rfrank··on Obama Expands Surveillance Powers on His Way Out
His point was broadly about the tone in which Trump has been described in the media, and how that contributes to the division that currently exists in America.

"How do you talk people down after spending a year telling them Hitler was coming to power?" vs. "How do you talk people down after spending a year telling them a fascist was coming to power?" isn't a very meaningful distinction to me in that context. Your mileage may vary. Many mainstream outlets have expressed that opinion for a long time, and it's a point of view I've seen defended here on HN many times in political threads. I don't think it's a fringe viewpoint at all.

Reddit at large is extremely hostile to Wikileaks post election. Another staffer did an AMA a couple months ago and the tone from people asking questions was the same.

> Lay the groundwork for people think voting against the Republicans is a matter of life and death.

Liberals already tried that this election, it's still impossible to go a day without a MSM outlet saying Trump is literally Hitler and that America is now a fascist state. It's probably not wise to eschew diplomacy when the GOP is as powerful at all levels of government from local to national as they have been in 80 years.

rfrank··on The Developer Marketing Guide
Yes in the sense of there being industry trends you should keep up with and talk about. One thing with b2b sites is that you don't really need viral content, because you likely have a very specific idea of who your customers are.

Depending on the field, lots of b2b topics aren't super competitive SEO wise, which makes it possible to really dominate a particular topic in search results. Long tail keywords [1] are particularly helpful from my experience.

While I generally agree with your point, you also probably know what guns James Bond, Al Pacino in Scarface, Dirty Harry, and De Niro in Taxi Driver all shot.
rfrank··on NBA Highlights – Search for video of NBA plays
I can't find any retired players, maybe you can. Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, etc. Pretty sure it's just this year for results.
rfrank··on NBA Highlights – Search for video of NBA plays
Would be pretty hilarious if the only result was the 81 point game.
rfrank··on NBA Highlights – Search for video of NBA plays
I like the idea, but I'm having some trouble with it. Search results are only from this season, right? A search for Steve Nash showed a Steph Currey highlight as result one for me. More slang oriented searches like "dunked on" or "dunks on" don't really work either. Dunk/Dunks shows up in results, but nothing beyond that. Was looking for one of my all time favorite highlights, Baron Davis dunking on Kirilenko [1]. For me this type of thing would be pretty awesome with some sort of stats element. A 'visual box score' vs. 'highlights search engine.' ie show the box score for a game, and clicking in any particular field shows video of the plays that produced those stats.

rfrank··on Reddit overhauls upvote algorithm to thwart cheaters
"It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his internet-ego depends on his not understanding it."

If you refuse to see that I simply disagree with the fact their stickying constitutes vote-manipulation, and assume I'm arguing in bad faith because I don't hold the same viewpoint as you, then I think we're done here.

rfrank··on Reddit overhauls upvote algorithm to thwart cheaters
So every sub is vote manipulating by nature of being a group that votes together on specific posts? I see. Don't break the site from the sidebar would have been a better option.
rfrank··on Reddit overhauls upvote algorithm to thwart cheaters
Stickying a new post so users see / vote on it faster is vote manipulation? Doesn't seem to be the case per reddit itself. [1]

You can stop being dishonest anytime now. You have a limited perspective. They had to make several internal rule changes specific to them (which they enforce) before any site wide changes happened. They get brigaded and attacked just like any other major political sub, but only they have unique rules made for them. Why are you purposefully ignoring why they act that way? It's like having a guy in the group who thinks it's acceptable to push people around because they have a majority opinion, and double down when people don't accept it. They had several posts at the top of /r/all yesterday [1-4], but I guess they don't go as high.

rfrank··on Reddit overhauls upvote algorithm to thwart cheaters
Yes, and that's why they make rules that only impact the_donald, which in turn encourages the_donald to lash out. Because they are being singled out for censorship. I think you've got a pretty selective memory of sticked threads in the_donald, but whatever. Should they be nice to a community that consistently calls it the_dipshit, etc, and whose administrators continually make changes to limit the reach of their voice, and their voice alone?

The sticky change came in conjunction with limiting the number of posts it was possible to have on the front page, and a few others. Saying the change to sticky policy is what's keeping the_donald posts off the front page of /r/all would be incorrect.

> The subreddit in question specifically and continually used the tool in a negative, unconstructive manner

I don't think that's true, I think you just don't like the content.

rfrank··on Reddit overhauls upvote algorithm to thwart cheaters
So not using a tool in the way that the designer intends constitutes abuse now? An interesting perspective for a community with hacker in the name.
rfrank··on How to not fuck up your manufacturing startup
I think there's some truth in both perspectives, and the balance of process vs. software improvement comes down to how aggressively you need to compete on price. On cheaper stuff where prices is a bigger determining factor, it makes sense to me to focus on process and driving down cost. For markets where that's less of an issue, software innovation is the way to go. The Here One headphones [1] seem like they manage the balance pretty well. The Onyx One is super cool by the way.

rfrank··on Tell HN: Political Detox Week – No politics on HN for one week
> When I look at the tone of the downvoted/flagged "dissident" comments (not a value judgment, just an objective description of perspectives that are not generally well-tolerated in intelligent, cultured, Western circles today), and compare it to the tone of the "normative" comments, I see very little difference.... But the banhammer is applied very asymmetrically -- both by voters/flaggers, and by moderators. Or so it appears to me.

Very much agreed. I find dang having a problem with political accounts amusing, given it was dang's moderation that inspired me to make mine.

rfrank··on AngelList acquires Product Hunt
Yes, the differences (and lack of, really) "summering culture" is something I acknowledged in the first sentence of my earlier comment.
rfrank··on AngelList acquires Product Hunt
Yeah, the whole thing seem to be about going somewhere that has weather your home doesn't have. In norcal that means snow.
rfrank··on AngelList acquires Product Hunt
Never really been a thing around here from my experience, and I grew up in Alamo, surrounded by the type of people who would happily flaunt a summer home. Second properties are usually in Tahoe or southern California somewhere, maybe Hawaii. I know a few people who have done the whole Napa thing and started their own labels of varying quality, but that's less common.
rfrank··on AngelList acquires Product Hunt
SomethingAwful's forums required a paid membership and have been around a long time. IMO one of the points of a paid model is keeping membership down to people who actually care enough to pay said membership.
rfrank··on Dear Jeff Bezos: Is a suicide attempt enough, or do you still need more data?
Lower level employees at companies like this tend to get deridden for speaking about their situation and told to "just get a new job / move to a new city". This thread, that Yelp girl, and so on. Disapproval of your circumstances or employment situation have to be expressed in just the right tone and wording to be considered valid by some.

People in the mainstream media and online do defend pedophilia though [1-4]. If both aren't crimes, I see no meaningful difference in the accusations.

Is accusing people of being racist, sexist, homophobic, uneducated, etc. not just 'talking'?

Because an entire election cycle just completed where one side used those words to discredit their political enemies.

rfrank··on Reddit’s CEO edited comments that criticized him
I'll respond in tone to people who accuse me of trolling all day. Why was the comment I replied to not flagged as well? "Look up analogy in the dictionary u troll" provided a lot of constructive commentary to the thread? Your bias is showing.

If you truly believe internet randos are some unstoppable force of human nature, then you're amazingly ignorant, and probably cripplingly sensitive. That must suck, sorry about that.
