rickette··on TernFS – An exabyte scale, multi-region distributed filesystem
Would that kind of data not compress like crazy? Or would they need to keep all that data hot and fast.
rickette··on TernFS – An exabyte scale, multi-region distributed filesystem
Cool. Also https://github.com/deepseek-ai/3FS by DeepSeek which came out of High-Flyer a Chinese HFT firm.
rickette··on TernFS – An exabyte scale, multi-region distributed filesystem
Over 500PB of data, wow. Would love to know how and why "statistical models that produce price forecasts for over 50,000 financial instruments worldwide" require that much storage.
rickette··on Fun with Finite State Transducers
Radix Trees are (often?) used for this purpose, for example in Chi: https://github.com/go-chi/chi. Coincidentally FSTs and Radix trees share some similarities.
rickette··on GitHub is no longer independent at Microsoft after CEO resignation
Lots of comments here remind me of the time GitHub was purchased by Microsoft. It would be the dead of GitHub. While in fact it got better: GitHub Actions (pretty neat CI system) happend under Microsoft. Free private repos happend under Microsoft.

Now this time it could be different. But last time wasn't that bad imho.

rickette··on Show HN: OrioleDB Beta12 Features and Benchmarks
Would Postgres FTS (ts_vector) benefit from this storage engine?
rickette··on Ask HN: What Pocket alternatives did you move to?
For me Kobo support is the most important feature. But haven't found a substitute.

Also no word from Kobo (Rakuten) about this. Very disappointing.

rickette··on Select FOR UPDATE considered harmful in PostgreSQL
tl;dr "Unless you plan to delete a row or modify a key column, always use SELECT FOR NO KEY UPDATE".
rickette··on DuckLake is an integrated data lake and catalog format
Most likely caused by the .select TLD.
rickette··on Show HN: Fahmatrix – A Lightweight, Pandas-Like DataFrame Library for Java
Congrats on putting this out there. There isn't a de facto pandas-like library in Java like you said. But for Kotlin there is: https://github.com/Kotlin/dataframe
rickette··on Show HN: Use Third Party LLM API in JetBrains AI Assistant
It has gotten a lot better IMHO in the latest 2025 release. Ability to enable/disable per project. Ability to favor local models over online models (online as fallback), support for OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, etc. Beter integration overall.
rickette··on GPU Server with 8 RTX 4090
Cool... but this isn't really rack mountable with the GPUs sticking out on top.
rickette··on Europen Union creates Fedora-based Linux distribution for the public sector
The headline suggest this is something official from the EU (commission) which it is currently not.

rickette··on The European Union Has Its Own Linux Distribution and It's Called EU OS
The headline suggest this is something official from the EU (commission) which it is currently not.
rickette··on A 10x Faster TypeScript
Which is a massive pro for any open source project
rickette··on Go 1.24 Is Released
Especially happy with the faster map implementation and also with text/template now supporting range-over-func. Go 1.23 introduced range over function types but the latter didn't work in Go templates until now.
rickette··on Gemini 2.0 is now available to everyone
"what model are you using, exact name please" is usually the first prompt I enter when trying out something.
rickette··on I'll think twice before using GitHub Actions again
Every CI system has its flaws but GitHub Actions in my opinion is pretty nice especially in terms of productivity; easy to setup, tons of prebuild actions, lots of examples, etc.

I've used Tekton, Jenkins, Travis, Hudson, StarTeam, Rational Jazz, Continuum and a host of other CI systems over the years but GitHub Actions ain't bad.

rickette··on Six day and IP address certificate options in 2025
Kinda funny to call the current 90 day certs "long lived". When Let's Encrypted started out more than 10 years ago most certs from major vendors had a 1 year life span. Let's Encrypt was (one of) the first to use drastically shorter life spans, hence all the ACME automation effort.
rickette··on PostgreSQL is the Database Management System of the Year 2024
Out of the box HA would make it complete. Apart from patroni, anyone experience with https://github.com/hapostgres/pg_auto_failover?
rickette··on CTO / cofounder exit deal after 1.5y at 600k revenue without SHA
Interested to hear why you own 49% and he 51% + more voting power. Why the difference?
rickette··on Rosetta 2 creator leaves Apple to work on Lean full-time
Lots and lots of Docker images are only linux/amd64 compatible. Without Rosetta 2 I wouldn't be able to do my job, especially in a team with a mix of Mac and Linux workstations and most images being build as amd64/linux only.
rickette··on Ask HN: How does JetBrains protect their IDE Java source code?
They protect their source code by releasing awesome products that developers happily pay for (I do).
rickette··on Aivres KR6288 Nvidia HGX H200 Server Review
What a beast, couldn't find it in the review but what's the price tag of such a server (with 8x H200)?
rickette··on Gitlab names Bill Staples as new CEO
Most of these sales aren't about acquiring a product but about acquiring a customer base, so it would make perfect sense for Atlassian IMHO.
rickette··on Dependency management fatigue, or why I ditched React for Go+HTMX+Templ
Why Templ? What's wrong with idomatic html/template.
rickette··on Ask HN: Platform for senior devs to learn other programming languages?
Go really got this right, just one 'go' tool for dependency management, build/compile, tests, you name it.
rickette··on Show HN: Vince – A self hosted alternative to Google Analytics
This just warns about using Pebble with an existing RocksDB which isn't the case here. Pebble powers CockroachDB which is a Serious Database.
rickette··on Ask HN: Light self-hosted logs/metrics/traces dashboard?
netdata https://github.com/netdata/netdata
rickette··on Notepad++ is 21 years old
I consider Textmate the notepad++ for MacOS (it's great, but then again I can't stand working on windows).
