Mastodon isn't a brand so much as it's a grouping of a bunch of different brands (servers). In a way Mastodon can't win or lose because of this. If you have 10 people on a server and they're happy- you've won.
Gruber has a hard time wrapping his head around this, partially because it's just not his thing.
I've seen people go and "work" for decades in an office and do nothing all day. There's nothing new under the sun.
The problem is more that HN is perceived, with good reason, to be transphobic, and Asahi has several trans developers. This is also the reason why a couple of other people I won't mention don't want HN to link to their projects either, because for every link, several people will bitch in the comments about the validity of their gender and pronouns. (As if creating a web app somehow makes one an authority in biology.)
I mean, obviously, it's not like everybody who comments here takes part in the abuse, but when you spend every damn day of your life seeing it and depending on where you live, possibly being harassed by the government over it too, HN turns out to be one more place where you simply can't have any peace.
(And honestly, even if Lina is a anime alter ego, which you haven't proven, and only suspect, why the fuck do you care? Don't you have something better to spend your time on?)
Throw wads of cash on the table. There will be no "shortage."
Moderation is also way better on Mastodon, so even with those features, the impact should be lessened.
My point was more that there's no real profit motive to Mastodon, so it can't fail in that sense, which is generally what we're talking about when we're talking about web services.
If 75% of the new people on Mastodon eventually go to BlueSky, the people who remain will probably be perfectly happy to remain on Mastodon, and I don't know how one can call that a failure.
It has already succeeded at being a decent social network for people for whom Twitter was too toxic.
When Dave's is the only place to go, there's no pressure to keep the prices down.
If approximately half of the population is at all afraid to exist in public, then maybe your feelings getting hurt about sweeping statements is a little less important in the grand scheme of things.
It's called empathy, look it up if you need to.
