rfolstad··on BlackBerry Messenger will launch on Android and iOS
I really like the Blackberry strategy. The android application framework will be adopted to take advantage of the large app pool. Their new OS for playbook and phones going forward will be their proprietary qnx kernel and web browser along with their own app store with only approved android apps.

They can control the experience and the app store to cut down on the crap apps and provide a more seamless interface.

Rim might just turn out to be the Apple of the android world. Something both samsung and motorola tried but imo failed miserably.

This news seems like a stepping stone in that direction.

For the people saying its a bad idea for RIM to increase the number of people you can chat with on bbm i just dont see how this is a bad thing no matter how u spin it. If someone i need to talk to decides to go with an iPhone or Android phone then i might think about switching too since i can't bbm them anymore.

rfolstad··on Dear Google, I Have More Than 10,000 Contacts
Gmail contacts sync with mobile phones like the G1 which don't have tons of memory or processor power. Try using one of those phone with 9000+ contacts and its not a nice experience.

The limitation is there for performance reasons. Besides why is your sales guy is using gmail as his crm?

rfolstad··on Android is Google's Agent Smith
What the author seems to be missing is that Google created Android to prevent Apple controlling the mobile space and locking them out. Fragmentation may not be the goal but its inevitable however google doesn't care. Google makes just as much money from iphones and ipads as it does from fragmented android phones. The goal is to ensure Apple doesn't have ultimate control of the mobile space because then they would just cut google out.
rfolstad··on Microsoft Buying Adobe?
Microsoft wants to bundle flash into their web browser and phones just like google?!
rfolstad··on Don't make your Android app free for 1 day
Good to know but about the free thing but the rest of your issues aren't issues at all. The guides explain all this stuff. How did you ever get your app uploaded and approved for the apple app store if you can't follow simple instructions like the ones that explain how to publish your app to the android market?
rfolstad··on 10,000+ users in 24 hours & YC funding a few days later: lessons learnt
How do you justify removing gmail ads and replacing them with your social addon? Isn't google going to be slightly pissed?
rfolstad··on Ask HN: If you were teaching web apps, what would you have your students build?
Assuming these students know how to build a basic web app using a javascript library like jQuery.

Project 1

html5 local storage /sqldb using javascript for the front end.

This is a standalone web app that supports touch interfaces and manages sql of the students choice in the browser storage. ie.. inventory db, profile db, tweet db something crud.

Project 2

Now build a server that supports basic user authentication and get ready to store your data from Project 1 in a sql db.

Project 3

Build Registration/authentication into Project 1 and support online/offline sql db w/ sync via web api

Project 4 SSL and encrypted data

rfolstad··on Full Analysis of iPhone Economics: Bad News?
How is this bad news? The consulting firms charging 35K per app are making a killing!
rfolstad··on Microsoft Cross-browser Test Results Summary
Hilarious!

Such irony. We respect how challenging it is to build one page that works the same in every browser as the technology advances and customer expectations rise.

Then what's stopping them from including IE6,7 and 8 in their "tests" and fixing this whole mess they created in the beginning. They act like those previous products aren't their responsibility... fucking joke

rfolstad··on Thoughts on Flash
Pot Calling Kettle Black?

I don't see steve jobs allowing us to submit HTML5 apps to the appstore? They must be written in his closed proprietary format with a goal of locking you in to using their tools (xcode). Just like adobe wants to lock you into their proprietary format (flash).

His arguments sound good though. And it would be great for adobe to add HTML5 as a target but i don't think the spec is quite ready. Does webkit on the iphone expose all the devices to implement say chatroulette?

Flash is a great tool to develop cross platform apps until the html5 spec can expose enough of the underlying os.
