rmholt··on Show HN: File-based cache for slow Python functions
I have extensively used https://pypi.org/project/diskcache/. Is there a reason you decided to make an in house solution?
rmholt··on "PayPal took $80k from me and banned me"
Not critiquing you but the approach - that's abysmal UX. If PayPal blocks your account with no feedback, that's incredibly anxiety inducing.

And in an environment like finance, good communication of the status of the account should be the difference between an "oh okay that's fair" and a lawsuit for theft.

rmholt··on Cousins are disappearing. Is this reshaping the experience of childhood?
Even if it was true, put this way, the argument is insanely hostile to women, basically saying "Your freedom means we, as a society, are declining".
rmholt··on Bug Hunt #1
Hey HN!

I want to create a series of posts about me debugging stuff. For my future reference and for blogging purposes too. I was wondering what ya'll think!

rmholt··on Push notifications – What to push, what not to push, and how often
Nothing. Everything. Never. /article

In all seriousness, I recommend the app FilterBox, it allows you to set fine grained rules for notifications for each app

rmholt··on Things are about to get worse for generative AI
That is true and would break the prediction... here's hoping!
rmholt··on Things are about to get worse for generative AI
Yes, but to enforce those decisions in other cases there would still have to be other lawsuits. And I just don't see that happening on a large enough scale to change the industry

Maybe I'm wrong though

I feel like the outcome is obvious, there will be a finite list of IPs who's owners have enough money to actually sue, which will get filtered out of the output of publicly available models. They will just slap a detector model on the end of the generator to filter them out.

Private models will not care, nor will things change for IP owners with lesser power.

rmholt··on Rep and Ren: A new approach to CLI find, replace, and renaming
The website breaks for a phone interface, the code lines are neither scrollable nor break lines:/
rmholt··on Tell HN: Please don't print –-help to stderr in your CLI tools
My two cents, do not do that. Git invoking PAGER is tripping me up every time. For example, if I want to cross reference terminal output and --help and the PAGER hides the entire terminal output
rmholt··on Ask HN: I am overflowing with ideas but never finish anything
My current approach is document ideas first, group similar ideas and execute them at the same time. For example, throughout the years I've had four or fives ideas for games, I'm writing all of them down in Google keep, thinking of interface, mechanics, etc. This way when I feel productive I can push multiple projects at the same time, (all using the same stack). I can have a doc trail for when I want to come back for a project.
rmholt··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
I understand, it's basically a wrapper around PiHole, which is a DNS server. This wrapper does several things, such as monitor dns log, change site destination, and monitors my devices and enforces itself as DNS server (thorough SSH)

Project is here https://github.com/richard-hajek/environment-overseer/tree/b... the code quality is not amazing but it works haha

rmholt··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
I struggled with procrastination a lot so on top of Pi-Hole I built myself an automatic procrastination tracker and blocker, this setup helped reduce my procrastination from several hours a day to almost nothing (over the period of several years of slowly unlearning the bad habits)
