It only appears incoherent because you might have conflated two issues in your response (wealth gap and plight of immigrants). Not saying you did it intentionally.

Regarding immigrants, you need to meet more of them to get a better idea. The situation in US is much worse than most western countries. I encourage you to read up on why it is such a massive political issue (Obama's attempted reforms and executive orders, Dreamers, Path to citizenship etc.). Here is one example: https://www.cato.org/blog/150-year-wait-indian-immigrants-ad...

How much of an impact would you say it has on the index? If it were normalized for “citizens only” do you really think US will fare much better?

If your larger point is about treatment of immigrants, how do you feel about US taxing its immigrants as citizens after 1 yr of stay, but putting them on a line to actual citizenship that could be more than multiple lifetimes long? Didn’t we fight a war about “taxation without representation”? I’m not even talking about literally tearing apart poor immigrant families while all along extracting taxes from them.

Not sure how to respond to a comparison of 0.2 miles of Santana Row to Singapore. It feels we are grasping at the straws here.

Wealth gap list here. Sort by 2019 Gini. You will find US at the worse end of the spectrum (#4) and Singapore is at #64: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_wealth_in...

Which is a sentiment I wouldn't dismiss. If you have visited Singapore and SF the contrast will hit you in your face hard. To US folks, Singaporeans lack political freedom. To Singaporeans, US friends lack a clean habitat, safety, healthcare, and bunch of other factors that should be a given in modern society. They see the sad wealth gap here (and hence the influence of money on democracy), the growing idiocracy, and a country once on top now sadly in fast decline. So maybe we should hear them out and learn the good parts.
riantogo··on The old internet shows signs of quietly coming back
I hope it is true. I have been nostalgic about old school forums and during covid lock down built a platform for anyone to host one (and hopefully make meaningful revenue). However, I'm finding it really difficult to get traction. I hope it is because of my poor marketing skills and not because no one really cares for the old internet beyond some fond memories.
riantogo··on Meta Unveils New AI Supercomputer
Many years back the military connected some 1700 PS3s to create the world's 35th most powerful supercomputer. That needed few racks and could do 500 tflops. One latest XBox can do 12 tflops sitting in your living room. Of course the supercomputers would also have gotten magnitudes faster since. But hope this gives some sense of physical size.

In the UK are you able to straight up create a gambling website/app? As an example, could I create a blackjack app and accept/payout money using, say, paypal or stripe? No other hoops to jump through?
riantogo··on Zendesk pretends to be open source?
I will look into git/github. Thanks for the pointers.
riantogo··on Zendesk pretends to be open source?
Somewhat related, last time when I posted about my forums platform[1] that I'm trying to get off the ground, someone here asked if it is open source so they can contribute. Now, I would love for it to be open source and have the community enhance the features (or even clone it for themselves), but I don't know how to set up an open source project. I'm guessing it is more than just zipping up the source files and making it available for download. Any pointers on how best to go about doing it? Any best practices?

riantogo··on Ask HN: Who wants to collaborate?
Currently it is not. And mostly because I don't know how to maintain an open source project.
riantogo··on Ask HN: Who wants to collaborate?
I’m thinking of bringing back good old forums. Completed the development but haven’t gotten time to spread the word and build monetization tools (for forum owners). Anyone wants to team up in 2022? https://discoflip.com
riantogo··on Tumblr has added more strict tag filtering for their iOS app
I think we are saying the same thing. Tumblr could operate the same way as reddit and enjoy similar ad revenue.
riantogo··on Tumblr has added more strict tag filtering for their iOS app
So you are saying there appears to be a way (likely nontrivial) that Tumblr could adopt (maybe same as reddit) to keep both advertisers and community happy?
riantogo··on Ask HN: Have you found something you love to do? If yes how?
I never respond to those emails, but after reading your comment I'm thinking maybe I should reply with, "what % of those X millions is being offered for this role?"
riantogo··on Native-like Navigation of Web apps
I'm a web developer and typically use bootstrap or materialcss for my projects. I'm looking for a simple css framework that makes my next webapp look and feel like a mobile app. Any suggestions?
riantogo··on What does microblogging give you that forums didn't?
I'm very much a forums person (reddit, hn etc.) and never "got" twitter even after many attempts. But I think on forums front there is a missing economic model. Currently the platforms make all the money on the back of content generated by the community. I think the time has come to focus on enabling forum owners to monetize. Over covid I built https://discoflip.com to validate this. I would be very interested in your feedback.
riantogo··on 10 years of whatever this has been
Won't regulations make it expensive? I don't think the technical aspects of money causes the high transaction cost. The regulations does.
riantogo··on Use forums rather than Slack/Discord to support developer community
Somewhat related, I'm looking for few good folks to start some forums of their interest at https://discoflip.com (shameless plug for my covid side gig). #developer is still available at the time of this comment.
riantogo··on Ask HN: What you up to? (Who doesn't want to be hired?)
I finally got my covid side project up and running. It allows you to easily start a forum that you can monetize. I always wanted to build something like this and I like how it is shaping up. Please do check it out https://discoflip.com
riantogo··on Culture shock
It took me years to get used to cars stopping for pedestrians to cross. I don't think I'm completely there yet even after couple decades.
riantogo··on Meta
In my personal experience with tiktok it will pigeonhole you rapidly. But overall the platform is heavy on silly and fun content (not sure if it intentionally maintained like that by the owners). So before you know it you are pigeonholed into extremely fun stuff (compared to tediously polarizing content on other big apps).

Now over time it might devolve into bad content if there is no higher level moderation to keep it on lighter side of things. I would personally be okay with not all platforms being totally democratic.

riantogo··on Publish your PWA to the iOS App Store
Awesome. Thanks.
riantogo··on Publish your PWA to the iOS App Store
Can you accept in-app payments with Capacitor? Asking because I did not see it listed as an official plugin.

My goal is to create a simple kids app that can be monetized via monthly subscription. I can build a traditional website, but don't have much clue on the easiest way to also publish it as an app (both for iOS and Android). Any recommendation on how to go about it if my skill is web development?

riantogo··on Please stop closing forums and moving people to Discord
The performance sucks. 30 out of 100 on chrome web vitals. We are overhauling it this week (including eliminating the post load). Great point about hotlinking images which I have taken a note of (also creates mixed content http issues). I didn't think there would be value in releasing the source. So hadn't thought about it. But now that you mentioned it, maybe I should.
riantogo··on Please stop closing forums and moving people to Discord
I'm swimming the other way and trying to create hosted software for plain old forums (https://discoflip.com). I started it to scratch my own itch and then opened it up. Honestly, not getting much traction.
riantogo··on $28.50 Beer at LaGuardia Sparks Audit of New York Airport Concession Prices
Ahh... LaGuardia. Last time I flew out of there they had porta potty for toilets. It might have been one of the worst airports I have been at.
riantogo··on Clubhouse opens its doors to everyone, is anyone rushing to get in?
I had an invite a while back and got on there. The concept seemed cool, but the content felt like the worst of web in voice format. It could be just that I was in the wrong rooms (I only checked out a few that were recommended).
riantogo··on Show HN: Build and monetize your online community
During covid lockdown I became interested in the future-of-work and how people are now gravitating towards alternate revenue streams. I wanted to build something in that space. So here is my humble attempt to allow users to grow an online community and monetize it.

Think of it as a subreddit or fb group, but focused on allowing the moderators to monetize for themselves.

riantogo··on Bezos donates $100M each to CNN contributor Van Jones and chef Jose Andres
That is the romanticized version. The history of man is exploration, expansion and exploitation. Destroying everything nice in its path. We destroyed other species, our own species if they looked different, and finally we have all but destroyed the planet. Rather than staying on that path maybe a better approach for humanity is compassion, kindness and helping each other out.

Having said that, I'm totally okay with billionaires spending money on such activities as it puts money back in the economy. The more the better.
