rickette··on How we migrated Gov.uk notify to AWS elastic container service
Each major cloud vendor has dedicated gov regions for the US government, not so much for non-US govs.
rickette··on Netflix has open-sourced its Maestro Workflow Orchestrator
I was just thinking didn't Netflix already have its own workflow engine: https://github.com/Netflix/conductor, but found out it's archived/EOL so this makes more sense now.
rickette··on Plausible Analytics: GDPR Compliance w/o Cookie Consent Banner
When you host your static site on Cloudflare Pages you'll also get Cloudflare Analytics which is cookieless.
rickette··on Is Kotlin Multiplatform Replacing Flutter?
JetBrains exists since 2000 and is privately owned. Not VC funded. Looks as solid as it gets.
rickette··on Show HN: Use Go's HTML/template to write React-like code
I've given my Go templates a double suffix like index.go.html and index.go.json. Most tools will recognize these as HTML and JSON files so highlighting works as expected. Additionally in JetBrains IDEs you can assign the "GoTemplate" language to .go.html and .go.json files and it will also recognize the template/html and template/text syntax. So this gives you full syntax highlighting of both HTML/JSON and Go templates.

See https://github.com/PDOK/gokoala?tab=readme-ov-file#intellij-... for a script to set this up.

rickette··on If Britain is so bothered by China, why do .gov.uk sites use Chinese ad brokers?
Was flabbergasted by this as well. Anyone know any other countries that allow ads on government websites? This is the first time I'm hearing about this.
rickette··on IBM nearing a buyout deal for HashiCorp, source says
Atlassian
rickette··on How I write unit tests in Go
Tests inside one _test.go file are run sequentially by default, but Go does run tests in parallel across packages.
rickette··on Show HN: I open-sourced the in-memory PostgreSQL I built at work for E2E tests
I used to run all kinds of (custom) fake in-memory servers in my tests. Nowadays I just run the real thing using Testcontainers (https://testcontainers.com)
rickette··on Fault tolerance and resilience patterns for Go
Used the Java version (https://failsafe.dev/) of this library a few times. It's been around for a number of years. Works great!

Glad to see a Go version.

rickette··on Oxide Cloud Computer. No Cables. No Assembly. Just Cloud
Also Oracle Exalogic (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oracle_Exalogic)
rickette··on Ask HN: Did you turn off Google activity tracking?
Yes many years ago. The only annoyance I have is GMaps not remembering recent places. So you have to type in an address every time. Still outweighs being tracked all the time.
rickette··on There are only 12 binaries in Talos Linux
Mongo and Elasticsearch also recommend using XFS. So Talos isn't unique in this. XFS is somewhat more often preferred in data intensive systems.
rickette··on How Netflix really uses Java

rickette··on Documentation for the JSON Lines text file format
Pretty much, discussion: https://github.com/ndjson/ndjson.github.io/issues/1

Also when you're using this with GeoJSON there's https://stevage.github.io/ndgeojson/ which has an actual RFC (https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc8142)

rickette··on Phind-70B: Closing the code quality gap with GPT-4 Turbo while running 4x faster
Deepseek 33B is great. Also runs well on a modern (beefy) MBP.
rickette··on Wddbfs – Mount a SQLite database as a filesystem
Over the network (when using azure or gcp storage) there's also https://sqlite.org/cloudsqlite/doc/trunk/www/index.wiki which doesn't require loading everything in memory.
rickette··on Almost every infrastructure decision I endorse or regret
Azure Container Apps (ACA) and AWS AppRunner are also heavily "inspired" by Google Cloud Run.
rickette··on JetBrains CEO Transition
Why is that? Based on what?
rickette··on Ask HN: How do you setup a new Mac?
Developer scratchpad: https://github.com/IvanMathy/Boop

Outbound firewall: https://objective-see.org/products/lulu.html

Stop working as admin all the time (but switch easily): https://github.com/SAP/macOS-enterprise-privileges

rickette··on Proposed top-level domain string for private use: ".internal"
host.docker.internal
rickette··on 80 years later, GCHQ releases new images of Nazi code-breaking computer
"After the war, Flowers received little recognition for his contribution to cryptanalysis. Flowers was left in debt after the war after using his own personal funds to build Colossus" (src: wikipedia).

Incredible...

rickette··on We switched to Java 21 virtual threads and got a deadlock in TPC-C for Postgres
Indeed, Hikari is the go to connection pool for some years now. It's even the default when running Spring Boot.
rickette··on Mitchell reflects as he departs HashiCorp
Thanks! You made quite an impact establishing all those projects.
rickette··on Templ: A language for writing HTML user interfaces in Go
"A HTML templating language for Go that has great developer tooling" as long as you're using VSCode... I don't see a JetBrains (GoLand/IntelliJ) plugin.
rickette··on Ask HN: What's the best hardware to run small/medium models locally?
Llama models run fine on the M2/M3 Macbooks thanks to llama.cpp/GGML.
rickette··on The Hole: A tiny NYC community forgotten for decades
Feels like material for a movie script, even the name is fitting.
rickette··on Microsoft open-sources ThreadX
The branding is probably also due to AWS having FreeRTOS https://aws.amazon.com/freertos/
rickette··on What has changed in CPU cores in M3 chips?
Yeah, most M-series are plenty fast I think. Just upgraded from a 2018 Intel Macbook to the M3 Max and the change is very noticeable. Hope and plan to keep using this machine again for 5+ years or so.
rickette··on Go, Containers, and the Linux Scheduler
Besides GOMAXPROCS there's also GOMEMLIMIT in recent Go releases. You can use https://github.com/KimMachineGun/automemlimit to automatically set this this limit, kinda like https://github.com/uber-go/automaxprocs.
