rileyt··on How to Create a Software Engineer Resume Hiring Managers Will Love
From our experience, that's still relatively uncommon, but a growing trend.

Standard Resume gives you a web resume, in addition to the PDF. The web resumes are a good replacement for a LinkedIn profile if you don't have one, and are a better branded and easier to read version of your profile, if you do have one.

Here is an example: https://standardresume.co/r/dana-andrews

Totally. Spelling mistakes and grammatical errors are the easiest way to destroy an otherwise good resume.

rileyt··on Two Years to Make $10 in Software Revenue
At Standard Resume, we worked with hiring managers from several top tech companies and professional designers to make our templates that have been used by over 100,000 people. There are many factors that go into designing resumes, but the most important is always readability. If it's isn't easy to scan and read the resume, nothing else matters. The good news is that there is plenty of research behind text readability that can be applied to resumes. Having proper line spacing and adequate vertical white space are two of the most important.

I'm curious what you think of our tea plates, based on your personal research. https://standardresume.co/

rileyt··on Two Years to Make $10 in Software Revenue
Likewise with https://standardresume.co/. Our customers are primarily people working in the tech industry.

rileyt··on Ask HN: Thoughts on Applicant Tracking Systems?
Has this been solved better by any other industry? Tech seems particularly bad...
rileyt··on Ask HN: Thoughts on Applicant Tracking Systems?
This sounds awesome!

Starting with smaller companies for free is a great idea. It instantly differentiates you from everything that exists today.

I'm working on a resume builder[1] and have spent a fair amount of time talking with hiring managers and recruiters. I can confirm that the vast majority of them are unhappy with their ATS — even recruiters.

How do you plan to accept applications? Many of our customers have asked us to build something that prefills the application pages with data from their resume, because they find the applications repetitive and annoying. I realize the applicants aren't you customer, but I'm curious of you have thought about it.

Also, do you plan to support automatic parsing of pdf/docx resumes?

rileyt··on FBI used Etsy, LinkedIn to make arrest in torching of Philadelphia police cars
This is a good point. It also one of the many reasons why it's a privacy nightmare.
rileyt··on FBI used Etsy, LinkedIn to make arrest in torching of Philadelphia police cars
In what way is it required? What specifically are they looking for?
rileyt··on FBI used Etsy, LinkedIn to make arrest in torching of Philadelphia police cars
Have you ever felt like you were missing anything? I also deleted mine a long time ago and the only thing I miss is an easy way to contact people that I don't follow on Twitter (I also don't have Facebook).
rileyt··on FBI used Etsy, LinkedIn to make arrest in torching of Philadelphia police cars
It's the same information, but if you put it on your personal site, it would be less likely to be included in mass data sharing/scraping with people you might not want the info shared with.
rileyt··on GitHub isn't fun anymore
I wanted an online resume and refused to sign up for LinkedIn, so I built https://standardresume.co. It's free to use the web version and can automatically import the data from your LinkedIn profile. I'm curious to hear your thoughts if you have a few minutes to check it out.
rileyt··on [dead]
You can use https://standardresume.co/ to import your LinkedIn profile and publish it as a publicly accessible web resume (like this one https://standardresume.co/r/dana-andrews). The web version is free, you only have to pay if you also need a PDF resume.
rileyt··on Finally, I Closed My LinkedIn
I agree that not having the issues you mentioned is more important than the resumes format, assuming the format isn't unreadable. We are planning to add functionality to help with content quality.

We work with recruiters and hiring managers to review the designs. The primary things we review are readability/scanability and visual appeal.

We found that a lot of our customers were having more issues with getting offers than getting interviews, so we have chose to focus more on appealing to hiring managers.

rileyt··on Finally, I Closed My LinkedIn
If you are sick of recruiter spam, another useless feed, having your personal information sold to strangers and having to send links to your LinkedIn profile that looks like shit and has ads on it, you should check out https://standardresume.co.

I'm one of the founders and it's a super simple web resume builder. You can import your LinkedIn profile, pick a resume design that you like and publish it as a responsive website, in minutes.

We make money by charging for our product, not selling your personal information.

If you like VisualCV, you should check out https://standardresume.co. You can import your LinkedIn profile and our resume templates are designed in collaboration with hiring managers at top tech companies.
rileyt··on Finally, I Closed My LinkedIn
You should check out https://standardresume.co. It's a minimalist web resume builder that lets you start by importing your LinkedIn profile. No feed, no recruiter spam and we don't sell your personal data like LinkedIn does.
rileyt··on Finally, I Closed My LinkedIn
Have you seen https://standardresume.co? You can import your LinkedIn profile, choose a template and publish it as a web resume in minutes.
rileyt··on Ask HN: What projects are you working on now?
I built a website that makes it easy for people to find ways to support their favorite NYC restaurants. Restaurants and their staff are having a hell of a time right now and it's not obvious to most people how they can help.

Save restaurants makes it easy to search restaurants by neighborhood and see if they offer takeout, sell gift cards or are accepting donations (with direct links).

I built it in 2 days using Zeit next+now and Firebase for the db. It's crazy how easy it is to spin up simple projects using that stack.

rileyt··on Show HN: A website to help support NYC restaurtants impacted by Covid-19
I built a website that makes it easy for New Yorkers to find their favorite restaurants and see how they can support them.

If you live in NYC, please consider supporting restaurants. If you are unable to support financially, please help by adding restaurants or sharing the link.

rileyt··on The spine of San Francisco is now car-free
It's nice to see private cars not being able to drive down Market, but calling it "car free" is a dishonest title. Taxis, buses, commercial vehicles and muni will make it far from a pedestrians paradise.
rileyt··on The 80/24 Rule
This is really good advice. There are a ton of different reasons why you can end up breaking this rule and almost all of them are things you want to avoid: multi-purpose functions, adding to old functions that should be refactored, adding an extra case to an if statement that should be broken down, etc.
rileyt··on Show HN: Automatically Backup Your Discover Weekly with Rediscover
Rediscover is a side project that I have been running for a few years now and recently made improvements to. It's the easiest way to automatically backup each weeks Discover Weekly playlist so you never lose another great discovery.

Yes, this can be done with IFTTT. I tried that before building Rediscover and found it unreliable. Rediscover also doesn't require an IFTTT account and is faster to setup.

rileyt··on Ask HN: Does the Intercom chat bubble drive you crazy?
Thanks for the fast replies. I was able to kill it by blocking the widget.intercom.io domain with Privacy Badger. I wonder why it wasn't already blocked by default...

rileyt··on Show HN: I made a resume generator for developers
Photos should not be included on resumes sent to most American companies. They are a huge source of bias in the the hiring process and will either be rejected or have the photo removed immediately.
rileyt··on Universal Resume Template
What makes it better for print and pdf?
rileyt··on Universal Resume Template
Thanks leerob! It's nice to see more resume templates focus on typography and readability, instead of distracting visuals, charts, pictures, infographics, etc. Standard Resume has received praise from many recruiters and hiring managers for its similar styling.

If you like the typography centric design of the URT, but are looking for a hosted solution with an easy to use web based editor and style customizer, definitely check out https://standardresume.co. If you want full control of your hosting and styling, URT is the best option I am aware of.

rileyt··on Apple Card
I still have a few privacy questions that I can't find answers to: 1. Will merchants that you purchase from know your name? 2. Does it work with online stores that don't support Apple Pay? Will you have to use your real name and billing address?
