replete··on Ask HN: What should I do with meet.hn?
Last night I went to a local tech event and met 4-5 other people who mentioned hacker news, none of which know about meethn or don't see the point because local events to your usual location are already organised by some benevolent person.

If you list socials on meet.hn, I assume it means you are pro-social and open to meeting up. I see it as being more useful if travelling, an excuse to reach out and meet new people in a new place.

1. RSS waning

2. Probably wouldn't use email

3. (don't care)

4. would be more practical as a simple browser addon (meetHN / country flag) or userscript (maybe there's a userscript to addon tool given it's probably a few lines of JS)

5. This idea could be more interesting if it added some kind of meshed chat or something - the community you have made from my perspective appears to be HN people who are pro-social and open to connection (whats the point otherwise). http://news.meet.hn could become a new default if it added more value than just some visibility of meetHN users - without aa value add to make it sticky it will fade away and be forgotten, an aside micro community makes this more interesting... but moderation... hmm, warnings, blacklist .. could become unmaintainable so the value-add has to be enough to warrant it

6. Not sure this would be useful as people near each other already have tech events and communities with moderation and organization apparatus facilitated by tech group organizer people and the moderation aspect would be more distributed?

The amount of signups suggests there's something here, I'm inclined to think more as a distributed group of people with a shared interest open to connection. Seems like a subcommunity type deal, and 5 makes the most sense to me, proxy site that adds enough value to warrant using it, layered subcommunity is a cool idea

This was a problem with pi4, is it seriously still an issue with pi5?
replete··on <dialog>: The Dialog Element
Surprised by the downvotes to be honest, it's relevant. It's okay, I hate cookie popups also.
replete··on <dialog>: The Dialog Element
I was unfortunately looking for a cookie consent manager for a new build I'd just optimized, and didn't like that the open source options were 100KB+ so I made my own [0] and relied on <dialog> to support my goal of writing it as small as possible. With a couple of CSS rules, it works natively without styles. I also ended up writing some build tools to compile all the way down to IE11 and some really ancient browser versions.

Dialog works well for the most part, with a couple of CSS kludges here and there for the older browsers but otherwise straightforward to deal with. It's a decent addition to the web platform, but after 20 years of this I would like to stop making custom multi select controls every couple of years. Native controls good.

This is true. It's basically GrapheneOS or DivestOS as best options.

replete··on Using an 8K TV as a Monitor
I recently acquired a 43" 4K monitor for programming - a very boring Philips monitor, used at 100% scale. I hated it at first, but after a month I loved it.

2160p actual 'workspace' resolution at this distance (2 feet?) and size (43") seems close to a practical limit for typical use I thought, requiring with this measly 43" still a little bit of occasional head movement to see the top right corner. I noticed a tendency to sit slightly to the left of centre on this monitor, to avoid distortion and maintain clarity with what I'm focusing on (e.g. code/windows, not reference materials). Because of this I suspect at this distance a 43" with a slight curve would be optimal, at least for me.

What I wanted to ask you:

- What is your 'workspace' resolution? Is it something like 6K? I'm guessing your scaling is either 125% or 150%? Your PPI should be around 135, mine 102.

- Are you actually sat perfectly centre? I was wondering this because I keep noticing I tend to gradually shift my keyboard to the left over a day. Maybe this is years of 1440p + side portrait monitor use, I'm not sure, but eventually I accepted that I prefer slightly to the left (odd because my side portrait was on the left...)

- Do you think a curved monitor at this size/distance would improve the ergonomics? I imagine you must get a bit of a neck workout.

After getting this monitor, I'm pretty much sold on single screens again - but I had to switch my window management from keyboard-based tiling shortcuts to 'hold CTRL and move mouse' window management (BetterTouchTool on MacOS), with a tendency to stack up windows messily. I tried custom resize snap zones with BetterSnapTool - but I don't use them. I think that was the biggest challenge to switch from multi monitor to large format. It's a huge benefit to have everything in your context on one screen, but had to rethink how windows get moved around. Now I'm used to it, I want CTRL/SHIFT + mousemove modifiers on every system to deal with windows.

Also related, I bought a 4K tv last weekend for another system to use as a monitor, but found that the gaps between the pixels were unexpectedly large, creating a strange optical effect at close distance, making it unusable (but so close). There might be something different about the screen outer layer (on most TVs?) that polarizes light in a way better suited for distance viewing, but clearly not all TVs have this issue.

How common is this? I've used for years and haven't encountered plugins breaking on me.

VSCodium is VSCode without the Microsoft EULA and extra stuff. Most extensions are available in the app, others through openvsx.org

I personally think that the best alternative is statamic. I've built two large sites with it without touching a line of PHP. No themes or crazy plugin dependencies in the manner of Wordpress, so its a roll everything yourself type deal, but the data model building GUI is excellent. Not super interested in selling/explaining it, but certainly I would look into it as a viable alternative - it works how I think CMS's should work, incredibly refreshing after building websites for 20 odd years.

Did you upgrade to Sequoia?
replete··on Apple's new macOS Sequoia update is breaking some cybersecurity tools
That's the trick for stability on MacOS, wait a few versions after a major. Done this for a few years now and I have had no problems. When they change OS APIs, it happens on a major point zero release. Another good reason to wait is many apps aren't ready in time for the changes. I'll install a point 2 or a point 3 if it looks like a good release, but it looks like this isn't one of them. My pro tip for finding out whether its a good upgrade or not is the macrumors article comments, I'll scan through and see what people are saying about the update.
replete··on Apple's new macOS Sequoia update is breaking some cybersecurity tools
I usually wait for a .4 update before upgrading. One time around Catalina there was a bug that broke USB-C docks.. Oh cool none of my devices work.

Interestingly in that thread, 'Intel' is not mentioned once.

replete··on Apple's new macOS Sequoia update is breaking some cybersecurity tools
There's a bug megatread on r/macos full of networking bugs that makes it clear that upgrading to sequoia is not a good idea just yet.

I've used it on a few projects successfully. The property ordering thing mentioned in other comments though is good to be aware of. It's not difficult to switch out for css nano if that is the case. The important feature for me was being able to target a browserlist string and flatten CSS nesting

replete··on Using Android Without a Google Account
Good table. The device support for DivestOS will improve with device/cash donations, its basically a one-man project. SZ compiles all the monthly builds on his own machines, its quite an undertaking.

From what I understand there's been a fair amount of drama in the de-googled OS space.

My experience with DOS has been exceptional and I'd encourage anyone who uses it to donate towards SZs ongoing efforts. It's pretty amazing what he's achieved on mostly his own.

replete··on Using Android Without a Google Account
I'm surprised not so many people know about DivestOS[0]. It's the best option IMO if you don't have a google pixel for grapheneOS. Has similar support to lineageOS which it is based on. Same developer made Mulch and Mull web browsers. Monthly security updates. Obviously none of the hardware security features grapheneOS offers, but many other features, binary deblobbing, private DNS, MAC randomization etc.

Also, if you're handset model supports relocking, you can use banking apps etc.
