rienbdj··on Job queues are deceptively tricky
Anyone know a good into to queuing theory?
rienbdj··on Ask HN: Should I do a CS masters at Cambridge or start as a new grad at Amazon?
Masters programs are much less competitive than undergrad. It’ll still be there.
rienbdj··on Ask HN: Should I do a CS masters at Cambridge or start as a new grad at Amazon?
Take the job. You can do the masters after. The job offer might not still be there.

Ask HN: add a flag for articles about AI?
rienbdj··on Road to Elm 1.0
I would love to see Elm adopt an effects system as an answer to React hooks.
rienbdj··on Healthy but sedentary people show early decline in cellular energy production
Not sure how one can be healthy and sedentary.
rienbdj··on In San Francisco, even $180k tech salaries are no longer enough
Plus the only group with any disposable incomes increasingly becomes the super rich. So all the support functions of this… restaurants, high end boutiques, wellness clinics, tailors, … start to cluster. The servant class then push prices up further by trying to live a commutable distance to work.
rienbdj··on Show HN: Chess-Inspired Roguelike
What is a beam solver?

Were you able to rig up the solver to the running game?

Curious what this looks like!

rienbdj··on Show HN: Chess-Inspired Roguelike
Cool game.

Seeing as this is HN, please can you talk tech stack?

rienbdj··on Anthropic says Alibaba illicitly extracted Claude AI model capabilities
In the early days of music streaming, many of the entrants were seeding their service with vast libraries of pirated content. The winners cut deals with the copyright holders and then went after the rest.
rienbdj··on GPT-5.5 hallucinates 3x more than MIT-licensed GLM-5.2
I have a theory that LLM generated code in a highly modular style (simple data, pure functions) will be easier to “recover” by a human team when the LLM gets muddled. So Haskell, basically.
rienbdj··on Clojure Hosted on Go
Looks like a nice language. They market it as a Rust-like looks more like an ML to me.
rienbdj··on AI demands more engineering discipline. Not less
> all that matters is that the properties of the system are validated

I don’t think this is possible in practice without leaning on the stability of the code base.

rienbdj··on What job interviews taught me about Kubernetes
Not a bad solution at all. It does require some discipline to write deterministic templates etc. though.
rienbdj··on The founder's playbook: Building an AI-native startup
This feels like a “sell the shovels” move. Social media is full of “this one prompt to get rich quick”. It’s the new “one weird trick”.
rienbdj··on What job interviews taught me about Kubernetes
There are compile-to-yaml config languages
rienbdj··on The computer science degree isn’t dead
Tragedy of the commons. What stops a company taking on the strong junior engineers you just invested time and resources into?
rienbdj··on The computer science degree isn’t dead
Not many people are employed as computer scientists (they are mostly academics) compared to SWEs.
rienbdj··on The computer science degree isn’t dead
Can’t sustain six figure salaries because current prompts are wrong.
rienbdj··on The computer science degree isn’t dead
Cut juniors for AI

Save money

Invest in market share

Increase market cap

Hire the last remaining seniors at higher rates but only where needed

Great time to be a shareholder or staff level engineer. For everyone else, the ladder has been pulled.

rienbdj··on H2JVM – A Haskell Library for Writing JVM Bytecode
Pretty good performance for low effort is a big win.
rienbdj··on OCaml Onboarding: Introduction to the Dune build system
Build systems are a much harder problem, probably because mainstream languages are all edited the same way, but not built the same way.

The closest we have right now are build systems in the Bazel / Buck2 lineage.

rienbdj··on Mathematicians issue warning as AI rapidly gains ground

rienbdj··on A 10 year old Xeon is all you need
Training AI models to drive valuation reminds me of high frequency trading
rienbdj··on Show HN: Hsrs – Type-Safe Haskell Bindings Generator for Rust
Really cool nice job!

With more and more ecosystem libraries being written in Rust (and a Python wrapper) could this be a way to expand the Haskell ecosystem?

rienbdj··on Anthropic acquires Stainless
Reading what Stainless is/was - why was this a company and not an open source project?
rienbdj··on Anthropic acquires Stainless
Effective AI use (in my experience) has human doing the load bearing parts by hand (schemas, api spec, overall architecture, domain types) then AI fills in the blanks.
rienbdj··on Content-defined chunking added to Bazel
Bazel caches tend to have a size limit.

You need to trust your build execution machine anyway. They have your source code and you will be executing the artifacts that they produce!

rienbdj··on If AI writes your code, why use Python?
The post talks a lot about performance, and indeed Python performance is poor. However, it’s not poor enough to matter in the early stages of most projects.

The larger issue is actually correctness IME. Rust offers a better static-type story than Python, sure. But I would consider Haskell or OCaml to get even further gains.
