rem7··on Ask HN: Are you programming on your holidays?
All work and no programming makes me a dull boy
rem7··on AWS-Shell – An Integrated Shell for Working with the AWS CLI
that's awesome! awscli commands can get so long, the auto-completion should really help
rem7··on Everything Apple Introduced This Year Kinda Sucked
I won a Pebble Time Steel at work, but decided not to keep it since I already have the iWatch. It'll be a Christmas gift.

A co-worker has the LG G Watch R. I really like the look of it, but I haven't used it. I was really hoping the native apps would speed up. I'm not sure if the Hue Lights app is native but, without exaggerating, it takes more than 30 seconds or longer to open the app on the watch, and sometimes it just doesn't open at all. It's faster to take out my phone and use the widget.

rem7··on Everything Apple Introduced This Year Kinda Sucked
I think they could have saved a lot of bad reviews by just including this with the laptop. They're already pricey laptops as it is...
rem7··on This Animated Data Visualization of World War 2 Fatalities Is Shocking
I knew Russia lost a lot of people, but I didn't know the difference compared with other countries was so drastic including military and civilians.
rem7··on Everything Apple Introduced This Year Kinda Sucked
I actually really like my macbook. Plugging in a USB or anything else rarely happens so I don't care too much about the lack of a standard USB port.

The iWatch on the other hand, I'm disappointed. Mainly because its slow. I really wanted to be able to turn on/off my hue lights with it but it takes forever to launch the app. It's faster if I use my phone.

rem7··on Ted Cruz's H1-B Reform Bill to Require $110K Minimum Salary
I wonder what percentage of H1-B holders make >= 110k. All the people I know who aren't in the tech industry and have H1-B don't make anywhere near that... That's one way to deal with the cap.

Eliminating OPT is going to make getting an H1-B visa harder too, that's how foreign students get experience and can get closer to making the 110k... No one is going to hire an inexperienced student and pay them 110k+ right away. Obama once said something along the lines of: "We're giving foreigners the best education and then we send them back home..." that isn't beneficial to anyone.

rem7··on U.S. states pass laws backing Uber's view of drivers as contractors
If I remember correctly, wasn't one of the main reasons they weren't considered contractors is because they don't set their rates? How would this affect other industries... Like the tech industry... I mean I guess the contractor can always just say no if they don't like the rate being set.
rem7··on Advice needed, Mid-Life crisis
I would vote for option #2. I was in a similar position (not in India though). The reason why I chose 2 is because fixing my financial situation would be a priority. There is a great feeling to know you don't owe anything and you're free in that regard. Last thing I would want is to start a business of my own with debt still around.
rem7··on Construction approved for world's most powerful digital camera
I hope they also approved the construction of the supercomputer to work on the images!
rem7··on New hydrogen cellphone battery can power an iPhone for a week
Also I assume the recharge is pretty much instantaneous? Just re-fill it with hydrogen and you get another 7 days... That'd be pretty sweet
rem7··on I took the $300k (2013)
- "Otherwise forget the extra hours, live a balanced life, play with your kids, love your /(boy|girl)friend/ or spouse."

Couldn't agree more. I've done startups and learnt a lot, they got me to where I am today. Now I've found a corporate place that doesn't take away from my personal life. Couldn't be happier.

rem7··on Streaming Music is Ripping You Off; Fight back with this simple hack
If you want to support your artists, go see them live. Not only you will be more happy about it, they will too, and they'll make money that way.
rem7··on Dataflow Programming for Clojure with Pulsar
Clojure keeps getting all these cool features. I remember when I first found about channels in clojure and I got really excited. Just makes me want to go back and keep playing with it hoping some day I'll use it for something in production.
rem7··on Fun with time travel: retroactive data structures in Python
why don't you guys stop stalking github.com/csvoss already? Third post of the day: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10117612 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10114969
rem7··on GitHub had connectivity problems
Someone doesn't wanna work today.
rem7··on How to Uninstall Windows 10 and Downgrade to Windows 7 or 8.1
You had me at "uninstall windows"
rem7··on Jungle – Simple CLI for AWS operations
As most people have already said awscli is awesome and very complete; and I like awscli. The commands can get pretty long and when you have to look at the help doc every time to see what arguments you're missing it can get tedious. So Thanks for creating this!
rem7··on GCC is moving to git
Will they keep the repo in GitHub? :)
rem7··on Spotify's new privacy policy angers users
I was never a big fan of spotify since it required a Facebook account to use it. A regular email sign up process would have been enough. So I went with rhapsody.
rem7··on Go 1.5 is released
agreed. That's the main reason I'm upgrading.
rem7··on Why One Programmer Doesn’t Do DevOps Anymore
yeah, CTO should be doing devops...
rem7··on Redis cluster, no longer vaporware
If I remember correctly they only have read replicas. I don't think they even have proper Fail over. You manually have to promote one of the read replicas to master... Feel free to correct me :)
rem7··on Why Walking Helps Us Think
Or just jump in the shower if I'm too lazy to walk
rem7··on Goop – Dependency Manager for Go
I also setup my path per project. And vendor all my deps under _vendor And for getting libraries instead of doing go get I use git subtrees like so:

git subtree add --prefix _vendor/src/github.com/crowdmob/goamz https://github.com/crowdmob/goamz.git master --squash

rem7··on Golang 1.4 Internal Packages
GOPATH drives me crazy. I'm the only one of my co-workers really pushing for golang, but all have said that until GOPATH, dependencies, and versioning get 'fixed' they won't even bother with it.
rem7··on Golang 1.4 Internal Packages
The fact that we are comparing all of this with java makes me so sad.
rem7··on Netflix replies to Verizon cease and desist letter
It should also include the support number for the ISPs number... you know, keep it handy just in case the user wants to call and complain.
rem7··on Apple has lost their legal claim to the iPhone name in Mexico
...in the US. Mexico didn't get iPods that year. Mexico didn't even get the first version of the iPhone when it came out. You had to buy it in the US and unlock it. I think the first iPhone legally available in Mexico was the 3G.
rem7··on Apple told to rewrite "Samsung didn't copy", post on front page until Dec 14th
What makes apple what it is is the costumers, in essence the "branding strategy". The person holding the iPhone, they could care less about the rest.
