robjan··on Show HN: Meet.hn – Meet the Hacker News community in your city
I can get it to work by using a district name e.g "Wan Chai, China". There should probably be some special handling for Hong Kong and Macau since although they are in China, they have their own ISO country codes, flags and are divided differently.
robjan··on Companies need junior devs
In every company I have worked at, Staff is ranked higher than Senior. Junior roles are usually titled "Associate Engineer" to avoid the term "Junior"
robjan··on Companies need junior devs
I find seniors more stable and juniors more jumpy to be honest.
robjan··on Have ‘hobby’ apps become the new social networks?
Doesn't meetup.com somewhat fulfil this, although it's most useful to people living in big cities
robjan··on Have ‘hobby’ apps become the new social networks?
Language courses generally have a clear end date so it's not surprising that many people wouldn't be super invested in making or maintaining new relationships in them.
robjan··on Arrest of Pavel Durov, Telegram CEO, charges of terrorism, fraud, child porn
Their focus is on UX more than security. The app is super snappy and supports group chats with hundreds of thousands of participants.
robjan··on Just disconnect the internet
It's not necessarily air-gapped. There are many ways to accidentally or deliberately patch the intranet and internet together.
robjan··on Oh man! Our entire team has been replaced by Vietnam developers.
Nobody said whether that was a problem or not but obviously if you use a vendor and they provide an unstable team, the team is less valuable.
robjan··on Oh man! Our entire team has been replaced by Vietnam developers.
Salaries in India shot up during COVID. It was a massive pain since the already revolving door service companies started revolving even faster as they struggled to retain talent. I'm not sure what the market is like now though since we too use Vietnam based developers.
robjan··on No one expects young men to do anything and they respond by doing nothing (2022)
The US isn't the only country in the world
robjan··on How Olympics officials try to catch “motor doping”
You can either enhance the athlete or the equipment, it just so happens that cycling involves more complex equipment attached to the athlete than most sports. I imagine this is even more of a concern in the Paralympics where various prosthetics, mobility equipment and other assistive technologies could give certain athletes unfair advantages.

Depends on the jurisdiction but they are often within their rights to call the loan especially if it goes into negative equity.
robjan··on Ryanair wins screen scraping case against Booking.com in US court ruling
Booking.com is a travel agent and they do have agreements with most airlines using GDS such as Amadeus or Sabre. It's a symbiotic relationship.
robjan··on Initial details about why CrowdStrike's CSAgent.sys crashed
I think a lot of people use Hetzner. I notice slowness, especially with media, in Hong Kong. A workaround I've found is to use VPNs which seem to utilise networks with better peering with local ISPs
robjan··on Technical Details on Today's Outage
You are probably not the target market of this product then. The real product CrowdStrike Falcon sells is regulatory compliance and it's a defacto requirement in many regulated industries including banking.

By the way, Falcon can be and is deployed to Linux and MacOS hosts in these organisations too it's just that this particular incident only affected Windows.

robjan··on Goldman Sachs: AI Is overhyped, expensive, and unreliable
You're talking like AI is a religion
robjan··on ICANN's list of abandoned vanity TLDs
Probably. Our security team insists that we purchase ourname.[everything]. Not a stretch to imagine that the risk / cyber teams of those large organisations were thinking along the same lines.
robjan··on Show HN: I am building an open-source Confluence and Notion alternative
This would be a great feature. We have a similar problem whereby there are official versions of documents which have been through a review process and the only way to work on the next version on Confluence is to have a separate working copy of the page which pollutes the search and gets messy very quickly.
robjan··on Chat Control Must Be Stopped – Now
Signal uses post-quantum encryption
robjan··on Chat Control Must Be Stopped – Now
When you have democracy the democratic process is now available to undermine it.
robjan··on If English was written like Chinese (1999)
People from Hong Kong tend to use Cangjie or the number pad when entering Chinese characters. Pinyin is only really used on the mainland.
robjan··on Engineering for Slow Internet
I'd say these days it's more common to deploy in ap-southeast-1 (Singapore) rather than Japan to cover most of APAC.

robjan··on Boeing 737 crashes during take-off in Senegal
The laws are more laws of economics. Airlines like to be relatively vertically integrated, especially at their home bases.
robjan··on StackOverflow is banning accounts that delete answers in protest against OpenAI
If you open source your work you can't just pull the content then sue someone using the content you gave them a license to use due to moral rights.
robjan··on 'Underwater bicycle' propels swimmers forward at superhuman speed
From the looks of the scuba diving video, it looks worse. There's way more leg movement and it looks less controlled (and more likely to damage corals/kick up sand from the bottom) than slow finning.
robjan··on Big data reveals true climate impact of worldwide air travel
There is no way a 4km flight for 10 euro is profitable. Which operators are doing this?
robjan··on He Lost $36B in a Week. Now Bill Hwang Is Fighting to Avoid Prison
Not noticed slow loading myself. Still snappy as always
robjan··on You receive a call on your phone. The caller says they're from your bank
I don't think this applies to calling back someone who just called you. Also people who have premium banking tend to use the same relationship manager every time without this suspicion.
