retrochameleon··on FTC takes action against GoDaddy for alleged lax data security
They are also the worst hosting provider I have ever worked with, multiple times. Awful customer support and high prices. The only reason I work with them anymore is to migrate new customers to a different provider.
retrochameleon··on Walgreens replaced fridge doors with smart screens. It's now a $200M fiasco
I remember the first time ever seeing the screens was in the midst of covid, when some grocery stores were getting barer shelves. I thought the original purpose they wanted them for was to hide the empty shelves.
retrochameleon··on No Calls
I was in an email back and forth with someone that cold emailed us about a service. Sometimes, I say "what the hell" and take their pitch and see if it's actually worthwhile. But this guy, after I asked him some basic details about his service and what differentiates them, refused to answer my questions and insisted on getting on a call.

Nope, I'm not interested. If you can't give me basic info without wasting my time to get on a call about something I'm not sure I give a shit about yet, then I won't do it. You lose my business and my company's business by proxy. Marked as spam and moved on.

retrochameleon··on Spotify Shuts Down ‘Unwrapped’ Artist Royalty Calculator with Legal Threats
Wow. YT Music must be extremely bad if Spotify is comparatively amazing. There are so many UX and general usability issues that drive me crazy and crazier still that they have made essentially 0 improvements to the app UX in the last 5 years.

Other streaming services are unfortunately not an adequate replacement for myself, so I'm stuck with Spotify for now, unless I become determined to download my entire 8k+ library of songs for self-hosted options.

retrochameleon··on Ten Years of JMAP
Yes it did. Rereading and reediting snafu.
retrochameleon··on Show HN: Kando – A cross-platform pie menu for your desktop
Thank you for addressing the Electron discussion thoroughly on Github. I am always very disappointed to see an application I am interested in using Electron. It is often enough of an issue for me to immediately write it off as something I will never use. I hope to see more Tauri instead, but you also addressed some minor issues about that option.

I'll have to play around with this application.

Normally, email providers let you organize into folders. And IMAP (if I understand correctly) DOES NOT allow clients to see those folders and replicate the folder structure.

But Gmail doesn't have "folders". They have "labels". I wont go into all the details about how Gmail labels work that frustrate and annoy me, but the point is that IMAP clients cannot see labels, they can't replicate it on the client end, etc.

This caused a legitimate problem at work when the finance dept. wants to use this service that reads emails to automatically scan invoices into their system and whatnot. They wanted to be able to only have a subfolder automatically imported into the program, because too many of the emails were not relevant to get imported, creating more work to clear them out.

We were not able to achieve a solution with a simple folder for the users to move emails into to get them imported. Instead, we had to set up a second email account specifically for this importing service, and whenever finance wants something imported, they forward the email to that second account.

retrochameleon··on Conda: A package management disaster?
Does that mean I should consider using conda again over mamba? (It's nice to not be a black sheep, but conda's performance was embarrasingly abysmal)

Like others said, fighting the clean HOME fight is just draining and futile in the end. This script helps you identify low hanging fruit, though, where you can change their storage location with a simple envvar.

retrochameleon··on CADing and 3D printing like a software engineer
The visuals of the UI improved, I noticed that, but that's not a UX improvement. Overall UX is the biggest issue, which to me, feels just the same as always.

retrochameleon··on Mass psychogenic illness and the social network (2012)
Disorder has a clear clinical definition.
retrochameleon··on CADing and 3D printing like a software engineer
Workflows and UIs didn't really seem to change much to me, so I'd say the UX is still just as poor. I don't doubt they've made improvements under the hood and fixed bugs.
retrochameleon··on CADing and 3D printing like a software engineer
If your priority is to use open-source software, FreeCAD does the job. But I basically always recommend AGAINST it for anyone who asks me that I consider a more "normal" user. Normal in the way that they don't share my masochistic tendencies to spend all sorts of time and efforts getting open source tools to work, fighting through quirks, poor UX, bugs, etc...
retrochameleon··on A Beginner's Guide to Switches
I was hoping for a compendium of all the types of switches available for use in electronics. :(
retrochameleon··on FreeCAD 1.0
FreeCAD lacks polish and intuitive interfaces and controls. Using it in a business setting would most likely be an awful decision.

If anyone has experience with a "real" CAD program, and they try to use FreeCAD, they will lose their mind and wonder why anyone uses it at all. The reason to use it is it's open source and free. If that's what matters to you, you grit your teeth through the awful interface, learn its quirks, and learn just enough of the tools to do what you need to do.

retrochameleon··on Apple silently uploads your passwords and keeps them
No. Not without allowing me to configure what gets synced and what does not.
retrochameleon··on Bitwarden SDK relicensed from proprietary to GPLv3
The UX of Bitwarden is pretty lacking compared to 1Password. I finally made the switch after years of Bitwarden because of the vast UX improvements.

For one, it's much easier and natural to add additional pieces of information on entries in 1Password. Bitwarden's implementation of this always feels like a poorly integrated afterthought.

retrochameleon··on Smart TVs are like "a digital Trojan Horse" in people's homes
Thank you. I've been looking for a link to TVs that are still dumb.
retrochameleon··on Smart TVs are like "a digital Trojan Horse" in people's homes
It literally isn't good enough anymore. Smart TVs try to phone home in many ways. Thanks to things like Amazon Sidewalk, they can jump on that network for connectivity without your knowledge if it's available nearby.
retrochameleon··on 炊紙(kashikishi) is a text editor that utilizes GPU to edit text in a 3D space
I skipped around the video trying to see an example, but all I saw was 2D flat plane text.
retrochameleon··on Installing Arch Linux on a Laptop
No. There are distributions of Arch like EndeavourOS that provide an installer.
retrochameleon··on Why Not Comments
I resonate with that example. It's usually about a piece of code that didn't turn out the way you wanted to due to an issue. If there's a literal github issue or source I can link, I'll include the URL in case someone checks later and it's no longer a blocker.

Somethings I include brief explanations or links to a particular piece of hard-to-find documentation.

retrochameleon··on Flipper Zero Gets Major Firmware Update, Can Eavesdrop on Walkie-Talkies
The device is worthwhile if you are exploring this kind of hardware security and also want to poke at other things while you're on the go to enhance your learning. The fact they added a Javascript engine so you don't have to program in C/C++ when you want to run something custom, I think will be a huge boon.

Don't undervalue getting all these features in a purpose-built device with a purpose-built OS.

retrochameleon··on Study: Air purifier use at daycare centres cut kids' sick days by a third (2023)
https://youtu.be/gaQTYrisieA

This is an extremely well researched and presented video that exposes the fact that HEPA purifier marketing is a bit of a scam. The most important factor in air purifiers is not the filter but Clean Air Delivery Rate. You can only make a difference if you are moving air through the filters faster than particulate is introduced into the air.

I just returned a Medify filter because their advertised square footage is way higher than what the purifier should support based on the info in the video; it is inadequate. No idea how they are calculating their numbers - not to mention it's probably at the max speed setting - but it doesn't align with the sources from the video.

On top of that, smaller air purifiers must move air faster, be noisier, and the smallest sizes of particulate are captured most effectively at low velocities.

Use something like this to make a nicer version of a CR box: https://acinfinity.com/component-cooling/cabinet-fan-systems...

Or buy one of these: https://www.cleanairkits.com/

Those seem to be the best options that ACTUALLY work.

retrochameleon··on RioTerminal – Cross Platform Terminal in Rust
Besides being written in Rust, what advantages are there to me trying to adopt a terminal at version 0.1.0?

I won't be switching from Kitty to something not well-used and known to be stable.

retrochameleon··on Google's 'Reimagine' tool helped us add wrecks, disasters, and corpses to photos
It's going to be nearly impossible to validate wartime journalism now, and it's can easily be weaponized for misinformation.
retrochameleon··on Japan's Leader, Fumio Kishida, Will Step Down
Compare an age distribution chart from your country to Japan's and tell me it still seems the same.

Yes, old people are in power in other places too. I live in America. Japan is an extreme case, and the low porportion of younger voters excacerbates the disparity.
