robarr··on Science of Fasting
Adding a data point:

Recent article on the New York Times about this study:

https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2114833

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/04/20/health/time-restricted-di...

The study refers only to restriction in search of weight loss.

Edited to remove one word that may have been perceived as sarcastic.

robarr··on Spacedrive – A File Explorer from the Future
Safari on ios too. I assume it is a bug because it would be a very counterproductive feature to use when presenting a project. As others have said: good idea, but with no release the risk of forgetting about it is high. I have starred many github projects but only gone back to see progress on few of them.

“Verkhoyansk holds the record for both the hottest and the coldest temperatures ever recorded north of the Arctic Circle, with 37.8 °C (100.0 °F) and −67.8 °C (−90.0 °F) respectively”

robarr··on Foone's account was suspended due to copyright infringement
Foone is kind of a retrohacker.

http://floppy.foone.org/w/Main_Page.

Full of arcane knowledge, insatatiable curiosity and a weird sense of humor.

And by the way i read somewhere that ending on hacker news front page is not of his/her/they? liking.

robarr··on Covid Resilience Ranking:The Best and Worst Places to Be as Winter Meets Omicron
In the eyes of Bloomberg the return to the good old times ‘before it all went to hell’ is the only measure of success : “ November’s No.1, the UAE has basically normalized back to pre-pandemic life: Property sales are at a decade high in its largest city of Dubai, restaurants are full, and the Expo—which is running until March—has attracted two million visitors since it started in October.”

But as much as i agree on the false equivalence of flight travel and success story, one the main characteristics of the pre-pandemic world was not only global circulation of goods but also global circulation of people. Students, scientific community members and professionals starting to travel again is, i hope, a good measure of a healing world.

robarr··on Neo-Andean Architecture in The Highest City in the World
Your story may be apocryphal. I live in Peru and the unfinished aspect is rather the result of the extended period (we are talking years) it takes poor families to build their houses and also from the fact that the vertical growth of the house reflects the growth of the family: the children as they become adults build and live on the second floor, the grandchildren on the third etc. These houses are always getting upgrades as the families grow and round up money and therefore are never finished. You can always see the metal rods sticking out of the cement columns because they always plan to add another floor. (Housing in Peru is mostly built on cement and bricks, except the poorest people, because of earthquakes).

robarr··on Popular ROM and Emulation Site Pleasuredome Shuts Down After 17 Years
Rom sites are going the way of dinosaurs while nostalgia 8-bit retro machines are offered at 700 euros. Meanwhile cheap chinense portable emulators are 10 dollars on Amazon and archive.org keep some of this jewels online until the next dmca notice.

This is very confusing.

Rip pleasuredome, should have used my free tickets !

robarr··on Ask HN: Does anyone have a system for preventing tribal knowledge?
Another classic stolen and then changed original people’s value. What represented the knowledge of ALL the tribe now means the knowledge of only a few.

In any case this is what the OP refers to:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tribal_knowledge

Tribal knowledge is jargon terminology used to describe information that is known within a group of people but unknown outside of it. A tribe, in this sense, is a group of people that share such a common knowledge. From a corporate perspective, Tribal Knowledge or know-how is the collective wisdom of the organization. It is the sum of all the knowledge and capabilities of all the people"

robarr··on Sir Clive Sinclair has died
The is a kind of ridiculous expression “you never forget your first one”. Well mine was a ZX81. I will never forget her.

Thanks sir Clive!

robarr··on Corporate America would never allow a ‘healthy food mandate’
As much as most the reporting done on RT.com is probably honest and truthful, there is an undeniable anti-American sentiment to be read between the lines. Just keep clicking on articles and you will sense it. By the way I am not an US citizen nor I subscribe to most of American international policies, democrat or republican, and I suppose this is the way the game is played. Journalism is (and maybe always was) just another weapon.
robarr··on Sad, lonely people more likely to be ‘natural’ social psychologists (2018)
Whatever ‘human nature’ is, cultural and social layers make any answers rarely applicable to anything other than a relatively small universe of people, not universal truths.

“Do people work harder in groups or as individuals?” For example can be answered in one way or the other depending on social values, cultural traditions, and those even change thru time.

Ask your parents, ask younger generations, ask other ethnics groups or even ask yourself the same question in twenty years.

robarr··on Don't Understand with William Shatner
“Are you concerned about lending legitimacy to what many consider a propaganda network?

Is it a propaganda network? I don’t know. Is it any more than the BBC or the CBC or the French network or the Japanese network? I don’t know. I’m not the spokesman for RT America. They are who they are. I’m doing an innocuous show about inquiry into arcane pieces of knowledge.”

robarr··on Google Voice has stopped forwarding SMS
The spam note :

“Important: In light of spam causing potential issues with SMS forwarding, text message forwarding to linked numbers will stop on or after August 1."

Only appears in the English version of the notes. I have not tested if it still works on non US Google accounts. Is there still something like US vs non US Google accounts?

robarr··on Why is China smashing its tech industry?
It seems to be a global trend in countries where there is not proper legislation or heavy lobbying . In my country this has been happening the last four of five years and now the national football cup is now called the betsson cup and all along the matches the commentators refers to the odds and how easy it is to bet using only the app. There is a bet to make on much more than who wins and who looses: spread, number of fouls and types of plays per player and per team, and so on. There was even the chance to bet on the latest presidential election.
robarr··on Amouranth Is Twitch's Smartest Troll, but She's on Thin Ice
Is it pornography? is it art? a performance? Just money changing hands?

I understand why some or a lot of people would watch but I don’t quite get what it is they are watching, or even if they know themselves. For a moment she put a stethoscope on her heart , nothing visually erotic and she started to stream her heartbeat. I am kind of perplexed. Any thoughts ?

robarr··on I'm a Frito-Lay Factory Worker. I Work 12-Hour Days, 7 Days a Week
People with poor formal qualifications or habilities not longer marketable have little choice except double shifts to raise a family. Just imagine being 40 years old, no college or technical education, having only retail work experience.

robarr··on Alien Dreams: An Emerging Art Scene

robarr··on The Double Exploitation of Deepfake Porn
It is hard to think of this as a ‘tech’ problem when it is rooted in the objectification of women and sexuality in general. There may be a back and forth of tech fixes and tech exploits but it will remain a societal issue.
robarr··on I Was Robbed in San Francisco While the Cameras Rolled
Some Maps and statistics to confirm or refute one’s perception about San Francisco:

https://www.neighborhoodscout.com/ca/san-francisco/crime

https://www.sanfranciscopolice.org/stay-safe/crime-data/crim...

https://www.crimemapping.com/map/ca/sanfrancisco

I should add that I am not a US citizen nor I live in the US. I live in a 10 million inhabitants south American capital, where Tv reports on crimes of all sorts committed every day. I, however, have not been robbed in the last twenty five years. Sometimes personal experiences do not reflect geography and statistics.

Edit: comment line.
