rmk··on Software engineering salaries come from one of three budgets
Well there's "should" and actual reality. The article lays out the latter, pointing out that it's career suicide to go into bucket #3. If you are not an 'up or out' type of person, then maybe it's worth considering spending time in bucket #3.

Of course, software is obsolete the moment it's written, so it could be argued that a lot of people who think they are in #2 are probably in #3 much of the time, spending a small sliver in #2. However, budgets are allocated once a year or maybe a couple more times, so if you are in something that's categorized as #2 when that exercise occurs, you are still in a better place.

rmk··on JAL A359 at Tokyo collided with Coast Guard DH8C on runway and burst into flames
Line up and wait (meaning, on the runway, prior to actual takeoff clearance) is very common during busy periods. This is in America.
rmk··on A Lufthansa A350's frustrating Oakland diversion
Airline pilots can lose their jobs if they do not follow the airline's SOP (Standard Operating Procedure). SFO controllers have gotten a shitty rep, with good reason, it appears. This wouldn't have happened at any of the other many busy airports in the US. This seemed to be the majority opinion on a couple other forums where this has been discussed.
rmk··on Ask HN: Books you read in 2023 and recommend for 2024?
Are there any Smil books that are suitable for children?
rmk··on Ask HN: Books you read in 2023 and recommend for 2024?
This is a phenomenal book. Fascinating information for the layperson (and young children also) about the immune system!
rmk··on Ask HN: Books you read in 2023 and recommend for 2024?
A few books I read this year (or perhaps late last year), and wholeheartedly recommend:

- Typee: A peep at Polynesian Life by Herman Melville

- Fatu-Hiva, Back to Nature by Thor Heyerdahl

- The lost world: being an account of the recent amazing adventures of Professor E. Challenger, Lord John Roxton, Professor Summerlee and Mr Ed. Malone of the 'Daily Gazette'

rmk··on Henry Kissinger Has Died
Just curious. Was Kissinger a smoker? And was he an Ashkenazi Jew? Because he'd have risk factors from smoking, and would also be likely to have some known genetic predisposition to certain illnesses.
rmk··on FTC Chair Lina Khan looks for allies and leads in Silicon Valley charm offensive
Ooh... I suppose the same charm that drove away most of the career antitrust officials will now be turned toward SV? The time to beg political benefactors has arrived, now that 2024 is hovering close by, hence this visit.

I suppose it's a great technique: turn the screws, file lawsuit after lawsuit and fail to win, and then turn around and ask for donations (the implied outcome is that the lawsuits will stop)?

rmk··on Sam Bankman-Fried Convicted
About reading statements maligning oneself, you are right that a presumed innocent person doesn’t have to do this. But SBF waived that right when he agreed to testify. This is why it’s considered a bad idea to take the witness stand when you are the accused…
rmk··on Sam Bankman-Fried Convicted
That’s reflected in sentencing guidelines. The more serious the crime the higher the sentence. Expecting to walk away from a crime of such magnitude is just not realistic.

Sometimes, it’s important to make an example out of criminals, so that future criminals are deterred. Thus, strict punishments are a social necessity.

EDIT: A lot of folks think financial crimes are pretty much victimless crimes, and thus financial criminals deserve leniency. However, just because we can’t see the harm doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. SBF has probably reduced hundreds of not thousands to penury. Those people will pay the price for his wrongdoing, possibly for the rest of their lives.

rmk··on H-1B Visa Program Changes Aimed at Stopping Applicants from Gaming Lottery
Many doctors in rural areas are H1Bs. They do not make 500k per year. It would be a genuine loss to us if we couldn’t attract and keep them because of changes to the system. It must be noted that many hospital systems are nonprofit and likely not subject to H1 caps though. It would be nice to hear from a doctor on this topic.
rmk··on Do I need a reality check in tech (career)?
You need to examine your expectations. Many junior people think they are entitled to raises and promotions, irrespective of market conditions. Making resources and guides sounds like a good thing to do, but unless it is a clear win for the company (read: moves the needle on sales, or is clearly making a difference in the productivity of people who bring in money, like sales), why would one be promoted or given raises in a poor market?

Calling Python a meme language has to be one of the more hilarious things I have read on HN!
rmk··on India’s pickle people: Decades-old culinary heirlooms, nostalgia
Here's one that will make you long-lasting pickle. It involves an initial set of steps, a 6-7 day wait, and then another set of steps followed by another 6-7 day wait until you can eat them.

You can get the specific types of dried red chillies from most Indian stores.

Here's an 'instant pickle' recipe, in english:

rmk··on India’s pickle people: Decades-old culinary heirlooms, nostalgia
You could buy a pickle spice mix (this one is a North Indian style pickle mix, by the looks of it):

https://foodsofnations.com/products/indian-pickle-masala-ach...

Here's a 'wet kind' to make Gujarati style pickles:

Here's a recipe to make mango pickle (this being the tail end of summer, you may chance upon raw mangoes still): https://www.tarladalal.com/spicy-mango-pickle-mango-pickle-w...

Or try pickling lemons, which are easily available year-round:

rmk··on India’s pickle people: Decades-old culinary heirlooms, nostalgia
There are also the 'sweet' pickles, murabba: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murabba

Don't know what they would be called in the west. I see 'preserves' often, but they seem to be closer relatives of jams than murabbas. Unlike jams, murabbas have a savory taste (much smaller than the overall sweet taste) element to them.

rmk··on The elderly are becoming homeless at a rate not seen since the Great Depression
> Anyone who buys a house wants to use it as a nest egg. Its not just a baby boomer thing.

This is a recent phenomenon, and it is not universal at all. The boomers are the first generation not to protect pensions but instead gut them, and also to simultaneously use their houses as ATMs which HELOCs and such, which exploded in the boomers' heyday, the mid-late 80s. Almost every large institution and measure that supports the rampant inflation of house prices and keeps their values afloat came into its own with the explicit encouragement and effort of the boomers.

rmk··on The elderly are becoming homeless at a rate not seen since the Great Depression
America is not Singapore. We have higher expectations around the amount of space than pretty much the whole rest of the world. And that's okay: we are also the world's wealthiest country.

I agree though, that the current housing crisis is entirely the work of people who own influencing city governments much much more than renters (who have no choice but to move out of expensive locales).

rmk··on The elderly are becoming homeless at a rate not seen since the Great Depression
Didn't Boise, ID have an influx of better-off people from the coasts during the Pandemic? If plenty of luxury housing is being built it was likely in response to that. Ultimately those houses will get rented or otherwise occupied, which should free up housing at the lower end.

Compare this to places in the Bay Area, where it's not practical to spread out any farther (no good public transport because of a dozen or more transit agencies that are always fighting and Caltrain, which is a hugely dysfunctional organization that can't even run trains at a piddling frequency). We have houses being blocked using CEQA and other nonsense, all because people who work in unproductive industries or not at all (non-tech, retirees) have decided to get more than their share by denying permits for new construction.

What's better? Some housing being built or none at all?

rmk··on The elderly are becoming homeless at a rate not seen since the Great Depression
Ah, so all the boomers who want to use their houses as nest eggs and have driven up prices making housing unaffordable for future generations have also wrecked the prospects of those less fortunate in their own generation. What's more unconscionable is the fact that young people are not forming families, not that some boomers are facing the consequences of their actions. It would be nice if all boomers faced the music, but that ain't gonna happen.
rmk··on America Can’t Stop China’s Rise
What if the goal of these restrictions is to impoverish China? America competed with the Soviets and they spent ruinously, including in their war in Afghanistan, ultimately leading to their downfall.

By some estimates China has been overstating GDP growth and massively understating their military expenditure as a percentage of GDP. This means that for the past decade China may already have spent more than they can afford on a nonproductive area of the economy. One could rightly say that America is also spending like drunken sailors on defense, but the difference is that America issues the world’s reserve currency and can easily monetize its deficit, a luxury that few countries, including China, have.

rmk··on Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine (12/1946)
Ellery Queen is the pseudonym of a writing pair, Frederic Dannay and Manfred Lee. They have written many great detective short stories and novels, in addition to publishing this magazine. The magazine is still extant.
rmk··on The way that Jensen Huang runs Nvidia: 40 direct reports, no 1:1s
The idea is that Professional Development should be sought elsewhere, not from the CEO. That's not the same as 'no one needs professional development'.

If you do not do Professional Development, and make this clear to your hires whom you expect to be pretty good at their job functions already, I do not see how it should be treated as cultivating yes-men. 'I don't do Professional Development' is also not the same as 'I can't take feedback or let someone call a spade a spade'.

rmk··on Flexport is rescinding a bunch of signed offer letters
Illegal maybe depending on your jurisdiction but it’s something that happens more often than you think.

I am not here to convince you to give notice, but only stating the reasons people do give a courtesy notice. As always there are people who don’t see the need to observe certain courtesies, but they are the exception not the norm.

rmk··on The reason why men marry some women and not others
This is a very well-written article with a lot of things that ring true. Have you read the entire book?
rmk··on Flexport is rescinding a bunch of signed offer letters
It’s rarely about companies, and often about people. That manager you pissed off by not giving any notice may talk trash about you in backchannel reference checks; or maybe you want to keep the relationship going to leave the door open for future employment opportunities; the industry is small and many people bump into one another more than once in their careers.
rmk··on Pope Francis Calls US Catholic Church 'Reactionary'
Wow. None of the namby-pamby stuff that one has come to expect from political leaders. The Pope doesn't mince words here!
rmk··on Tell HN: I-9 Debacle Nationwide
It's a consequence of illegal immigration, and people encouraging it. Physically presenting ID may be a countermeasure against fraud, so perhaps that's why they are bringing it back?
rmk··on Why Does Coffee Make You Poop?
Doesn’t explain why it’s a morning phenomenon for the most part. I imagine most people aren’t hightailing it to the toilet once they drink a cup of coffee no matter the time of the day.
