rmb177··on Review of the First Three Johns Hopkins Coursera Data Science Courses
I completed the first two courses in the first four-week block and am currently taking the third course. Mr. Heaton's review provides a really good summary of what to expect.

Overall, I'm also happy with the course. I was expecting a little more degree of difficulty and a little higher workload than what I've run into so far. If you're an experienced developer with a Github account, the first course can be completed in a couple of hours. The R Programming course was more along the lines of what I was expecting. So far, the third class is closer to the first than the second (in terms of difficulty...does require a bit more time).

Going into the course, I wasn't expecting to come out a "data scientist" ready to land a full-time job in the field. My experience so far confirms that expectation. But it's a fun course, a good way to get started in R, and a good way to spring-board your exploration into the field. It's nice to have deadlines as a motivation to keep on track and stay on a track for learning. I'm hoping by the end of the curriculum I feel confident enough to try and land some small free-lance projects.

I'm paying for the "official" certification. I'm not sure if it's really worth it, but at $50/class it's not putting a big dent in my finances.

rmb177··on Don't look for a UX guy, be a UX guy
After seeing yesterday's Show HN post on Habit List, http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3998894, this post really hits home. I have a similar app in the store and their UI/UX is just at a higher level than mine. It's so much easier to focus on the implementation details and not give the UI/UX the attention it deserves. Especially when you're much more confident in your programming knowledge than your design knowledge.

Very nice! I have a similar app for the iPhone and your UX/UI is much nicer and more intuitive.
rmb177··on I have Crohn's, an incurable digestive disease, and built Crohnology
I just signed up and am really looking forward to checking it out. Thanks for creating the site!

I was diagnosed with Crohn's in 1998 when I was a junior in college. I had surgery about 8 years ago and my life has been great ever since. I went from pretty serious flare-ups every 3-4 months, to one relatively minor flare-up since the surgery. I find that stress is a pretty large trigger so I try to be aware of when I need to take a step back and relax. Since the surgery, I've been able to eat pretty much whatever I want, but have been recently experimenting with a Paleo diet for both Crohn's and general health benefits.

rmb177··on 10000 things all CS students should do before graduating
I agree, and count me as one of those who needs to learn sys admin tasks (though I can move files and directories around :) ). I developed a side project last year and used Google App Engine precisely because I've never setup my own web server. In the short-term I think it was the right decision as I had a tight deadline to get the app running. In the long-term I'm not so sure since I'm now locked into GAE.

So 0001 is definitely on my someday TODO list.

rmb177··on Netflix's Fascinating Cancellation Questionnaire
I found the author's criticism of the Netflix Instant catalog surprising. I would be set for weeks if I watched my instant queue straight through. Granted, I'm not overly discerning when throwing something in there, but Roger Ebert recommends Netflix instant movies on his Twitter feed faster than I can watch them.
