repomies69··on Coinbase lays off around 1,100 employees
That must be incredibly tragic for him.
repomies69··on Coinbase lays off around 1,100 employees
On the other hand they could've been growing much more modestly, and then there wouldn't be any layoffs. Not much different to other IPOing companies, many are doing layoffs now. Crypto has little to do with it.
repomies69··on Coinbase lays off around 1,100 employees
In the end I care about the stock going up, and now it finally seems to be doing that. The point of a company is to generate wealth for the owners and nothing else. Employees need to negotiate with the contracts according to that.
repomies69··on Reselling Software: Don’t Start a SaaS – White Label Someone Else’s Instead
It sucks from employee perspective, but the thing that matters in the end is what you see under the bottom line. I'm pretty sure this is financially the most sensible option for many companies in certain niches. Doesn't mean it is necessarily nice thing to work with, which can be quite different thing.
repomies69··on Enough Is Enough: The Criminal Case Against Mark Zuckerberg
Looking at the examples, as far as I know many smaller companies get away with similar things as well, without getting charged. The problem is more that they are not big enough crimes to someone care enough. The customers and investors are pissed, but not enough pissed to go to court.
repomies69··on Tell HN: The loneliness of a pretty good developer
Change job.
repomies69··on The problem with Bitcoin miners
This article has really nothing to do with Bitcoin itself. It is just a story how stupid investors are pouring money to companies that have the Bitcoin in its name, without really going through the business at all.

These companies have been ridiculously lousy investments. Borderline scams, when you look at executive compensation.

repomies69··on Ethereum Has Issues
That sounds insance
repomies69··on Ask HN: Who operates at scale without containers?
Sometimes yes. But it is impossible to know for sure. New things still get adopted, some of those new things actually stick and provide value
repomies69··on Beautiful Technical Debt
> The thing with debt is, that you have to pay it back eventually - and you have to pay interest on top of that.

Bullshit. Typical startup fails. So, typically all the investments to reduce future technical debt is waste.

Engineering teams make often a huge issue about technical debt, sometimes in companies where it looks pretty clear that there is no much use in removing that technical debt since future investments in the company/technology seem unlikely. I guess in these situations the problem is that the leadership is not really eager to communicate the real situation to the devs.

repomies69··on The Drunk Men I Drive Around Every Night (2020)
Price is the most fair way to prioritize rides. $120 is a big amount of money for a ride, but not big enough to make you go bankcrupt. Valuable lesson learned, drink less next time and leave earlier before surge pricing.
repomies69··on Big tech makes a big bet: Offices are still the future
Nobody is ruining anything for anybody. Those who want to work remote, go work somewhere where they can work remote. If you don't want to work remote, you find an employer that offers premises. Either way no one forces you to choose employer that doesn't suit you.
repomies69··on Finality does not exist in payments
It is not "reversing the transaction", it is just seizure. If you have spent the Bitcoin on a lamborghini, government will confiscate the lambo. Criminals however typically spend the stolen money on hookers and drugs. Seizure or confiscation has nothing to do with "reversing the transaction", calling it that is just stupid, mixing terms unnecessarily is just unnecessary and confusing here.
repomies69··on Finality does not exist in payments
It depends on how well the fraud is executed, how long time has been passed since the fraud happened and also on the amounts and people/organisations involved.

Technically kalzumeus might be right, however practically it almost always makes sense to think that wire transfer is final, and treat it that way. If a con man tricks you into wiring funds to a wrong address, it is quite likely gone. However with credit card payments you can be more relaxed, and so on.

repomies69··on Binance is taking a $200M stake in Forbes
Gambling and unregistered securities are fundamentally very different things. Gambling is activity where usually house is guaranteed to win, and player is guaranteed to lose.

Unregistered securities are just securities, but not government approved. Generally it is believed that unregulated securities are way more risky. However also government approved securities can be scams or bad investments.

repomies69··on Feds arrest couple, seize $3.6B in hacked Bitcoin funds
> In reality, crypto's true purpose is a moving target, so it can never be criticized because that's not what crypto is really about.

Bitcoin is a tool. Like hammer or a shotgun. You can use it whatever way you want. There is no centrally defined "purpose".

repomies69··on Did I just lose half a million dollars?
It is immutable, unless in some cases it is not. However of majority of us plebs it is practically immutable.
repomies69··on Ask HN: Is it just me or do 99% of SWE jobs offers seem completely pointless?
Agree. Find hobbies, social circles outside of work etc. Work is just so that you can afford to live. I don't think having a "boring" work is a problem, as long as the work I do is ethical I don't care that much what I do for living.
repomies69··on Ask HN: Is it just me or do 99% of SWE jobs offers seem completely pointless?
> that almost every job out there is about squeezing more profit out of people, and absolutely nothing else

dude, where do you imagine the salaries come from?

repomies69··on I automated my job over a year ago and haven't told anyone
> This story is a pretty accurate fable for the pointlessness of the modern economy and its inability to provide real value to anyone.

Yeah absolute true man. In past times economy provided real value. Modern economy can't produce shit. No clean water, no medicine, no holidays... Nowadays life is just suffering and 100 years ago economy was providing real value all the time.

Anyway, can you pass the bong plz

repomies69··on It's time for an inequality index for cryptocurrencies distribution
Both cryptocurrencies and stocks are traded with leverage these days, and central banks control the price of leverage. So, if central banks decide to start raising interest rates, asset prices will go down because leveraging becomes more expensive.
repomies69··on Cryptoland [video]
Why not try your luck, some crypto ppl who have gotten recently rich might buy such shit.
repomies69··on Chatbots: Still dumb after all these years
The chatbot saves money. Simple as that. People get served by chatbots, get frustrated, and majority gives up and doesn't bother the company with the problem.

It doesn't really matter how the chatbot saves the money, they can just see the end results and use the money for bonuses instead.

repomies69··on Ask HN: Are most of us developers lying about how much work we do?
> It is a huge pay cut. I also am happier than I have ever been in my adult life because I'm learning something challenging and helping people instead of

While I congratulate your career move and I am very happy for you, I want to point out that there are tons of jobs in Software Development that genuinely help people and make society go forward.

repomies69··on Ray Tracing with POV-Ray: 25 scenes in 25 days (2013)
The point of povray is that you program the scenes. Maybe something like "25 days of blender python scenes" would be equivalent.
repomies69··on Approx. 24 hours ago, Tether printed 1B $USDT out of thin air
There are some other stablecoins, like USDC (about half the size of Tether. Why would Tether need to be closed down while USC not? Or do you think all of them should be shut down?

Tether is just an IOU note. I don't have problems with IOU notes, unless someone forces me to use them. Personally I haven't used tether and probably never will, however I don't have any problem if someone else wants to use it.

repomies69··on Crypto exchange BitMart confirms hack resulting in loss of $150M
I think hacking about any service will provide valuable data, which can be sold at darknet marketplaces. I read somewhere that there is a marketplace just for hacked server credentials as well.
repomies69··on Stripe hiring issues make some lose job offers
Yeah, the same, like I have been living in alternate universe throughout my career. For every business I have been, engineers have been treated very well. Typically the problem has been always recruiting developers, for all other roles people keep lining up. Leadership is not that stupid to drive them away.
repomies69··on Back end developers on hackathons are not needed
Business-driven hackathon doesn't bring joy. Better remove it from my life.
