I guess rarity is hard to set a price on. And people like being rare and unique.
1. Even though I haven't used it in a while it is super simple to get in to. 2. They did not pay me to learn new stuff. They did not need a fancy web framework. They don't care about code elegance. 3. They already had a web site hosted on server with PHP. 4. Development environment is easy to setup locally (just download a portable PHP dev env and run). Everything is built in. 5. Passing it on to them, it's just a few text files to upload that they can easily modify as needed. Nothing to compile.
In short, it's just the simplest way to do it sometimes (KISS). And not all projects are big enough to justify more complex solutions.
Edit: I see the title of this post is changed now
My problem with this is that when I encounter something that I think I already know I tend to skim it, making it hard to pick up additional knowledge that I might have missed.
I guess, if you are ok with leaving an electronic trail whereever you go...
Interestingly, if you talk about cash in Sweden the comments you will get tend to be very hostile. It's like talking about meat in a vegan community.
That is what I miss the most about the old web. We wanted to build something better by sharing knowledge. And for a while we did. Then mainstream came and corporates took over.
