rice7th··on Emacs-ng: A project to integrate Deno and WebRender into Emacs
No. Webreneder is a graphics renderer/library very similar to skia, however webrender is developed by mozilla, written in rust and used in firefox and servo. It basically gives emacs GPU acceleration since cairo doesn't have it IIRC.
rice7th··on Just paying Figma because nothing else works
Yes but for figjam you need to buy it separately IIRC
rice7th··on Just paying Figma because nothing else works
I know Inkscape is terrible for making diagrams, but what I am trying to say is that figma is even worse. Inkscape has at least some tools to help you create some diagrams, but figma is just for UI/UX design, not diagrams.

> Not the best though. That honour goes to IPE.

Never heard of IPE, I am going to check it out, thanks.

rice7th··on Just paying Figma because nothing else works
My point is: does figma have it? No! Figma has not a single option for diagram drawing; at least Inkscape is trying to. I am just confused about why he chose figma for this specific use case
rice7th··on Just paying Figma because nothing else works
Yet Inkscape's snapping system changes pased on where your cursor is, making fine tuned alignments much better than ANY other software. Yes, I know it is a complex system that's not very well documented, but my point still stands.
rice7th··on Just paying Figma because nothing else works
Yes I know, but mesh gradients are a part of Inkscape since at least 0.92, which is when I started using it, aka 2019.
rice7th··on Just paying Figma because nothing else works
Yeah but luckily they're switching to GTK4 AND an OpenGL renderer, meaning that it will be much snappier on both MacOS and Windows.
rice7th··on Just paying Figma because nothing else works
Yes, but what I am trying to say is that figma is not a diagramming tool. It wasn't built to create diagrams. Inkscape wasn't either, yet Inkscape still has some support for diagram creation, even if it is quite poor.
rice7th··on Just paying Figma because nothing else works
Yes but figma wasn't made for diagrams either. Both are vector design tools, not diagramming tools, that's why I am asking: if figma was okay then why not Inkscape?
rice7th··on Just paying Figma because nothing else works
I am wondering why he didn't at least try Inkscape. Since 1.0 it has gotten SO much better. It even has much better export quality compared to figma (from much more accurate gradients to strokes), and it has one of the best snapping systems ever created. He should seriously check it out!
rice7th··on What do you think about the Jule programming language?
Yes, ok, but it is too similar to Rust: that is the problem!
rice7th··on Inkscape 1.3
Inkscape also has an experimental OpenGL backend that seems fairly stable. When I tested it, it seemed pretty stable and glitchless. I hope it will replace the Cairo backend soon, since OpenGL will give Inkscape even MORE performance!
rice7th··on What do you think about the Jule programming language?
Because honestly the syntax is kinda the same and even the points are similar: performance and safety. All problems that rust already solved. Plus Rust has a HUGE ecosystem in rapid growth, and it is quickly reaching C/C++ levels.

Anyways, I don't think that there's a lot wrong with it, just don't commercialize it as a literal rust copy

rice7th··on What do you think about the Jule programming language?
It looks like a Rust copy
rice7th··on Reddit has disabled copy/paste on right click
Reddit seems to be trying really hard to destroy themselves these days
rice7th··on Retrowin32: Async, DLL loading, tracing execution, and Zig
Thank you for the answer. I was learning assembly and after trying it out on Linux x86_64 I tried on Windows but I got very confused from the lack of syscall docs, so after searching I got to such conclusion. Still, thanks for clearing this out!
rice7th··on Servo, the parallel browser engine written in Rust
Sciter is very interesting. It uses a custom rendering engine with a custom fork of QuickJS. Extremely lightweight and fast. Quite a nice project honestly.
rice7th··on Servo, the parallel browser engine written in Rust
Yeah. With each Andreas Kling browser hacking video Ladybird becomes either faster or more bugfixed. Still unstable and a bit slower than servo, but Geez it render Discord! (Kinda. They're working on it)
rice7th··on Ask HN: Is Rust worth investing in as a reliable C-alt given its recent saga?
Well, it depends on what you define by passing a pointer. Is the pointer mutable (needs to modify the data it is pointing at?) or immutable? Is it a reference ("guaranteed" pointer?) Or just a plain old pointer? (const T and mut T)? Or do you want a smart pointer, like Box<T> or a unique_ptr-ish thing with a reference counted pointer via Rc<T>?

Want to pass and modify data from and to multiple threads? Yea just drop an Arc<Mutex<T>> and you're good to go. If you just want to pass some data, even around threads, without modifying it, then a plain old borrow is your best bet. Make sure to get the lifetimes right tho!

rice7th··on Steel Bank Common Lisp 2.3.5 released
Still better than no SIMD at all imo

I am no expert but recently I found out that windows syscalls are a complete mistery. They're almost never mentioned in the official docs and with each update they can shift their position. I've found out a reverse engineered version online but they only got the name and the number of parameters. This brings the question how on earth are you supposed to generate code with windows syscalls? Like if I am building a compiler, how the heck am I supposed to know what to put where? Are such syscalls just defined in the winapi and abstracted away? Or each compiler needs to do some black magic fuckery to get core features?
rice7th··on No_color
Yeah. If you don't like colors just diable them from the terminal.
