Who are the beggars? The quants who take but don't give back?

For JavaScript folks, there's Turfjs from Mapbox.

Rasterio ftw! Way easier to use than gdal's Python bindings.

Fun fact: Geopandas uses Fiona and shapely under the hood.

Would it be possible to use a bar chart instead. Pie charts are kind of a pain.
rkda··on Is it unethical for me to not tell my employer I've automated my job?
Do you live in the US? Because where I'm from, our public libraries suck and not everyone has access to the internet. I agree that people with access to public libraries and the internet have no excuse. What I'm telling you is that a large number of people in other places of the world don't have access to even that.
rkda··on Is it unethical for me to not tell my employer I've automated my job?
It's not that. It's that not everyone who desires to be an engineer/surgeon/attorney has the resources or opportunities to do so. Some people are barely surviving as it is. Intellectual pursuits are a luxury for them.

rkda··on Slack Said to Draw Interest from Amazon
Chat services usually have an import service. At least for their more famous competitors. Doesn't Slack allow you to export your message history?
rkda··on Bonobo – A data processing toolkit for Python 3.5+
Oh... now it makes more sense. Didn't mean to sound harsh. Thanks for sharing your framework! :)
rkda··on Bonobo – A data processing toolkit for Python 3.5+
All those references to monkeys hurt my head. Bonobos are not monkeys. If they wanted to name it after monkeys, they should've called it Capuchin or something.
rkda··on Upspin – Another option for file sharing
Awesome! Mac only for now though :(

rkda··on How Hash Algorithms Work (2007)
>The word 'cat' will hash to something that no other word hashes too, but it will always hash to the same thing.

Don't hashing functions have collisions?

rkda··on OpenStreetMap plugin for Unreal Engine 4
The problem with elevations from GPS chips are that they are ellipsoidal heights, that is the height from the surface of the ellipsoid used to model the earth. This can be very far from the elevation referred from mean sea level. I think SRTM is still the best way to get elevation data as mentioned by other commenters.

rkda··on A Surveillance Master Dissects a Murder from the Sky [video]
"HawkEye II is intended to see expansive areas wtih resolutions that allow users to detect movements of people and vehicles. It does not provide the ability to detect gender, ethnicity, age, hair color, nor can it be used for facial recognition. This is an inherent limit to Wide Area Motion Imagery. If cameras get better - and they will - the same rseolution limits will remain in place, the change will be in the size of the coverage area."

At least the company behind this seems to be ethical.

rkda··on Ask HN: Should I unplug my laptop charger at 100%?
From experience, it's a separate app but manufacturer specific. Haven't had much luck looking for a generic app.
rkda··on Ask HN: Should I unplug my laptop charger at 100%?
I'm using a Lenovo now and they still have it. Old Samsung also had something similar, Battery Life Extender, which won't stops charging at 80% even when plugged.
