riter··on Are we racing toward AI catastrophe?
i'm going to have to agree here.

today's MSM pundit-oriented journalism has been a carry-over from legacy yellow journalism pioneered by Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer.

yet we've somehow managed through institutions. it will centralize and decentralize as the dollars ebb and flow from NYT to Twitter to Substack and in the short-term we will converge into a fragmented information digest.

in the long-term i predict we will leverage those same technologies + cryptography for sense-making in an adversarial information environment.

i think the future will look more like balaji's ledger of record + yuval harari's defensive AI.

riter··on Hydralisk.py – nation-state scale Web3 wallet orchestration via CLI
Ever wanted to spin up a million wallets on Ethereum or Polygon? Or maybe you want to schedule a transaction to be sent out every 5 minutes for a year? Or maybe you want an army of wallets to trigger a smart contract function with a single command? Hydralisk is a simple proof-of-concept wrapper around eth-cli written in python.
riter··on Twig.py – a Twitter Web3 influencer truffle pig used for finding engaged users
twig.py is a tool that helps web3 marketers find very engaged users within a commmunity's twitter profile.

Engagement is primarily based on likers, commenters and retweeters of a target account's tweets.

In web3 communities are everything. Even if your product is great, token utility phenomenal, a project's community is highly dependent on community and stewards of said community.

Twig's purpose is to help you surface engaged users or "influencers" so they can be incentivized to help bootstrap and grow your web3 community. Twig can also be used for competitive analysis and research for understand what type of engagement posts are most effective.

Trusting these types of extensions are a gamble nowadays imho. Every month Chrome or infosec researchers are constantly unearthing bad actors that have built but more likely acquired large user base extensions to either inject ads, false ad attribution, or recording user behavioral data for bot fraud heuristics.

I don't disagree thought ... as most aren't privacy conscious

Major personal use cases:

- SS during conf demo calls

- SS competitor products (UI designers, game and product designers to convey flow / features)

- SS images that don't allow download on sites (memes, fb, insta)

- SS chats to convey conversation (TG, Whatsapp, etc.)

Feedback w/o trying app:

- Would be great if it could classify app / tag app names if it recognizes the client as I may not remember the content initially but would remember whether it was chrome or whats app

- Would be great to classify and extract conversations

- Would be great to group same app SS within same time period (last hr) into the same folder

- Support video screen cap though I do this less

- Save the URL of SS if in browser

- JPEG compression

Its funny because this is an activity most people in the information work space do almost certainly weekly and there has been no innovation on this. You have plenty of room to 10x the user experience here and make a must-have app. Good luck and pls share v2 on HN!

riter··on Electric or Not, Big SUVs Are Inherently Selfish
Over the years I've observed they excel at certain topics (China coverage, High Society) but so many end up being myopic op-ed pieces. Can't win them all.
riter··on Electric or Not, Big SUVs Are Inherently Selfish
Have you driven around Idaho, Nebraska or Montana?

"The electrification of the Hummer is not a signal of climate progress. It is a declaration that it’s still OK to be an asshole."

As said by whom? Metropolitan coastal journalists?

Spends half the article critiquing SUV culture and people.

Try having a large family where you consistently get meters of snow every winter and your municipality never got the benefits of modern urban planning.

It bothers me that it appears despite making progress in a decades old climate narrative, nothing is ever enough so long as it doesn't fit one's own narrative of one's own world.

The news is actually positive! Critiquing is fine but don't attack a culture you don't fully understand or have empathy for.

I've lived in nothing but metropolitan dense cities and am pro-environment but also have empathy because I have friends and family who don't live like me and sacrifice without the niceties I'm able to afford with my lifestyle.

Kudos on the progress to Hummer TBH.

riter··on Ask HN: What tech stack would you choose for building your next app?
For quick proof of concepts

Backend: Flask -> MySQL -> Docker -> Digital Ocean

Frontend: Vanilla JS + Bootstrap or VueJS + Template

Have yet to fail me. It makes for easy transition once things get serious and I want to migrate over to GCP/AWS

riter··on Andrew Yang’s math on the robot takeover doesn’t check out
An important meta observation, I agree.

I would add to that a corporate shareholder governance model that takes all the externalities into account like labor and environment instead of primarily profit and public perception.

While we're at it, update our model for GDP to include softer concepts like mental and physical well being / education / etc.

If your metric is money, you become money.

riter··on Andrew Yang’s math on the robot takeover doesn’t check out
What super micro chip story?
riter··on Andrew Yang’s math on the robot takeover doesn’t check out
Agreed. Though there is something to be said for skilled and unskilled labor.

Where the advent of the automobile brought about a labor market for machine operators (taxi drivers, combine driver, etc.), what happens when the machines automate themselves.

Or the bar to acquire the technical skills of an operator (ML engineer) is so high and move too fast coupled with institutions reacting far too slow to adopt policy aiding the unemployed in high skill acquisition.

riter··on Andrew Yang’s math on the robot takeover doesn’t check out
This article does seem a bit intellectually dishonest. Its sleight of hand to point out countries that have more robots than we do, do so with "no ill effects". There are secondary and tertiary reasons why more automation in SK or DE does less damage to the blue collar Korean or German than the American for reasons like corporate culture, social welfare, etc.

Our issues have everything to do with boardroom and executive policy and profit maximalism.

What bodes well for South Korea and Germany are their social and corporate welfare systems which are a completely different cultural makeup than ours.

Also, manufacturing as a whole HAS improved throughput over the decades, just with less humans:

https://www.vox.com/new-money/2016/10/10/12933426/27-charts-...

The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis' chart seems at odds with the chart from the Bureau of Labor and Statistics.

I'd like to see more journalism with less cherry picking and more delivery of a whole picture.

good on ya ;)
riter··on SoftBank Is Selling Wag Stake Back to Company
Reality may not be too far a departure from fiction. Great writeup by Professor Galloway on how this could have been a CIA job in the form of a Homeland treatment I found really fun to read:

riter··on Informer: A bot library that allows masquerading as real users on Telegram
TBH what I find most humorous is no one mentioning the obscure 90s reference :)
riter··on Informer: A bot library that allows masquerading as real users on Telegram
Hahaha.. yes, if you can't tell this was a boiler plate for tracking and analyzing the activity of the wonderful seedy world of crypto.
riter··on Informer: A bot library that allows masquerading as real users on Telegram
I simply was not aware of Pyrogram, thank you for sharing that and pointing it out.

And yes, I admit the headline is a bit charged and its implementation does not reflect it as much as I would like.

It does not change the fact that I researched an implementation of Telethon for a use case I needed, and I didn't find it so I made it and shared it.

My involvement in ads and marketing had nothing to do with that. It's less nefarious, it just sounded cooler and was an innocent mistake in retrospect.

As mentioned above, I appreciate the mod(s) for taking the time and energy to edit the title so it reflected the implementation. This is my first shared project on HN and I am excited to finally participate and see the feedback/energy.

Thank you guys/gals!

riter··on Informer: A bot library that allows masquerading as real users on Telegram
That is actually an awesome and "ethical" use case for this project. Thank you for sharing who this journalist is and sharing ideas on ethical application.
riter··on Informer: A bot library that allows masquerading as real users on Telegram
Sweet! This point of this project was I found no boilerplate for one of the listed use cases so I just built it in 2 days and later shared it. I hope you do the same :)
riter··on Informer: A bot library that allows masquerading as real users on Telegram
The ability to autoscale accounts with the generation of "real" phone numbers breaks the model
riter··on Informer: A bot library that allows masquerading as real users on Telegram
The easiest negative ethical aspect I would point out is in chat apps like discord or TG we have a reasonable expectation of privacy that is not necessarily implicit in the APIs. It could be one ec2 free-tier instance away from making all that information indexable.
riter··on Informer: A bot library that allows masquerading as real users on Telegram
Some of these applications were intended to be tongue in cheek and point out ethical applications were up to the imagination.
riter··on Informer: A bot library that allows masquerading as real users on Telegram
Not untrue. And its one ngnix ec2 instance away from silently changing it from anyone who joins a channel to read the message to the world indexing all those messages.
riter··on Informer: A bot library that allows masquerading as real users on Telegram
Fair point. At the very least it highlights the security model of OSS in general.
riter··on Informer: A bot library that allows masquerading as real users on Telegram
I wholly admit the title was a bit charged and I appreciate the correction from the mod(s). That said, it questions the security model of privacy apps and the nature of open source. As I mentioned above, there is a reason they make it a hurdle to scale account creation.

It represents more than just a crawler if you have an imagination. That said, I was looking for a solution for one of the listed use-cases and none existed so I did something about it and shared it and now one exists. It takes no creativity to deride a work, and enough to make one and put it out there.

Getting both sides of the feedback has been a fun learning experience and looking forward to putting more out given the amount of feedback! Thank you both :)

riter··on Informer: A bot library that allows masquerading as real users on Telegram
This is effectively true, baseline it is indistinguishable from a "real" person, questioning the security model of openness and potential for mass social engineering. There is a reason why the hurdle of overcoming scaling the creation of a "real" phone number is difficult.
riter··on Informer: A bot library that allows masquerading as real users on Telegram
Yes, it does use MTProto and yes it is a real user. And yes admittedly the title in retrospect was a bit charged but the applications remain the same if extended.
riter··on Informer: A bot library that allows masquerading as real users on Telegram
Yes, the click button is on the todo. I have encountered these and the common one is the button click followed by the basic arithmetic. Solvable but anything beyond this would "defeat" it.
riter··on The Inside Story of BitTorrent Inc’s Collapse
I used to know and work with Delamar at a startup but for the music industry and ringtones... also, with similar concluding results. SMH.
