rjayatilleka··on D3.compose – compose reusable charts and components with D3.js
That's a very fair judgement, but it's also something the d3 team knows about. D3 4.0 is breaking d3 into a bunch of reusable components. The exact use case you mentioned, getting the path/layout data so React or anoth DOM manipulation library can be used, is supported by d3-shape, which just can out recently. Tree diagrams are still in progress, but various curves and pie charts are already implemented.

rjayatilleka··on A look inside Facebook's source code
I'm not surprised they don't have a gist/pastebin like app. When I interned at Amazon this summer, they were just developing one, and it was still pretty alpha (persistence was buggy and lost me an entire design review of notes). Facebook is younger, so it seems fair that they don't have one.
rjayatilleka··on Uber backtracks after jacking up prices during Sydney hostage crisis
That snippet would make sense if it was automated. But the front half of Uber's tweet was directly about the situation -meaning they acknowledged terrorists were in the area and then jacked up prices. That's terrible PR. Much better to say the price surge was automatic, and only have no tweet or an automated tweet

I haven't read the law itself, but I assume it only applies to news publishing. Simply banning the right to give your content out for free would be extremely broad and overly stupid for any government to do legally.
rjayatilleka··on Advanced programming languages (2009)
Bluntly put, Haskell's graphics support sucks. There are different libraries with different levels of support, but none are complete or high level. There are also Haskell like alternatives like Elm and PureScript, but they're experimental. And finally there are some Haskell to JavaScript compilers, but I'm not sure what DOM manipulation is like with them (and they're all experimental).

I'm building a Haskell desktop app over winter break (DMX and light show controls), but after a fair bit of research, I came to the conclusion that its best to do the GUI in JavaScript and speak with a Haskell server over a WebSocket.

rjayatilleka··on Spanish News Publishers’ Association Asks Gov to Help Stop Google News Closure
Yeah, I understand that AEDE (representing Spanish news companies) lobbied for the law, and now changed its mind to lobby against it. Regarding solution 1, yeah that's another good point. It's not a good idea to make one corporation an exception to a law.
rjayatilleka··on Spanish News Publishers’ Association Asks Gov to Help Stop Google News Closure
Yup, exactly. The only reason it didn't happen in Spain right away is the "inalienable right" clause, so that publisher's couldn't sign away the right to be paid. If that goes away, it'll be the same situation as Germany.
rjayatilleka··on Spanish News Publishers’ Association Asks Gov to Help Stop Google News Closure
Jeez. So do they have any proposed solution beyond "government intervention"? It's a fact that Google isn't going to pay to host Spanish news, nor can the government force them to do that. So either they need to

1. amend the law saying that Google is an exception, OR

2. amend the law to make payment for news snippets no longer an "inalienable right", OR

3. repeal the law.

Which in the end brings back the exact situation that was there before the law.

EDIT: Just realized that number 1 doesn't count. I don't think you can make an inalienable right and an exception to that right at the same time.

rjayatilleka··on Elm 0.14 – Simpler Core, Better Tools
It's possible, but it's really just a name change. And the `Either` monad is used almost entirely for error handling anyway, so Result is a name that many Haskell/Elm users could come up with on their own.
rjayatilleka··on Apple and IBM Deliver First Wave of IBM MobileFirst for iOS Apps
I suspect Apple and IBM's software and hardware businesses have different margins. Another comment said that IBM still does some software work, but has basically exited 'low margin hardware' business.

Whereas Apple's software is nearly all free (and used to supplement hardware sales) while their hardware is extremely expensive for consumers and has huge margins.

rjayatilleka··on Transcriptic for YC biotech startups
Just to let people know, Transcriptic isn't the first startup in this market. Emerald Cloud Lab is another, and I'm sure there are others.
rjayatilleka··on Blood on the Corn: Tale of Murdered DEA Agent Enrique Camerena
I finally finished reading parts 2 and 3 of this just now. Honestly, this story is horrifying. I'm not sure if I want to read Webb's article or not. But what I think is important to take from this is two key points:

1. That various parts of the US government have a seriously problematic disregard of the Constitution. And not just in terms of the information gathering that's always on the headlines today, but in much more visceral and violent terms as well.

2. Mexico's recent history is horribly intertwined with drugs, and remains so to this today. I'm no expert on this, so I don't know if the corruption has gotten better or worse since the events of Operation Leyenda. But it's still there. Reform is absolutely necessary there (but I don't know how to approach it, or if the US government should make actions there).
