repler··on We Don't Have a Talent Shortage. We Have a Sucker Shortage
No offense, but that's pretty sad. I hope you find more rewarding work before you retire. We're only on this Earth once.
repler··on We Don't Have a Talent Shortage. We Have a Sucker Shortage
I ask candidates to tell me about something they created they are proud of, and why.

All you have to do after that is listen.

repler··on Loop invariants can give you coding superpowers
You're not missing anything - it's 100/200 level computer science. (Freshman/Sophomore)
repler··on Apple announces Apple Card credit card
You can actually do it now if you have a bank account on each end of the transaction, and it's in real time (not ACH): https://www.theclearinghouse.org/payment-systems/rtp
repler··on COI – Chat Over IMAP
And all email is is two people sending telegraphs really quickly to each other....
repler··on Toyotas and Chevys Are Holding Up Better Than Most Luxury Brands
> I would not purchase a 2019 anything right now. I'd allow for two-three years worth of flashes before considering a new car

Do you mean a model that is all new for 2019 or do you mean literally any car assembled in 2019?

repler··on Are we alone? Tiny spacecraft will head to Alpha Centauri to find out
I don't recall there being any exoplanets within the habitable zone at Alpha Centauri.
repler··on When Security Compromises Security – The Caesars/Defcon debacle
Agreed, but also - it's private property and most likely a contract was signed at hotel checkin that permitted it legally.
repler··on Uber Self-Driving Car That Struck Pedestrian Wasn’t Set to Stop in an Emergency
Yeah mine does that too. I wish they had a sensitivity option like they do with the forward collision sensors.

Hey there's an idea for Uber, maybe instead of disabling the forward collision system entirely they could just decrease the sensitivity to lessen false positives (like in our Jeeps)?

repler··on Ask HN: Alternatives to Reddit?
Ctrl-F "digg", no results. LOL. rip
repler··on Things Many People Find Too Obvious to Have Told You Already
Yeah, if you're an employee you might care about things like that but some people do consulting, you know.

I would add: some organizations make fistfuls of cash and don't have much in the way of a technology team. Others pump billions of dollars through Excel macros. Not every company has a great IT team following all the latest buzzwords.

repler··on Things Many People Find Too Obvious to Have Told You Already
I wouldn't dream of speaking for Patrick but I believe it's something along the lines of:

unreasonable deadlines, non-existent documentation for existing systems, non-existent QA processes, unavailable/non-existent support staff, undocumented/unclear requirements, etc.

repler··on $300m in cryptocurrency' accidentally lost forever due to bug
Hey - thanks! Kind of amazed to watch all my karma evaporate for pointing it out. :/
repler··on $300m in cryptocurrency' accidentally lost forever due to bug
The point stands that it is not "lost forever".

When you invest in the stock market, and the market crashes, THAT money is lost forever. This is not that.

repler··on $300m in cryptocurrency' accidentally lost forever due to bug
so ... not "lost forever", then?
repler··on $300m in cryptocurrency' accidentally lost forever due to bug
The title makes it sound like people lost their money.
repler··on $300m in cryptocurrency' accidentally lost forever due to bug
It is not "lost forever": https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=15644454

They can do a hard fork and this money will re-appear.

repler··on A Pre-History of Slashdot
This is awesome!! Thank you!

Hey - it's a little hard to see the splits like foe of a friend (I'm red/green color blind), what's an easy way to tweak the colors?

EDIT: I unpacked it and tweaked the CSS. Wooo!

repler··on Nest launches an outdoor security camera
The quality is fantastic, very sharp. We can also HEAR everything that happens on our street through the microphone. I can't really understand a bad review. It dutifully does its job without hassles, and is super convenient to use.
repler··on A 220b spreadsheet app in HTML/JS
And you didn't need a dozen node.js modules!! Amazing!!
repler··on Nest launches an outdoor security camera
That's why the Kuna camera is still a better option - it sits at the bottom of a very nice outdoor light fixture.

I'll stick with my Kuna cameras. It has a very nice app, face detection, etc.

repler··on Apple Is Trying to Make iMessages More Private
Why is Vice so excited to write this article, with this headline, and then provide absolutely no details:

> It's unclear exactly how Apple is able to pull this off, as there's no explanation of how this works other than from those words by Federighi.

All Apple says is "end to end encryption". From your phone to the cloud is 2 ends, and then from the cloud to the FBI is 2 more. Yay!

repler··on The Wonderful WiFi232: BBSing Has Never Been Easier
It's definitely possible to add a small piezo speaker to the board and have it play a recording of the sound to you when you open a new telnet connection ;)
repler··on Ask HN: What're the best-designed things you've ever used?
Whoa, thank you for the tip! Those do look very nice :D
repler··on Ask HN: What're the best-designed things you've ever used?
I believe you mean "bistro style" mugs and I emphatically agree.
repler··on Newest MacBook Pro is the first MacBook not recommended by Consumer Reports
I dunno man, my eyes glazed over somewhere in the middle of that third paragraph and I'm just happy I don't have to deal with any of that.

Think they'll wise up and change any of it on the next model?

repler··on 'Clean your desk': My Amazon interview experience
Amazon is truly awful at hiring. Their engineers often give strange programming puzzles to solve, then add arbitrary constraints like, "this needs to operate in 16MB of RAM".

If Amazon can't spring for a $15 stick of memory it's probably not going to be a great work experience.

I also wouldn't want to work with engineer who asked BS questions like that. Waste of time.

repler··on I'm giving up on PGP
Great - how do I get a non-compromised smartphone? :/

I'm kidding but I'm also serious.

repler··on Shame on Y Combinator
I don't disagree with you, man, but you also have to realize this wound never fully healed after our Civil War ended in 1865.

You look at a map of the "red states" and they are very much what is remaining of the Confederate States of America. The red states in the west are where these racist losers fled to after the war to get away from all the freed blacks.

The fact that Trump is calling the election "rigged" and essentially egging on an armed rebellion after election day - well that just might happen because it already did a very long time ago.

repler··on Why Your Excellent Conference Talk Was Rejected
I know you weren't replying to me but I've never seen it. I also would never condone that kind of behavior, or even be associated with people who did that.

Someone actually flagged my comment, which to me is pretty jaw dropping. This isn't a topic we can discuss? Okay.
