reindeerer··on The scientific objectives and payloads of Chang’E4 mission [pdf]
What i found intriguing is that Xilinx Q-Pro family is supposedly ITAR-controlled, so how are Chinese running those on the far side of the moon is .. an interesting question.

Further, googling "XQR2V3000" "AT697F" and together returns some interesting results from UK based research ..

Also, Chang'e actually does impressive amounts of processing on board, as they employ vision-based autonomous guidance algorithms for landing. Thats unprecedented

PDL2, Karel and URScript

> in the US on average distances between major cities are much longer than any individual country in Europe

Have you done the math ? Split US into west coast and east coast populuous regions, and nope, not the case.

Also, don't let yourself be fooled by the Mercator projection:

Right, of course, how could we forget the petrodollar.

If you think you see general solution for "self driving" in next 20 years, i have a bridge to sell you
reindeerer··on As the U.S. fantasizes, the rest of the world builds new transport system (2017)
As it happens, tunnels in cities are not some hitherto unheard of great invention. They form a fairly well known and efficient means of mass transportation systems across the world.

China is the same size as US. Somehow, they have HSR

Because people only ever fly cross country. Also ignore the carbon footprint. Also ignore the time to and from airports.

> we're on the way to violence, IMO.

Interesting to see if most of the violence will occur in digital space. It might already be going on in multiple forms

reindeerer··on What did Jesus really look like? (2015)
Yeah absolutely, it's just this one guy's nailing that happened to become central around biblical retellings.

reindeerer··on What did Jesus really look like? (2015)
The historical accounts seem to support the idea that the story is a combination of multiple people. But the guy who got nailed to a cross was an actual historical event and became the focal point for the amalgam.
reindeerer··on World's first fully electric bus fleet quietens Chinese megacity
Chinese vendors:

   Anhui Ankai Automobile
   BYD
   Shenzhen Wuzhoulong Motors Group
   Zhengzhou Yutong
   Zhongtong Bus
   Zhuhai Guangtong Automobile

In Europe, there are buses by EBUSCO, Daimler, Solaris and a number of others. In US, mostly Proterra, Canadian New Flyer, and BYD

reindeerer··on Status.github.com: “We're failing over a data storage system”
I think it's obvious that it's their SQL storage that holds the website up that is pretty much in read-only mode, and has been for a couple hours now, not the git repos themselves.
reindeerer··on The Only Linux Foundation CII Gold Rated Project Is a .. PHP Markdown Parser
Best practices are a bit like good genes. By no means a guarantee of success, fame, glory and riches, but damn if they don't make things easier.
reindeerer··on The Only Linux Foundation CII Gold Rated Project Is a .. PHP Markdown Parser
> I'm not sure what the point of the poster was.

Certainly not knocking on the badge or the practices.

I just found it amusing that PHP often gets a bad rap, but then shows up at the top of the listed projects for objectively good development practices.

A lot of that experimentation has been like efforts in trying to reconfigure the fundamentals of bicycle. Should pedals be pedals and should they be really at shoulder level, maybe the wheels should be side by side and one bigger than the other, steering wheel or touchscreen instead of handlebars .. Meanwhile, bicycles work.
reindeerer··on Ask HN: Predictions on what will be the most surprising technology in 10 years?
Small satellite and generally small spacecraft will drastically change the affordability of space, which will drive a lot of new development in space. It's already creating a lot of demand on market for new, small launchers as well to actually get significant numbers of sats up there, and it will become an accelerating loop between nanosat launch providers and small spacecraft getting more affordable quickly
