roamerz··on TikTok Deal Is the Shittiest Possible Outcome, Making Everything Worse
Isn’t that crazy? Absolutely not a good look and an insult to the institution of the office of the Presidency.
roamerz··on TikTok Deal Is the Shittiest Possible Outcome, Making Everything Worse
>> biggest asshole ever elected to office

I do agree and more was just trying to moderate my comments.

roamerz··on TikTok Deal Is the Shittiest Possible Outcome, Making Everything Worse
That’s cool. We obviously don’t agree philosophically and any refutation you could possibly provide would be just like mine - with respect, an opinion.
roamerz··on TikTok Deal Is the Shittiest Possible Outcome, Making Everything Worse
>>good idea

Or maybe just the less of 2 evils. An intelligent asshat or non asshat that was an imbecile. It was time for a change.

There are so many things I don’t like about him but some of his policies such as immigration / border enforcement, natural resource utilization, federal workforce reduction, regulatory reduction and tariffs are absolutely legit imho and will take time to have an affect.

roamerz··on Americans no longer see four-year college degrees as worth the cost
>> but knowing the basics about economics, literature, science, art, math, history is valuable if you want to think critically about the world.

Sure if that is relevant to what your goals in life are. I chose to get an education that was tightly coupled with the outcome I wanted.

roamerz··on Flock's gunshot detection microphones will start listening for human voices
That’s a good point. I can tell you from firsthand experience that the abundance of cameras in our society absolutely have a profound effect on the ability of law enforcement to solve individual crimes. To the point you are making how do we transfer those successes into reducing the level of crime?

My thoughts on that are probably not very popular on here and those are to just build larger jails and equip those with drug rehabilitation options. The larger jails allow us to not just kick the people back on the streets immediately but compel steps that help eliminate recidivism. Another source of criminal behavior is mental illness. I have no clues on how to fix that except perhaps concentrate on the causes.

All these cameras and recording devices exist for that same reason Advil exists in that it helps a toothache. Doesn’t really solve the problem but fights the symptoms.

roamerz··on Apple takes down ICE tracking apps after pressure from DOJ
>>Avoiding being where ICE agents are is not against the law. Sure if you are the one avoiding arrest. How about if you rob a bank and I help you evade arrest? You could make a case that these apps are doing something similar. With a good prosecutor I wouldn't want to take my chances defending myself against that.

>>Crossing the border not at a designated point of crossing is against the law; this app is not for that. True - but to argue the point - it could be used for that. If you had a map of where ICE/Border Patrol was it might aid in a successful crossing. Probably a bit OT though.

roamerz··on Apple takes down ICE tracking apps after pressure from DOJ
I think it’s more about liability that specifically breaking a law. I’m not a lawyer but Apple is knowingly publishing an app that is openly helping people evade and/or break the law AND is putting Law Enforcement in danger. Seems there is some liability there.
roamerz··on Man still alive six months after pig kidney transplant
>> poor value for money across a variety of sectors

Yup this. I went in for a cardiac stress test a few months ago. Less than 30 minutes in a room with a treadmill, an ekg machine and a low-mid level technician. $10k.

roamerz··on Launch HN: Flywheel (YC S25) – Waymo for Excavators
>>I think swinging should not be manual.

I disagree and here's a couple of reasons why I say that:

1. What am I going to do with the time between releasing control and regaining it from the autonomous control?

2. In that break of workflow my first thought is it will cause a break in my concentration.

3. When I am swinging back from the truck to the trench the bucket is naturally in my control. It seems that in autonomy mode the transition from autonomous to my control would be very unnatural and choppy. I suppose with time it would be okay but man seems to violate the whole smooth is fast concept.

I'll shoot you an email.

roamerz··on Launch HN: Flywheel (YC S25) – Waymo for Excavators
Well sure if you are just looking at where the bucket is digging but there is often a dump truck sitting on either your right or left flank waiting for what’s in your bucket (don’t forget the beep button lol). Having a monitor to either side duplicates what you are seeing out of your peripheral vision when operating the real thing. Would make transitioning from real to virtual much easier and imho safer.

Yes that is precisely why - makes for a much more versatile machine. TB180FR - it’s med-small, about 10 ton.

roamerz··on Launch HN: Flywheel (YC S25) – Waymo for Excavators
I have a 20 ton Takeuchi and I don’t recall any feedback in the controls at all. The feedback I use is from the seat and sounds of the machine - well besides of course visual of course.

I cannot imagine this being useful to me unless the virtual operators cab closely mimicked an actual machine. It would have to have audio from the machine and be on a platform that tilted relative to the real thing. It would also need 270 degrees of monitors with a virtual mirror to see behind. On the front monitor, minimally, would need the to see vertically up and down too.

I also imagine all of this would be more useful to seasoned operators who can do most things on excavators in their sleep (definitely not me lol)

roamerz··on Federal judge lifts administration halt of offshore wind farm in New England
While 150 Billion isn’t going to solve our deficit issue it will help. By comparison that is almost 3 times the total $$ of military assistance we have provided to Ukraine since the invasion began.
roamerz··on Show HN: Sping – An HTTP/TCP latency tool that's easy on the eye
Thank you looks super helpful!
roamerz··on Oakland cops gave ICE license plate data; SFPD also illegally shared with feds
>>What is the mechanism for enforcing laws passed by legislature?

Probably the same as it is at the federal level - voting out of office. During the Biden/Harris term there was a complete dereliction of duty when it came to border enforcement. Actually it was worse than that - they helped people illegally cross the border, even flew them in on the taxpayer dime. This is why we have President Trump today.

roamerz··on Impacts of adding PV solar system to internal combustion engine vehicles
There is going to be a parasitic drag loss to figure into it as well. I think the only way to accurately calculate that would be in a wind tunnel or maybe an amp meter with a before and after installation under identical conditions.
roamerz··on The Effect of Noise on Sleep
That’s all great until something happens while you are sleeping that needs your attention. I’d love to be able to use something like that but being responsible for my family’s safety says I cannot.

Maybe there is room for a device that recognizes those types of sounds and maybe triggers a watch vibration would be a solution.

roamerz··on Judge Rules Apple Executive Lied Under Oath, Makes Criminal Contempt Referral
Requires, no but in all regards it’s a great deal for app developers. You write code they do everything else. You want options? They exist (Windows/Android) but are all shitified minefields of commercial ads and poor design choices that I only use when required. Is Apple perfect? No far from it. When I buy and use their products though I feel more like the customer than the product. It’s a tool built for me not their advertisers.
roamerz··on ICE Deports 3 U.S. Citizen Children Held Incommunicado Prior to the Deportation
There have been many laws passed by Congress addressing immigration. It is against law to cross the border without authorization. This particular case exists as a result of not enforcing those laws. Pretty simple.
roamerz··on Apple restricts Pebble from being awesome with iPhones
100% agree with those statements. It would be nice to have a more robust API and this more options but unless forced to I don’t see Apple doing that and honestly rightly so.
roamerz··on Apple restricts Pebble from being awesome with iPhones
With as much functionality as there is on an Apple Watch I can see how that would be huge endeavor to accomplish while maintaining the tight security and privacy model.
roamerz··on FBI, EPA, and Treasury told Citibank to freeze funds to claw back climate money
>>The constitution requires that the president "take care that the laws be faithfully executed".

You mean like Biden enforcing our border laws?

roamerz··on US Forest Service and National Park Service to fire thousands of workers
It’s crazy how divided we are on the issues. In the last 4 years the needle went so far left, way past what even traditional Democrats wanted. Now it’s heading to the right faster than a Falcon 9 rocket. The people in the center are probably just frustrated. The far left are visibly enraged and the far right are celebrating at every EO. Crazy times.
roamerz··on Suspension of inbound parcels from China and Hong Kong
You're right it's definitely a matter of degree. And I would have to say early 2000 when Clinton signed the trade agreement with them. That is when our manufacturing capacity started moving to China and with that our security. It's of course way more complex than that but..
roamerz··on Suspension of inbound parcels from China and Hong Kong
>>The idea that China is a major security threat is basically brand new

You're kidding right?

roamerz··on FTC orders 'gun detection' tech maker Evolv to stop overstating effectiveness
Yeah that was horrible and a bad day for everyone. I was referring to instances where LE does their job correctly.
roamerz··on FTC orders 'gun detection' tech maker Evolv to stop overstating effectiveness
Yup agree 100% with the first statement.

I do not agree with the second at all. Law Enforcement are both obligated and expected to put their own life at risk protecting the public. That said they are also expected to show up for work tomorrow! It’s a sad day when they don’t.

roamerz··on FTC Orders 'Gun Detection' Tech Maker Evolv to Stop Overstating Effectiveness
(C) crazed gunman neutralized by good guy with gun. In this case it was 3 minutes after the fact (Median Police Response Time to Active Shooter Attacks) rather than immediately as there were no available Good Guys with Guns due to gun policies.

I would never ever choose to be involved in an active shooter situation but if I were I’d surely want to be armed rather than not.

roamerz··on MarkItDown: Python tool for converting files and office documents to Markdown
Since it’s Microsoft maybe it will do a half decent job on Outlook HTML and .docx. I have evaluated most of them out there, paid included and haven’t found one that I thought was good enough to run in production. Definitely will be giving this a try.
