return_to_monke··on X12: Requirements for a successor to the X11 protocol (2013)
does Wayland have network transparency tho?
return_to_monke··on Will Carbon Replace C++?
> Dart is a language on top of JavaScript and other languages with the mission to be the main language for the Flutter project, addressing the creation of cross-platform apps.

The JavaScript part is a factual error. Dart can compile to js. Dart can also soon compile to wasm, but most of dart code runs on the dart VM and has nothing to do with JS.

return_to_monke··on TikTok just dropped a new realistic beauty filter
do people want this? why do people want this? this sounds very distopian.

return_to_monke··on Pulsar – A Community-Led Hyper-Hackable Text Editor
the big question: is it going to be open source, tho?
return_to_monke··on Meta rolls out AI language model LLaMA
got any citations on that one, mate?
return_to_monke··on LLaMA: A foundational, 65B-parameter large language model
The code. They didn't release a model tho, so unless you have a lot of money or get granted access to it, not for you.
return_to_monke··on Don't believe ChatGPT – we do not offer a "phone lookup" service
kinda related: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34889336.
return_to_monke··on Social media is a cause, not a correlate, of mental illness in teen girls
my only nitpick is - if social media were truly a drug, as some suggest, studies asking participants to reduce time on it wouldn't work because of addiction. how do we counter this?
return_to_monke··on Open source solution replicates ChatGPT training process
to be fair they really are not there yet. They are just in the "data collection" phase, the actual training and then tuning is still to do.

but hey, those are the same people who made the dataset (laion5b) for stable diffusion. I have hope.

return_to_monke··on A Docker footgun led to a vandal deleting NewsBlur's MongoDB database (2021)
can you please explain why?
return_to_monke··on Open source solution replicates ChatGPT training process
there is

https://github.com/laion-ai/open-assistant being built in the open already. you can contribute too.

please also notice that the article you linked is about the text classifier of the frontend and not the LLM itself

return_to_monke··on Grug Notes, A tool for text: simple, fast, self-organizing notes
you guys have an API?
return_to_monke··on The Janet Language
vaguely kinda related. I want to like lisp for its features but the syntax is too much for me to pick up without serious time investment, which I am not sure I want to make.

are there any other languages that support for example lisp-like interactive REPL, eg analyzing program state while it is running?

return_to_monke··on United States National Radio Quiet Zone
from the article:

> The area has also attracted people who believe they suffer from electromagnetic hypersensitivity, though scientific experiments have shown this condition is caused by the nocebo effect rather than electromagnetic waves

return_to_monke··on Google and Mozilla are working on iOS browsers that aren't based on WebKit
> no extensions

why is that a feature and not a drawback?

return_to_monke··on Stop developing this technology
if this was a discussion on generative AI, I'd agree that the cat is out of the bag and there's no stopping this now.

BUT.

what are people using deepfakes for, in good faith? can someone provide one example that isn't malicious?

the best I could imagine is maybe amateur filmmakers deepfaking their faces onto existing footage to cut costs - but it doesn't seem that this outweighs the drawbacks

return_to_monke··on Ask HN: How do you plan on making money with Open AI API?
that's amazing! this could be called something like a ... pyramid pattern? what do you think?

return_to_monke··on Ask HN: What simple facts have you learned surprisingly late in life?
please show a language whose HashMap type does compile-time checking. I am actually interested.
return_to_monke··on Diff Models – A New Way to Edit Code
while from the same company, same lab, I don't think this is what the article you linked is about. To me, that seems like a general purpose LLM and this just for code.
return_to_monke··on Ask HN: What simple facts have you learned surprisingly late in life?
hard disagree. Mistyped a name? with classes you get an error on compile time. Dictionaries? only on runtime.

plus, you won't need to remember every field because your editor can autocomplete it for you

return_to_monke··on Seven years on, what do we know about the disappearance of flight MH370? (2021)
sorry, missed that.
return_to_monke··on Seven years on, what do we know about the disappearance of flight MH370? (2021)
what I don't understand is: if the plane could make contact with the satellite, why aren't there automated systems in place to send location info through that channel? can someone explain?
return_to_monke··on Seven years on, what do we know about the disappearance of flight MH370? (2021)
this is mentioned in the article. there are things pointing to the contrary, mostly that the plane didn't shatter onto a million different pieces upon impact
return_to_monke··on OpenAI and Microsoft extend partnership
it seems to be constantly that way norwadays. I think they might give priority to paying API users, and of course by now there has been enough time for applications to implement chatgpt stuff.
return_to_monke··on If you like startups you should love anti-trust
Google buys your startup, and then shuts it down.
return_to_monke··on Bill Gates: I'm literally losing sleep over Java (1996)
I was also puzzled by this one. Does he mean Java applets maybe?
return_to_monke··on Megaface
I do respect artist's concerns. I have a hard time getting this one though. The ai learned that humans usually put squiggly lines in the corners, and it does, too. What is wrong with this?
return_to_monke··on Ask HN: Programs that saved you 100 hours? (2022 edition)
I very much agree with cheat.sh! I just do curl cheat.sh/X instead of X --help and then man X and then the search for "how to do y in X"
