reubano··on Web Scraping with Beautiful Soup (2014)
BS4 is easier but scrapy is more powerful. E.G., with scrapy you can program to follow all 'next' links and download 100s of pages in parallel. BS4 is more for grabbing content from a single page.
reubano··on Show HN: Make an app by adding JSON to this app
This is very cool! Do you have a spec to share? First thing i thought of is that it would be awesome to write webapp and static site generator implementations of the jason spec.

Im in the process of making my own static site, and im storing as much of configuration and content as possible in json.

reubano··on Show HN: KQ – Simple Job Queue for Python Using Kafka
Ok, that makes sense. I've never dealt with the scale you are talking about so have yet to run into these issues with redis. It may be best to put this info in the readme so people can decide for themselves when to use RQ or KQ.

Why should I use this over the simplier RQ?

Congrats on your success! Would you mind outlining how you made it on techcrunch? Also, which subreddits did you find most valuable to generate feedback/promote your site?

API Standard Practices

Generally, our public APIs follow a standard set of best practices:

- All APIs follow REST principles.

- JSON is the standard payload. Some APIs may include additional formats such as XML and in such cases media type headers are used to specify your preference.

- Due to the sensitive nature of most data that is exchanged with American Express, you will commonly find HTTP POST methods used where you may expect to find either GET or DELETE methods used. The primary purpose is to prevent sensitive search criteria from being used in the Query string, moving it instead to the Body.

----------------

So they claim to be RESTful yet not support GET or DELETE calls. Do they even realize what they are saying?

Nice writeup! Any chance you'll support macports for those of us who never jumped ship to homebrew?
reubano··on Scalable Stream Processing: A Survey of Storm, Samza, Spark and Flink
I wrote riko [1] with exactly this use case in mind. Its a simple python stream processing engine.

I completely agree. It seems like the only way to currently get this information is through the robo advisors.

Agreed. For me, forking is like super starring. Ive starred over 1000 repos, but hv forked < 100.

You have no idea how long I've been waiting for this. I seriously thought couchdb was dead. Looking forward to more frequent releases in the future.

Good idea, what are your workflows?

reubano··on Wire open-sourced
IANAL but I thought the compatibility was only one way. I.e., you can use MIT code in a GLP project but you can't do the reverse. My understanding is if you use GPL code in an MIT project, you have to make your entire project GPL.
reubano··on Show HN: Riko – A Python stream processing engine modeled after Yahoo! Pipes
Pretty neat! I'm guessing that concord isn't limited to just map/reduce... correct? I think building in integrations to other systems in the stream processing ecosystem is key. First on the list is to integrate with popular workflow schedulers so that you can design topologies which riko would then parse.

Next up I think would be supporting custom sources/sinks such as Twitter, HDFS, RDMS, etc. What exactly would be involved in "porting" riko to concord and what would the advantages be for doing so?

reubano··on Show HN: Riko – A Python stream processing engine modeled after Yahoo! Pipes
> ...all can be done in runtime, w/o restart of the full topology...

That's pretty impressive! So something like react/elm hot reloading?

> This is really interesting. Have you looked at Apache Beam?

Just gave it a look. Took a while to find some examples with code, but once I did it made a bit more sense.

> Beam is runner-independent and you can take the same code and run it at scale on a cluster, wether it's spark, flink, or google cloud.

I thought that was pretty cool.

> As for riko more specifically, Beam will have soon a python sdk, but I'm unsure if there will be a python standalone runner. Maybe this is something to look into...

A python standalone runner would be very useful. Otherwise I'm hesitant to go much further since my goal is to have a pure python solution for working with streaming data. Most libraries require installing java and that is what I'd like to avoid.

Care to share your code? I'd like to see a proper push implementation.

How does concord differ from the others? spark/storm/flink/etc...? Aside from being written in C that is.
