richo··on Poll: What is your primary programming language?
Is lisp meant to be "the lisps", or is common lisp to be assumed and scheme a seperate choise?
richo··on Vim Icon Replacement
Maybe I'm just an old fart, but I much prefer the {g,Mac}vim icon.

Most of it is tolerable, but the sparkles just went too far imo.

richo··on Show HN: Banana-controlled Super Hexagon
Dammit, he's better at that game than I am.

On a fucking banana.

richo··on A Python 3 implementation for client-side web programming
Nifty example, but this is why we have integration test suites.

PyPy, jython, ironpython etc all had/have incompatibilities as the language evolves and as they work out the quirks in their respective runtimes.

This isn't compatible with cpython (afaik, none of the other runtimes have ever been COMPLETELY compatible, but this is much further off), but hell, it's pretty awesome.

As an aside, I'd shoot anyone who did that ^^ without a pretty amazing explaination.

richo··on Shown HN: Cats On Me
No.
richo··on Shown HN: Cats On Me
You can also tweak the subdomain to change the number of cats.
richo··on Ask HN: Would you hire me?
For a junior position, yeah I'd get you in for an interview on the back of this.

Anyone who would make a hiring decision without talking to you is insane (And you don't want to work for crazy people).

richo··on Ask HN: Does versioning an encrypted file in a git repo make it less secure?
It depends what encryption algorithm you used. In short- Maybe.
richo··on Plans for Vim 7.4
Sorry my bad. Typing from memory on my phone.

Thanks for clearing it up!

Background tasks, check out dispatch.vim[1]

richo··on I am burning out
I see your point (and in my view- screw contributing if it means interacting with trac), but reading over that issue it does look like his patch wasn't backwards compatible.

The issue was reopened 5 weeks ago so hopefully it resolves well :/

richo··on I am burning out
Speaking as the author of a tremendous amount of software noone uses, I found this ridiculous.

Sometimes it does hurt- mainly when you explain why what you're doing is better (or at least attempt to in objective terms) and someone still uses "the big thing". As an ops guy for a big startup, even though I get that it still kinda sucks.

But if it's causing you to feel burnt out you're taking this too seriously.

> Releasing FOSS is generally at least partially ego-driven: we want to write something that people use and love and talk about.

I think this is self regulating. Those projects rarely take off, because there's not enough motivation to be awesome.

The projects that get traction are the ones the author HAS to build to see if it'll even work.

richo··on I am burning out
Ignoring the self-involvement inherent in the article, if you want to contribute to something big (There's nothing wrong with wanting that sense of "I helped build this"); go contribute to a big FOSS project!

Fix a bug in rails[1] or django[2] (Pretty sure I saw you're a python guy).

Fix some of the hilarious problems with Bower[3] (Saw some js too).

There's an entire world of awesome problems to solve. Go solve them.

richo··on The point of writing software isn't to maintain it forever
Shouldn't that be what we're striving for?

Much though I really hate to admit this, npm and the node community are on the right track here.

richo··on The point of writing software isn't to maintain it forever
Is it though?

Take this example, there's really no reason for me to do anything EXCEPT that the upstream dependencies have been yanked. Now I need to do a bunch of porting.

richo··on 7 Reasons to Hack
1. You enjoy/love it.

FIN.

richo··on Heroku is now the top giver on Gittip
Cheers. It's a totally reasonable decision, and I agree with it generally- except in cases like this.

I'll have a look through this issue and articulate my stance if it's not already represented.

richo··on Heroku is now the top giver on Gittip
Is it optional to show who you tip? I'm curious about who's contributions they're thanking.

I'm guessing the people who've written the FOSS heroku runs on, but very curious.

richo··on Best ultrabook for linux? [April 2013 edition]
Portability goes a long way, and iirc it's a smaller form factor.

That said, I'm not sure that I'd choose it over the pixel either.

richo··on Best ultrabook for linux? [April 2013 edition]
Not sure. I haven't seen one in the flesh, but I've heard good things about it. Nothing first, or even second hand though.

Personally, I wouldn't buy an ultrabook for the graphics performance, cooling is just too problematic to do anything overly shiny in my view, but I can't imagine you'd have issues running a shiny window manager or decoding 1080p video, which is the two most graphics intensive tasks I do.

richo··on Best ultrabook for linux? [April 2013 edition]
Dell just released their native-linux-running XPS:

http://www.dell.com/Learn/us/en/555/campaigns/xps-linux-lapt...

1080p screen and you can assume the hardware works with linux.

richo··on Ask HN: Why you do open source?
Marketing is hard. Open source is less dicking around and more time to write software.
richo··on Show HN: A Boilerplate Generator for OOP JS
Can you add a readme for what it's meant to do?

It seems opinionated to the point of being meaningless.

richo··on "How I Explained REST to My Wife" taken down because of gender-oriented nature
My recollection could have been wrong, I seemed to recall the dialog seeming a little contrived but not to the degree you describe.

I might try to pull it out of cache and then reconsider.

richo··on "How I Explained REST to My Wife" taken down because of gender-oriented nature
Sigh, so an interesting and thought provoking article is taken down because it could have been percieved as sexist? Why not just s/wife/partner/g and call it a day?

I don't think that it was inflammatory. Maybe it's due to wildly unchecked privilege, but I read it as "A way to convey the REST metaphor to a nontechnical person". I didn't see it as "women are stupid and need handholding to understand technology".

richo··on Hackersh - Hacker Shell - a pipeline for processing security information
Seems to ignore a lot of the flexibility of a traditional shell.

There's not a lot of ways to put all these tools together, that I can see.

richo··on Days since GitHub hired someone
"Whoops, all the things went wrong!"

Definitely not going to space today.

richo··on Thrusters powered by ionic wind may be an efficient alternative
> Give off no heat

I'd love if someone had a link for this.. I thought termodynamics ruled out running tons of current through something about any heat?

richo··on Show HN: my new app Timebar has a clever UI (I think)
Thankyou!

The app looked well and truly worth the $3 so I just bought it, but good to know for next time.

richo··on Show HN: my new app Timebar has a clever UI (I think)
I spent a while trying to work out where you are meant to enter them.

I like to think I'm reasonably clever, but apple's interfaces make me feel like a luddite.
