want to send someone a message.
robjan··on Opt Out of Cynicism
There are still choices between finding ways to work within the system and making the best of the situation or completely giving up and resigning to the fact that nothing will ever get better.
robjan··on Opt Out of Cynicism
There is a very real difference between constructive criticism and simply complaining. In most cases, complaining and shutting people down without suggesting any possible alternative or improvement just makes the situation even less unpleasant for everyone.
