renchap··on More details about mitigations for the CPU Speculative Execution issue
> In our own testing, we have found that microbenchmarks can show an exaggerated impact.

This. The talks about 30% (or even 300%!) impact based on a graph without any details or methodology, often itself based on a microbenchmark or a tweet that got viral is really not helping.

I am very interested about publishing ES6+ code. https://philipwalton.com/articles/deploying-es2015-code-in-p... was very inspirational on this topic, but the fact that 99% of the libraries I use are publishing transpiled code (+ polyfill) is a big disappointment.

From what I understood, there is currently nothing to allow both ES5 and ES6 code to be published and let the bundler choose which one to include. Any ideas on how to change this?

Webpacker is not about React, but about using a modern asset bundler (Webpack) and ease modern JS development for Rails users (Babel, …). There is a generator to easily setup React, Vue and some major JS frameworks, but those are very basic and optional.

renchap··on Ask HN: Why are supercomputers all running Linux and not BSD?
FreeBSD does support Infiniband: https://wiki.freebsd.org/InfiniBand

This page mentions that Mellanox has provided work on this. Also storage vendors uses external infiniband stacks on FreeBSD for many years (I got my first Isilon cluster something like 8 years ago, and it was using an IB backend, with a forked FreeBSD 7 kernel iirc) and are stable and widely deployed.

renchap··on C14 – Cheap, secure long term cloud storage
Nope, with Backblaze you have instant access to an individual file. Here you need to unarchive your safe, which can take up to a few hours (depending on the size of the vault), and only then you have access to the content of the safe. No way to retrieve only 1 file, or have instant access.
renchap··on C14 – Cheap, secure long term cloud storage
With C14 you create a "safe", you upload your data, and once done (or after 7 days), they archive your safe. To retrieve data, you need to ask for the safe to be unarchived and you get access back to your data, for 7 days.
renchap··on C14 – Cheap, secure long term cloud storage
From what they explained on IRC, this is home-made hardware (not yes disclosed because of pending patent), low-level storage without a filesystem. They split the"safe" in chunks, encrypt it, calculate parity blocs, and store them all on a different hardware. They intend to disclose the software "soon", and the hardware later.
