relyks··on IRS Expected to Lay Off Thousands
Don't count on me for being one of those people. I didn't vote for the current administration :)
relyks··on IRS Expected to Lay Off Thousands
Yeah, this makes "perfect sense." The IRS is the primary federal agency that generates net revenue with a positive return on every dollar invested. When the IRS receives more funding, it typically enhances tax enforcement efforts and increases the total revenue collected. It doesn't seem logical for DOGE to reduce staff when those employees contribute more revenue than they cost, resulting in a positive return on investment.

Unless they believe it's possible to maintain the same revenue collection with fewer people through increased automation, what are their motives? Laying off probationary employees still developing critical skills undercuts the IRS's long-term revenue goals. Increasing the performance standards for probation rather than terminating these new hires would help build a more effective workforce that generates more significant revenue. IMO, Elon and friends are just trying to reduce future tax enforcement and get away with more

Why wouldn't it be? OpenAI and Anthropic keep everyone's prompts and use them for training too
relyks··on Federal employees told to remove pronouns from email signatures by end of day
This is actually dumb. I go by he/him pronouns and I put them in my signature, because my first name is gender-neutral. I find it annoying when people assume I'm female over email correspondence. Not considering people with different genders or who have a desire to use different pronouns, I'm sure there are other people like me in the federal government. What's next? They'll tell people they need to change their name to match their assigned birth gender?
relyks··on New Tesla Model Y
Why? Besides not supporting Elon Musk, I have found the driving and handling on BMW's electric cars to be significantly better than Teslas
relyks··on Google.com search now refusing to search for FF esr 128 without JavaScript
Maybe try changing the user agent? I can use Google on my Kindle's web browser and that can barely handle Javascript (though the Kindle does do limited execution)

You don't typically pay for a PhD. You're accepted into a program and the schools pays for you, sometimes even with a stipend to help with living costs
relyks··on Joco almost died at launch. Now, it's a lifeline for e-bike delivery riders
This is not true. The article you linked only mentioned one particular instance that the battery fire was not the result of a e-bike battery. There have been fires due to bad e-bike batteries (see https://www.thecity.nyc/2022/11/21/ebikes-fires-lithium-ion-..., and https://www.thecity.nyc/2024/01/31/ebike-battery-fire-hazard...).

I'm a huge pedal assist e-bike fan and I use my e-bike all the time around NYC. Throttle based e-bikes used to be technically illegal in NYC until 2020 (pedal assist were not), which is what all the delivery workers still continue to use. (https://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/bicyclists/ebikes.shtml). Do you have a citation that they continue to confiscate e-bikes?

relyks··on Skype Credit is no longer available
It's definitely still one of the best consumer VoIP solutions and I've found that video/audio calls still work really well, better than other apps
relyks··on Skype Credit is no longer available
I hope they refund people or still allow people to use their existing credit... I use Skype to get a virtual number so I can call places in England from the U.S. before I visit there and so I can continue to use the same number while I'm in England :)
relyks··on Casio to Release Ring Watch
Yeah, but I'd say it's more of a fashion statement
relyks··on Pidgin 3.0.0 Experimental 1 Announcement
Am I reading this right? Is the only protocol being supported now the most recent version of IRC? Are there plans for others? Part of Pidgin's "calling card" has been its ability to support many different chat protocols. However, that's become difficult since most protocols have become walled gardens and harder to reverse engineer. I'd imagine supporting Matrix, XMPP, Signal, other protocols with open specifications, etc. would be a good idea
relyks··on Niantic plans a “Large Geospatial Model” trained on Pokémon Go player data
I'm pretty sure most of the data is not coming from the AR features. There are tasks in the game to actually "scan" locations. Most people I know who play also play the game without the AR features turned on unless there's an incentive.
relyks··on Niantic announces “Large Geospatial Model” trained on Pokémon Go player data
Google actually has released weights for some of their models, but judging by the fact that this model is potentially valuable, they likely will not allow Niantic for this
relyks··on Niantic announces “Large Geospatial Model” trained on Pokémon Go player data
Lol, do you really think that? I did it from having a desire to contribute to the conversation and I was aware that that would be a future possibility :) I'm not really getting much in return or being incentivized by Y combinator
relyks··on Niantic announces “Large Geospatial Model” trained on Pokémon Go player data
They definitely had this as a long-term vision
relyks··on Niantic plans a “Large Geospatial Model” trained on Pokémon Go player data
This is pretty cool, but I feel as a pokehunter (Pokemon Go player), I have been tricked into working to contribute training data so that they can profit off my labor. How? They consistently incentivize you to scan pokestops (physical locations) through "research tasks" and give you some useful items as rewards. The effort is usually much more significant than what you get in return, so I have stopped doing it. It's not very convenient to take a video around the object or location in question. If they release the model and weights, though, I will feel I contributed to the greater good.
relyks··on Woman, 82, still rides same bike she was given at 13
Yeah, I found buying one, though it was very expensive, to be worth it, because I started getting a lot more exercise than I would have without it. I don’t need to carry cargo or passengers very often :)
relyks··on Woman, 82, still rides same bike she was given at 13
I was actually referring to regular bikes not e-bikes in my last point, your quote, but I agree with everything you said. There are definitely disadvantages to e-bikes
relyks··on Woman, 82, still rides same bike she was given at 13
No, for enjoyment, parking convenience, traffic avoidance, cost, and to be environment friendly :)

Cycling is actually the fastest way to get around NYC and London most of the time if you’re able to keep a consistently high speed

relyks··on Woman, 82, still rides same bike she was given at 13
Actually, studies (e.g. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S259019821...) have shown that people who use e-bikes (pedal assist not throttle) tend to be more physically fit and active than ones who just use regular bikes.

I have an e-bike and it’s enabled me to cycle on steep inclined and hilly roads that I would be unable to do otherwise. Having an e-bike encourages you to cycle a lot more than you typically would imo. I use it as my primary form of transportation.

I’m just surprised that people continue to use old bikes when the newer technology around them has continued to improve.

relyks··on The brain simulates actions and their consequences during REM sleep
I wonder if this can apply to humans for situations that either resolve conflict or to anticipate future events more effectively? People are known to process traumatic memories from the past during REM sleep by essentially reliving the experience and they're known to work through potential future events e.g. business executives have simulated meetings in their dreams for ones they anticipate to happen soon in the future.
relyks··on Can a product with "0g sugar" contain lactose?
As someone who is also severely lactose intolerant, this is something you figure out through trial and error (or I should really say trial and extreme digestive system upset). Unless the food product is clear with mentioning "no lactose", you can only trust that product will contain a "minimum upper bounds of 500 milligrams of lactose per serving for products labeled “0g sugar”" and it could have that much as the author says.

I basically take lactase enzyme pills everytime I have a dairy product. Better to be safe than sorry

relyks··on Bangladesh police given 'shoot-on-sight' orders amid national curfew
Shutting down trade will make life worse for Bangladeshis (and complications for apparel companies here). Textiles and garments are huge exports for Bangladesh and those industries employ many, many people there. I'm also of the opinion that the people of a country should be considered separate from its government and military (which may not have support from its people and be corrupt)
