rileyt··on [dead]
Am I missing something, or was the authors lack of free time due entirely to the fact that he was commuting 4 hours, and not at all related to working at a startup like the title suggests?
rileyt··on Redesigned MIT OCW Website
I think something with much more whitespace and less stripes and unnecessary colors would be much easier on the eyes.
rileyt··on Redesigned MIT OCW Website
The functionality is definitely better, but I would have to agree, the design needs some serious help. It has become pretty clear lately that people don't like using ugly websites, even if they work better than their pretty counterparts...
rileyt··on An office with "library rules"
I listen to headphones almost the entire day, but when I want to have a conversation with someone, I sure as hell don't want to have to go to some meeting room to have it. It just seems like asking your employees not to communicate...
rileyt··on University of California introduces a modern logo
It would be really embarrassing if they didn't revert. I'm in.
rileyt··on Silicon Valley's dirty secret - age bias
Age based cultural separations aside, I think a lot of people, have a really hard time grasping that experience isn't directly related with skill. There are tons of 'veteran programmers' who are worse than the majority of 20 year olds in the valley.
rileyt··on Show HN: A personal Gmail
This interface looks really good, but as previously stated, there are a lot of behind the scenes features (security, spam filter and keyboard shortcuts) that keep me with gmail.
rileyt··on BlackBerry 10 is Going to Have the Best Web Browser of Any Mobile Platform
As much as I would love to stop even pretending to care about dealing with blackberry's brutal web browser, I still think that this title is way to bold and extremely unlikely...
rileyt··on Why I Two-Space
I don't understand why people get so worked up about this. I personally one space, but I feel like the difference between the two is so minute that it shouldn't really matter...
rileyt··on Why Responsive Design Is Not Worth It
This article seems way off in so many different aspects, especially the example where they keep the sidebar beside the text on the mobile version and say it is better.

I understand the point of view that responsive isn't the answer to everything, but saying that dekstop versions of sites 'work' couldn't be more wrong in terms of just about everything.

rileyt··on The Sparrow Problem
I agree that if someone could improve email management they would indeed make more money. However, I still feel that sparrow was able to become so popular because it's iPhone interface was so much nicer to use than both Google's and Apple's free alternatives.
rileyt··on Ask HN: What's your favorite shell?
zsh with oh-my-zsh. It has all the features I need, easy to install and update and an active community. Check out the github repo https://github.com/sorin-ionescu/oh-my-zsh
rileyt··on How much does a responsive web design cost?
From your post "Update 17 Jan 2012: Of the top 100 sites most visited on the internet, 71 of them have content specifically designed for mobile devices." -- I feel like websites with extremely large budgets (top 100) would currently be best served by mobile specific sites because they don't have to worry as much about the costs of updating/testing multiple different sites that most others do.

That being said, as the number of different mobiles devices quickly rises it will soon become near impossible to maintain a mobile site specific to every device.
