> This excuse is hollow to me. In an organization of this size, it takes multiple people screwing up for a failure to reach the public, or at least it should.

Only if this is considered a failure.

Native English speakers may not know, but for a very long time (since before automatic translation tools became adequate) pretty much all MSFT docs were machine translated to the user agent language by default. Initially they were as useless as they were hilarious - a true slop before the term was invented.

reisse··on Bitcoin tumbles below $70K, heavy losses in cryptocurrencies in last three weeks
It's expected for Tether to print when the crypto market cap is growing, because most crypto trades in USDT. So you cannot reliably say what is the cause and what is the consequence here.

Then, if the price was pumped and the liquidity didn't match it, it'd be a perfect target to squeeze (because the market is so highly leveraged), at least one trading firm should've attempted it.

reisse··on xAI joins SpaceX
> If elon were working for me, I would have fired him for having never delivered on any of his projects.

Never? For the sheer amount of moonshot bets he's doing, his track record would make any VC jealous. Zip2, PayPal, Tesla, SpaceX, Grok/xAI.

reisse··on Heathrow scraps liquid container limit
This is somewhat false? There were four other bombings, two in western countries (specifically EU->US flights). None of these two were successful in terms of "the plane was downed", but bombs were carried on a plane and exploded, and security didn't stop that.

22 December 2001, American Airlines Flight 63 7 May 2002, China Northern Flight 6136 25 December 2009, Northwest Airlines Flight 253 2 February 2016, Daallo Airlines Flight 159

reisse··on There's a ridiculous amount of tech in a disposable vape
Some of them (actually most of them where I live) are rechargeable, they're not refillable and you can't change the atomizer (wick and coil). And the most expensive part of the vape is the tax on nicotine liquid, so there is little sense to hassle with wicks and refills.
reisse··on Linux is good now
VRR is necessary to avoid tearing or FPS caps (V-sync) when your hardware cannot stably output FPS count matching the screen refresh rate.

The thing about Macbooks is people tend to compare them with all of the regular laptops, of which 95% are in entirely another market segment. Even worse, some regular laptops can vary from "cheap shit" to "good machine" under one name, depending on the options selection (looking at you Lenovo). Hats off to Apple, having very narrow selection of models with very limited customization options helps them greatly.

There are models from Dell, Lenovo, and ASUS which have better screens than Macs, better design and build quality (subjectively), on-par performance and just slightly worse battery life. It just takes time and effort to find them.

(also, am I the only one who finds Apple trackpads _uncomfortable_ to touch?)

reisse··on Cloudflare Radar 2025 Year in Review
Hah, AS16509 beats every other AS in bot traffic by a huge margin. I wonder if at least half of it is due to the major crypto exchanges hosted in AWS Tokyo behind Cloudflare.

From Wiki:

Illegal border crossing is absolutely not bureaucratic BS in any country.

reisse··on When a video codec wins an Emmy
It's all about hardware support really. AV1 is pretty new (2018), give it some time. E. g. Nvidia supports decoding since 3xxx generation, and encoding only since 4xxx generation.

I still vividly remember what a clusterfk was H264 support on mobile devices just ten years ago, circa 2010-2015. AVC spec was published in 2003, High Profiles standardised in 2005, universally supported only since ~2015. I personally had a 2011 Tegra 2 tablet which did support H264, but didn't support high profiles.

reisse··on Testing shows automotive glassbreakers can't break modern automotive glass
I think mock slide deployment could be made much cheaper than 30k - e. g. high-volume compressors can be used instead of gas canisters, the materials can be cheaper because there is no weight or temperature requirements, etc.
reisse··on Electric vehicle sales are booming in South America – without Tesla
I thought Toyota is doing quite well in emerging markets? However they skipped a lot of EV craziness and just do cheap-and-reliable ICE cars.

I also never understood why established brands lobbied for EVs, and not against them. They clearly had no edge over Tesla and Chinese brands, why compete on rival's field?

reisse··on Google tells employees it must double capacity every 6 months to meet AI demand
I strongly believe it is _the_ next big thing.

The easiest way to tell why is that every high schooler or university student is using LLMs (whether it is a good thing or not is irrelevant). These people will go to the job market in a few years and carry the habit.

reisse··on Gaming on Linux has never been more approachable
New user choosing operating system has most likely just bought a new laptop or PC. Especially for laptops, Arch (or anything rolling with latest kernel) _is_ the best choice, because of drivers.

reisse··on Cloudflare tells U.S. govt that foreign site blocking efforts are trade barriers
For God's sake, Cloudflare is the last effin company to speak about site blocking. I can only quote myself from https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=45059003 :

> In my opinion, Cloudflare does a lot more censoring than all state actors combined, because they singlehandedly decide if the IP you use is "trustworthy" or "not", and if they decided it is not, you're cut off from like half of the Internet, and the only thing you can do is to look for another one. I'd really like if their engineers understood what Orwellian mammoth have they created and resign, but for now they're only bragging without the realization. Or at least if any sane antitrust or comms agency shred their business in pieces.

reisse··on You can't cURL a Border
> You should not be counting days or nights because you should not let yourself be in the country anywhere near the expiry of a visa.

You're privileged if you're able to do so. In many occasions people have single-entry visas with one day leeway from tickets submitted to the consulate.

reisse··on You can't cURL a Border
Ah, the classic programmer's mistake of treating complicated human interaction systems as a computer programs.

There is no State Almighty judging you to the last dot of absurdly complicated rules (well, in 99.99% cases when you don't actively look for trouble). Like, if you overstayed Schengen visa for one day because you messed up with counting entry and exit days, but used it otherwise for its intended purpose, the border officer likely won't even notice. Or for tax residence, a lot of countries I know just take what you say about your trips at face value - especially when there is no way to check it.

Just relax. If you don't know how to count your days in Morocco because they changed the time zone in an inconvenient moment, the officer evaluating your documents doesn't know that too. It's truth and best effort that counts.

From the other point of view, the abundance of stories when the high-profile criminal was catched doing something stupid, and the relative absence of ones when the criminal was catched in some clever way may mean the law enforcement is doing their job poorly.
reisse··on Windows 11 25H2 October Update Bug Renders Recovery Environment Unusable
Not "more", but they're on the same level. I was hit with recovery bug today on my Windows desktop, and with totally fubar-d Gnome 49.1 release on Arch laptop just yesterday :/
reisse··on Ask HN: How to stop an AWS bot sending 2B requests/month?
On the other hand, I've only seen complaint letters from AWS for doing tens of thousands of RPS on rate-limited endpoints for multiple days. Even then, AWS wasn't the initiator of inquiry (it was their customer being polled), and it wasn't a "cease and desist" kind of letter, it was "please explain what you're doing and prove you're not violating our ToS".
reisse··on Ask HN: How to stop an AWS bot sending 2B requests/month?
What kind of content do you serve? 700 RPS is not a big number at all, for sure not enough to qualify as a DoS. I'm not surprised AWS did not take any action.
reisse··on Sometimes CPU cores are odd
Wait, but there is an asymmetry. Legitimate user spends at least a dozen seconds on a page, they don't care about 10ms overhead. For a scraper, however, 10ms overhead can easily be 10x the time it spends on a page overall - the scraper is now ten times slower.

However the exact PoW implementation (hash) chosen by Anubis might significantly reduce this asymmetry, because the calculation speed is highly dependent on hardware.

reisse··on Ask HN: The government of my country blocked VPN access. What should I use?
Yes, it's superseded by V* stuff and derivatives (VLess...), and probably by Trojan, but the latter is less popular.
reisse··on Ask HN: The government of my country blocked VPN access. What should I use?
I also want to add here because a lot of people either mention Tor as a succesful solution, or mention why Tor is not a solution but state completely wrong reasons. And I have a good soapbox to stand once in a while.

Number one reason why Tor is dead is Cloudflare.

Let me digress here.

And Cloudflare by default makes browsing with Tor unusable. Either you're stuck with endless captchas, or you're banned outright.

Number two reason why Tor is dead is all other antifraud protections combined. Try paying with Stripe through Tor. There is quite a big chance you'll get an "unknown error" of sorts on Stripe side. Try to watch Netflix in Tor - exit nodes are banned.

Everyone kept shouting "Tor bad, Tor for criminals", and it became a self-fulfilling prophecy. It's really hard to do just browse web normally in Tor, because all "normal" sites consider it bad. The "wrong" sites, however, who expect Tor visitors...

reisse··on Ask HN: The government of my country blocked VPN access. What should I use?
> Actually, my main original purpose was to call (more) attention to the fact that looking for somebody specifically advertising a VPN to your particular country, for a censorship-resistance purpose

Please re-read my post then. I do not call to look for VPN for your or anyone's particular country, I call to look for VPNs for these specific countries because they have the current bleeding edge blocking tech, and if VPN works there now, it will 100% work in every other country. If you're in China, you don't have to look for Chinese VPNs, some of Russian ones will work there too.
