robjan··on Django 4.0
I've used ElephantSQL before. As long as you write efficient queries (especially avoiding N+1) and choose the right data centre it's usually reasonable for a small project.
robjan··on Apple broke up with me
I don't think it's laziness, it's just delegation of a time consuming process. In a similar vein, most of us no longer wash clothes using a washboard, grow our own food etc. Modern society is pretty much built around us not doing everything for ourselves and, as a result, we generally have a better quality of life.
robjan··on Web3 is not Decentralisation – it’s a Ploy to put Crypto Bros in Charge
The risk is that if the price of STORJ crashes or even sharply corrects, many nodes could come down resulting in data loss.
robjan··on Walmart pulls children's toy that swears and sings in Polish about doing cocaine
If anyone really wants it, it's available on AliExpress for around 5-7 USD including shipping to pretty much anywhere in the world

robjan··on Vercel raises $150M Series D
If the USD is hyperinflating then pretty much every other currency is also hyperinflating too. Check the other major currencies like Euro, GBP and JPY. The US Dollar is actually strengthening against these currencies and these countries don't have enourmous USD reserves.
robjan··on Tech journalism is less diverse than tech (2020)
There's no desire to commodities finance work, but there is for tech
robjan··on Amazon to stop accepting UK Visa credit cards
It did. In this case the EU interchange restriction of 0.3% has been revoked
robjan··on Amazon to stop accepting UK Visa credit cards
The cost of handling cash is similar to handling a credit card transaction
robjan··on Direct file transfer via browser with no server involvement
I don't think Mark Zuckerberg has broken E2E encryption yet. But yes, there is some metadata.
robjan··on Moon’s top layer has enough oxygen to sustain 8B people for 100k years
Earth still needs the carbon, just preferably not so much in the air.
robjan··on NFT misconception: JPEG aren't stored on the Blockchain
You can't copy and enjoy my property for free, you can copy and enjoy an NFT for free.

If you were to get the new Land Registry enforced you would have to change the law, in which case the blockchain is no longer needed since the idea and enforcement of ownership is centralised with the government.

robjan··on Would you pay more for a noisy computer?
Can't you go to a computer store for a similar experience?
robjan··on Kazakhstan to restrict crypto miners amid power shortages
No, because everyone pays higher electricity bills while a small number of people benefit from selling their mined crypto.
robjan··on Ask HN: How to start learning about investments?
This is not good advice because WSB and superstonks generally advocate making highly speculative trades which are highly likely to result in losses.

I would recommend Bogleheads[0], especially the wiki. It's not sexy but that's the point, they advocate getting rich slowly by investing in a few diversified funds and then forgetting about it.

robjan··on U.S. house prices are rising exponentially faster than income
The properties themselves lose value over time but the title or lease to the land under the property still increases in value exponentially.
robjan··on Remote-first work is taking over the rich world – research hints at why
Anecdata, I know, but I've yet to find a solution as good as a whiteboard for brainstorming ideas / events / architecture collaboratively.
robjan··on $8000 of SHIB coin is worth $5.7b (in 400 days)
Trades in a market are not zero-sum since the buyer still has something that can be sold for a non-zero amount
robjan··on $8000 of SHIB coin is worth $5.7b (in 400 days)
A normal trade is not zero-sum
robjan··on Ask HN: Senior Devs, what career have you moved on to avoid impeding doom?
Gluing things together has been what the majority of software developers do pretty much since the industry started. There are millions of us, it's impossible for everyone to be building something completely new. And outsourcing to poorer companies is nothing new - the offshore consulting companies make up significant proportions of their respective country's GDPs and have done for a long time.

My only advice is to try to become "T shaped" (I hate the term but it makes sense), a generalist with a few currently marketable specialisms.

robjan··on WhatsApp scaled to 1B users with only 50 engineers
It was a one off payment on iOS but a poorly enforced annual subscription on Android
robjan··on Delete Your Facebook App
The accelerometer is used for displaying 3D and panorama images. Of course, there could be other usecases.
robjan··on What does Google think minimum wage is?
If you don't like it, just don't upvote or engage with the thread. That's how moderation works on HN.
robjan··on Hetzner Apple Mac Mini Offering
They asked for me to send a selfie holding my Hong Kong Identity Card but no other bureaucracy.
robjan··on Most comments that people post on my videos disappear [video]
It's very British slang which is why many people are probably not understanding
robjan··on Most comments that people post on my videos disappear [video]
It had multiple meanings, one of which is quite offensive.
robjan··on Who Has Been Speaking?
In my experience, lack of meeting facilitation skills is widespread and one of the things that leads to these kinds of inefficient meetings where people are able to derail them from whatever the objective was.

It's a very valuable soft skill which can really help people raise their profile, especially in larger organisations.

robjan··on Tesla officially launches its insurance using ‘real-time driving behavior’
Those are exceptional cases. It's pretty easy to see when someone is frequently slamming on the brakes vs. occasional being forced to due to external factors.
robjan··on Multiple vulnerabilities in WP Fastest Cache plugin
It's "good enough", in my experience, and works on nginx and Apache with minimal configuration.

Some plugins break it and the object cache leaves a lot to be desired but for a basic wordpress you can pretty much activate it and forget it.

robjan··on Tesla officially launches its insurance using ‘real-time driving behavior’
So people should be priced based on the things outside their control rather than those they can control?
robjan··on Tesla officially launches its insurance using ‘real-time driving behavior’
You can't (fully) control your health but you can control your driving style
