ro_bit··on LastPass Android app has got 7 trackers in it
I feel like these trackers (Firebase Analytics and Visual Studio Crash Reporting) need to be looked at in context of the data they actually send and who they report to. According to the thread

> In the Mobile apps, Firebase Cloud Messaging (often mistaken for a tracker) is used only for push notifications related to sync and performs absolutely no tracking functions. Microsoft Visual Studio App Center is used for crash reporting on a range of mobile devices. In the Web Vault, Stripe and PayPal scripts are used for payment processing only on payment pages.

Compare this to LastPass where it was feeding data to Google Analytics and MixPanel, which do much more invasive levels of analysis in general.

I would find the entire situation even more comical if the 16k guy turned out to be a cryptominer
ro_bit··on Student Surveillance Vendor Proctorio Files SLAPP Lawsuit to Silence a Critic
Most of Berkeley's own classes don't follow the official guidelines or best practices. I just took a high-stakes test today that was curved, closed note/book/everything, and required live proctoring over zoom with hands in view at all times. And that isn't cherry picking, because all of my classes this semester with assessments have similarly invasive policies. I am thankful, however, that the pushback on proctoring software has been strong enough that the university doesn't use it. Most faculty (4/5 of mine. I dropped the 5th person's class) will also accept students with technical incapabilities or objections to being recorded live, probably because they understand that if a student escalates privacy concerns, the department will side with them thanks to the university's "official" stance on proctoring.
ro_bit··on Running Tide attracts VC names with plan to bury gigatons of CO2 on ocean floor
That makes me curious - Does anyone know if there's a way to contain the damage done to our oceans into a certain region? Being able to designate a part of the ocean as an ecological deadzone by somehow directing all our dumping/carbon capture into there would leave the rest of the ocean less affected. All the trash in the ocean gets moved by the current into specific regions of the ocean, so I wonder if we can do that with the rest of our impact.
ro_bit··on Reading Candidates’ GitHub Profiles
This feels like a lot of noise. If we can't use our github profiles to show code that isn't meant for production, and we're applying to junior roles for people with less experience (and presumably few, if any, examples of production-ready code), what's left to publish? Should I unlink my github from my resume because it might detract from it?
ro_bit··on California bill would decriminalize psychedelics
I personally thought, upon reading the headline, that it was talking about some poll of californians
ro_bit··on I don't know, Timmy, being God is a big responsibility (2007)
That makes sense. Anyone not living close to the "asymptote" of universe generations can't prove that they're in a simulation, but they can't prove they aren't either. Maybe each of those universes keeps trying to simulate an infinite number of slightly varied universes in the hopes of simulating their progenitors, making an infinite amount of uncertainty and suffering in their attempts.
ro_bit··on I don't know, Timmy, being God is a big responsibility (2007)
Now I'm curious how the behavior of the people in the "first" universe, unencumbered by the idea of how affecting the machine's reality would affect their own reality, is different from the behavior of the people we see.
ro_bit··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (February 2021)
Hi Nkharrl! I'm an undergraduate student who is deeply interesting in roles involving cybersecurity and making an impact in cybercrime. I would love to gain insight into how trust platforms work for online applications, as well as tools security engineers use in their day to day. Does SpecTrust offer any summer internships?

ro_bit··on Facebook buying ads for Messenger to be top result when you search for 'Signal'
When Signal says your data belongs in your hands, they are referencing the end to end encryption in the app, which means that any of your data that goes through their servers is encrypted and can't be read by them. This can be verified by people partaking in a Signal message through the use of their safety numbers and through building the app from their published source that you can verify only ever sends your encrypted data to Signal servers. It's true that we can never be sure what's in Signal's backend but we can also prove that anything we send to their backend can't be read by them regardless of its design.

Not dang but probably

ro_bit··on Ask HN: Please share your experience teaching your kids to program
> We plan to do some more complicated robots and also make our own fun mods for Minecraft (as soon as I figure out how to hook up Scratch to recent version of it).

You can't quite hook up Scratch itself to Minecraft (not that I know of, at least), but if you want to use Minecraft as a backbone for this kind of education, you might be interested in Pneumaticcraft, which includes little programmable drones that are programmed using a simple mockup of scratch (https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/pneumaticcraft-...) or ComputerCraft, which tries to emulate shell scripting and lua in particular (https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/cc-tweaked). In the future, if you wanted to teach him Java, you could have him develop mods himself through the Spigot, Forge, or Fabric modding APIs.

Wouldn't make sense. The blog post indicates they went through legal channels to make this happen
ro_bit··on Microsoft job posting suggests a major user interface update expected in 2021
Another workaround for this if you forget and accidentally connect to the internet during setup is to write incorrect login credentials at the MS account login step. If you do it a few (less than 3?) times the option comes up to make a local account instead.
