It's ok guys, you're welcome to keep your third world working conditions, just don't expect the rest of the progressive world to.
I think you should stick to commenting on YouTube videos.
I think, what a lot Americans overlook, is that most people in the rest of developed world want more from life than a high salary. Moving from somewhere with the highest standards of living in the world, such as Toronto, to somewhere that doesn't even make the list of top 5/10 in North America alone such as NYC, might come with a salary increase but it's a significant trade off in terms of other factors.
It is an anonymous, anecdotal, generalised rant and little more and this type of content, as can be witnessed on a plethora of other popular online fora, tend to lead to the same things repeatedly:
- People charging in to furiously counter the generalisation with other shallow personal anecdotes - "Well I have seen men/women do x,y,z!", "In my experience men/women are even worse than men/women at x,y,z!"
- People charging in with the "not all men/women" argument
- People charging in to back the generalisation up and commit a rant of their own on men/women
- etc.
But the resounding repeated behaviour is people charging in, emotions on high, to exclaim shallow, generalised and anecdotal stories of their own. Mainly not to discuss the matter, but to push their agenda in the matter.
This drives the signal:noise ratio in the wrong direction and, if tolerated, degrades the forum as a whole.
I'm not saying that there isn't space for such discussions, but this is not the format for such discussion and only bad can come of it. If anything, mainstream fora have proven to be completely incapable of having rational discussions on gender issues - the more mainstream the less capable (see Reddit.com for example) - and HN is becoming more mainstream as people flood from such sites due to said degradation of the content there.
Being picky over details or striving to make something perfect (in your view) is not obsessive compulsive disorder.
If I could flag this, I would. This is an anonymous post on a completely irrelevant blog that has nothing to do with the world HN surrounds.
Is it too much to ask that Reddit/Tumblr-esque gender wars not be dragged into every online discussion forum available?
From the guidelines: "On-Topic: Anything that good hackers would find interesting. That includes more than hacking and startups. If you had to reduce it to a sentence, the answer might be: anything that gratifies one's intellectual curiosity."
Just look at the quality of the discussion this has spawned - pure and utter trash.
I bought a Chromecast for $40 and the Plex iPad app for $5 and can now sit at the tv, controlled by the iPad, and stream content from my HDD flawlessly.
If most people are so ethical and moral as to not take a bet against another entity, in this case the government, how do they reconcile significant moral and ethical issues such as the following with themselves:
- The fact that a vast quantity of consumer electronic goods are made under conditions that have been documented to be absolutely horrendous in Asia? In factories whose employees are so stomped upon, that there has been a significant issue with employee suicide on the job?
Those morals and ethics certainly haven't prevented "most people" from pushing demand for these consumer electronics in the West.
- Industrial fishing / trawling and the sheer damage it has done to the oceans. There is sustained demand for fish caught using these methods, yet it is these methods that are destroying fish stocks so frequently that they're having trouble replenishing / breeding again. Fish we don't eat, or mammals caught in the activity, end up being tossed back into the water, dead over nothing.
How do most people, being moral and ethical, not just allow this to continue but push demand for it by asking for cheaper and cheaper fish to be available?
- Oil. How are most people, being honest and moral, still fueling demand for oil - and putting pressure in place for cheaper oil (thus increased quantity must be found) - when these activities are polluting oceans, destroying habitats etc. and whose proceeds are propping up very brutal, very oppressive regimes in some oil producing countries in the Middle East?
I could continue listing these absolutely unethical, absolutely immoral activities that we, "most people", continue to support on a daily basis but I believe the point should be clear.
"Most people" do not take advantage of economic / financial opportunities because such opportunities generally require:
i - Significant capital for significant returns
ii - Risk aversion, as one must risk significant capital and may have hugely negative returns, if any at all.
So let us not pretend that most people took the ethical and moral high ground here.
Because the initial backlash came from vacuous, self-righteous social justice keyboard warriors whose time is spent fighting gender wars online.
There's just no feel good factor, no high horse to ride in on, involved in giving out about DRM.
>It has worked great for Western European and Scandinavian countries.
Has it? According to a report by the UN, it would appear the median age by which half of young people have left their parental home is 26 for males and 24 for females [1].
In some areas of Western Europe, unemployment is as high as 25% [2] and is particularly affecting young people.
So could you please quantify your statement that it has worked great for Western European and Scandinavian countries?

You bringing sex into the debate, your accusations of sexism and this point toward you being the sexist, if anyone is. She is CEO. She is almost entirely responsible and accountable for company strategy and performance.
Mayer has proven herself through the ranks of many prestigious technology companies throughout her career, but her performance as CEO has been an embarrassing disaster.
I agree. I clicked the links on the left expecting some sort of in-page action, but was met with tabs being opened which is counter-intuitive to what one has come to expect with in-site/in-app menus.
Or perhaps I've just been spoiled by UI's like that of Alien Blue for Reddit?
How is this content HN appropriate?
