regnerba··on Crossplane – Open Source Multicloud Control Plane
It seems like you would still use both. Terraform to provision your Kubernetes cluster and other non-application specific infrastructure.

It seems like, and I have only briefly read the article, Crossplane is meant to bring all that application specific cloud infrastructure into the same configuration files you would use for defining you Kubernetes application.

So along with defining your ingress you define your mysql database and it gets provisioned. This keeps all your application specific provisioning together instead of having to use Terraform to provision your database ahead of time and keep it in sync with the application.

I will just add to what others have said by saying it also has built in bluetooth so you can connect controllers (works with Steam, Xbox, and PS4 controllers). It also has USB ports on it so I think you could plug keyboard and mouse into it, but never tried.

We use it to play co-op and party games together.

I am a huge PC gamer, always have been. So it's really nice to be able to use the machine I spent multiple thousands of dollars on and enjoy it in more places. Also since I play games with the wife it helps justify the cost of the rig and upgrades. :D

Rayman was awesome! We spent a great number of hours in that. Also already played Castle Crashers but I will look into those other two. Thank you.

From my experience, it only ever game down to if the games supported controllers well enough. Although as I mentioned in another comment, there was about a one week period where all Unity based games would just crash when launching. All other games fine. Unity games broken. Then fine a week later.

Have two of these, and a few Steam controllers, and god damn they are one of the best devices I own. My wife and I play games from the couch or bed all the time together.

Both of ours are hard wired, not wireless, and never had a problem with the streaming. Actually thats not true. After a windows update of some kind, possibly directx, all Unity based games failed to launch for about a week. Then back to normal.

The Steam controllers are not as awesome in my opinion, much preferred my Xbox controllers.

These things are awesome for when friends are over. Wish there was more games, but there are still a solid number of games that are great for the couch. Jackbox party packs, Tricky Towers, Tower Fall, Sonic All Stars Racing, Party Panic, Hell Divers, Overcooked, and the list goes on. Sooooo many good games and I got to keep them all in my Steam library without having to buy another console and rebuy games.

Very good point, thanks for responding.

regnerba··on Transitioning Google Cloud leadership after three great years
I feel like their support has really been improving. 4 years ago it felt like it was non-existent. Been pretty happy with it the last few times I have had to contact them.

I don't think we use any Alpha features, I know there are a couple Beta APIs from Kube we use, but we would be using those no matter where we ran our Kube deployment. We use fluentd for our log collection and Prometheus for metrics and alerting combined with Elastalert. So don't have any experience with Stackdriver.

Why is working with SSL certs an issue? We use the NGINX Ingress with cert-manager and have yet to have an issue. We only have a couple domains pointed at the cluster though, not sure if thats where your issue comes from. The two just worked though with very little tweaking.

As others have pointed out regulations. I believe Musk also really wants Tesla to succeed there (it is a very large market for them) and I have no doubt the Chinese government would punish another company of Musk's if they wanted to.

Isn't the lower orbit even better for them in terms of latency though? So long as the orbit doesn't decay faster than the planned 5 year life span of the sats, it's actually a win.
regnerba··on Ask HN: Is Google Compute down?
It's always great to go to your boss/CEO, explain what's going on, and then have to say "no, there is nothing we can do about it."
regnerba··on GCP is Down
I have friends in LA and New York all reporting access to Google going through China first and lots of packet loss.
regnerba··on Ask HN: Is Google Compute down?
Google IPs seem to be being routed to China for us.

We have servers in San Jose that cannot access Google services. Trace route shows everything going to China when leaving the San Jose data center. We can access the same services from Vancouver just fine.

regnerba··on GCP is Down
Are you in the Bay/Valley area? We have servers hosted there that cannot reach services in Google. We can reach those services fine from Vancouver however.

The traffic out of San Jose to Google is all being routed to China first and we are dropping a lot of packets when trying to get to Google from there.

regnerba··on Google Kubernetes Engine's third consecutive day of service disruption
GKE does the creation of the VMs and setup of them, joining them to the cluster and applying labels for example.

The specific issue appears to be about creating new "node pools". Creating standard VMs in GCP works fine however, so this is specific to GKE and their internal tooling that integrates with the rest of GCP.

GKE doesn't (at least to my knowledge) allow you to create VMs separately and join them to the cluster in any kind of easy fashion.

regnerba··on Google Kubernetes Engine's third consecutive day of service disruption
Is this just about creating new pools? I haven't noticed an issue with our existing pools scaling.
regnerba··on Application for Fixed Satellite Service by SpaceX
That's really interesting, than you for sharing.
regnerba··on Application for Fixed Satellite Service by SpaceX
Cheaper how? I would assume with a lower orbit they experience more drag and deorbit faster meaning they need to be replaced more often.

Maybe using the ones in lower orbit to cover more densely populated locations?

regnerba··on The program to build NASA’s moon rocket could double in price to $9B
I meant the Shuttle, but not so much in a "it was a terrible design" and more along the lines of "it had its design pulled in a bunch of different directions and ended up being less efficient at any of the tasks" which is what I feel the core of the original video.

The Russian Buran(?) was pretty clearly a better system and if I understand right thats because it wasn't trying to be the catch all system with competing goals from the Air Force, internal NASA goals, and congress/the senate(? not American so not sure which is correct here).

regnerba··on The program to build NASA’s moon rocket could double in price to $9B
Applies very well to the Space Shuttle design, and more recently the F-35 from my understanding of that situation.

SpaceX has lost a vehicle in flight before, CRS-7, so we actually have a comparison.

https://youtu.be/Il8w-Fz31Hk

On mobile so sorry if it isn't the best link. The failure happens as the vehicle cross the 44km altitude mark I believe. So you can scrub to that point.

regnerba··on Kubernetes on Google, Azure and AWS Compared
Out of curiosity what sort of resource utilization is each deployment?
regnerba··on Kubernetes on Google, Azure and AWS Compared
Not an expert, and this may have changed since I deployed this, but I based most of our deployment on the Prometheus helm chart.

The helm charts include this: https://github.com/helm/charts/tree/master/stable/prometheus...

We don't have 100, but definitely more than 20. A quick look at a random node from our cluster:

- 3x ingress pods (1 for an internal load balancer, 2 for an external load balancer)

- 1x cert-manager

- 2x production version of internal app01

- 2x staging version of internal app02

- 1x fluentd

- 1x elastalert

- 1x kubewatch

- 1x prometheus node exporter

- 1x redis for sentry

- 1x sentry web

- 2x sentry worker

- 4x sourcegraph language servers (there are 9 language servers running across the 4 nodes, this node seems to especially like them)

- 1x thelounge

- 1x staging version of app02

- 2x production version of app02

- 1x kube proxy

- 1x kubedns

- 1x couchdb (small footprint just for testing some things)

the node is just over half provisioned and we are due to add another node to the cluster soon.

I don't think I have logged into the Azure web UI in like... 3 years or so. However I have used AWS and GCP pretty extensively. I have always found the GCP web UI to be light years ahead of the AWS one. Curious for why you think the Azure one is ahead of GCP and AWS.
