refurb··on Astra for Law
I’m curious how this increased throughput happens.

You’ve accurately stated that AI isn’t as rigorous as a trained attorney. Doesn’t that mean that every single datapoint must be confirmed by a human?

How is that quicker than just using a human to read the content and make the call? Data entry savings?

refurb··on The GDR and Vietnam: From Fake Coffee to Coffee Empire
Vietnam has had a security apparatus all the way down to the neighborhood block level since the 1950’s. It was low tech and relied mostly on human surveillance but it did exist.

It has collected biometric information for a while and now has facial recognition in place for every single Vietnamese at this point. Combined with the camera coverage in Vietnam now I wouldn’t be surprised they can track anyone they wanted.

refurb··on The GDR and Vietnam: From Fake Coffee to Coffee Empire
Little known fact - Vietnam modernized their Public Security apparatus in the late 1950s with help from GDR’s Stasi.

Vietnams surveillance system, population database and use of biometrics were all adopted from the GDR.

refurb··on What do Visa and Mastercard do? An intro to card networks
The error that people make when criticizing card fees on merchants is that customers pay the cost. That’s not necessarily true.

There are benefits for merchants to accepting credit cards. More impulse buys, buying more per transaction. An owner may choose to absorb the merchant fee because the increase in sales (even at the lower profit per unit) means higher profits overall.

refurb··on Watch Los Angeles get built, one building at a time (1880–2026)
This is a solved problem.

Let people defer increases until their house is sold. This what many states do.

It’s seems insane that we “protect” people whose property taxes are going up because their home is getting so valuable

refurb··on Why are European countries moving their gold out of North America?
It’s hard to take comments like this serious with all the hyperbole.

But regardless. Polls of your average citizen aren’t worth a whole lot considering most people get their information from social media.

refurb··on Dimethyl Mercury Exposure Incident at MIT
It can be something as simple as an analytical reference.

If you’re testing for dimethyl mercury in say fish, you need a standardized sample of dimethyl mercury to run.

These references are highly dilute and thus less hazardous. But some labs prepare their own references rather than buying them.

That requires working with pure dimethyl mercury.

The hazard is manageable as long as you’re prepared. Chemists work with lots of hazardous chemicals and it can all be managed with the right preparation.

refurb··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
Nope. There was another protest where the police asked the protestors status. They then called Immigration Canada to verify.

You literally have the cops in Canada working hand in hand with federal immigration enforcement. No politicians crying about it. No protests by Canadians.

Just the enforcement of common sense law

They aren’t legal any more if their visa expires?

I’m an immigrant to the US. I knew the risk that at any time the rules could change and I’ll be headed to my home country.

Don’t blame me when someone inserts themselves into a discussion they don’t understand and start throwing insults
refurb··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
Hilarious. My comment was replying to another comment that was discussing a different case, not the one in the article.

Yet you throw around insults and labels at me. Who is the callous one here?

refurb··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
Welcome to how immigration works in other countries. Canada just changed a bunch of rules and is actively sending immigration officers to immigrant protests to run status checks and deport anyone in the country illegally.

There is no right for non-citizens to come to the US.

refurb··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
Having the only appointment be a year or more out isn’t new. Anyone I knew wouldn’t take the risk of leaving the US if they didn’t have an appointment secured.

Sure lawyers rely on semantics. But I said “silly semantics”.

Claiming that destroying evidence of a crime proves no crime was committed is the logic of a 1 year old who thinks the world disappears when they close their eyes.

A lawyer can go into court and argue semantics around the edges but isn’t going to get very far using semantics to argue destroying evidence also erases a crime.

> Where the money is not coming from are consumers.

This is 100% wrong.

Look at Anthropic's quarterly revenue from AI sales ($11B), OpenAI (6.7B) and XAI ($5B). That's $23B a quarter or $100B annualized. And it's still growing.

Inesting $1T when your revenue is 10% annually and growing quickly is not unusual.

refurb··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
I think your handwaving away the impact isn't all that convincing and some don't make all that much sense.

> American products are very expensive, and Canada is one of the few markets where they are viable. That's why DJT is so upset with alcohol bans in Canada.

American alcohol is "very expensive" and Canada is the only viable market? That makes no sense. It's not like Canada is a bastion of cheap labor.

DJT is bringing up the alcohol sales most likely because business leaders are bringing it up. The overall impact to US GDP is miniscule.

> There are lots of markets for Canadian goods. And ultimately this whole process is encouraging Canadian producers to explore some of those markets, which in the long run is good for Canada.

If there are lots of markets for Canadian goods then why aren't they selling into them now? And the US is the biggest consumer market in the world (2x bigger than the EU which is the next biggest). Losing the biggest market in the world can't be argued to be "minor".

refurb··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
You sure? Canada's economy is struggling as is. The healthcare system is holding on by a thread. You ready for unemployment to double? If there is a significant recession, tax reciepts go down and healthcare spending gets further cut.
refurb··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
Canada's tariff's will be meaningless.

Canada's GDP is 32% exports. Of that, 75% goes to the US, or ~25% of Canada's GDP or $1 out of every $4.

US exports to Canada are 11% and 16% go to Canada or around 1.7% of US GDP.

If both countries decide to start ramping up tariffs, one of them is going to collapse and one won't even notice a difference.

refurb··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
The US has the largest consumer market in the world. The next biggest is the EU which is only 50% the size of the US.

If countries of the world decide to trade among themselves, their economies are going to be a lot smaller.

A good definition of it working is keeping the same system, and allowing the people elected by it to rule?
refurb··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
AI companies are destroying old books. This has nothing to do with the government.
refurb··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
You realize that it;'s not exactly democratic to change the rules just because you don't like who was elected democratically? That's the opposite of democracy.

> A wiped phone can't contain contraband

There is no requirement that evidence is "contraband".

As other comments have said, the courts aren't autistic. They don't fall for filly semantic games.

> Destroying evidence assumes he is guilty of a crime which there be evidence of.

This is 100% untrue. You can be guilty of destroying evidence that includes no criminal activity whatsoever.

refurb··on Universal health coverage could save $1T and 114k lives a year: study
What hospitals makes has nothing to do with physician pay - those are separate categories. Hospitals aren’t going to magically start giving some of their profit to doctors to help cover their lower fees.

OP makes a good point. The studies assumes two diametrically opposed things will happen - doctors will take a 50% pay cut but access to primary care physicians will increase.

Why would we solve the primary care physician shortage by cutting their pay?

refurb··on People are worried about America's solvency
You need to adjust for inflation.

Also the correct measure is % of GDP

refurb··on People are worried about America's solvency
US government solvency is backed by the power to tax and tap into the massive US economy.

Considering the US has one of the lower overall tax rates of developed economies, I’m not sure we’ve reached any sort of crisis level

refurb··on Semaglutide linked to lower predicted dementia risk
I disagree on the “if you’re poor”. I find eating healthy cheaper.

You can prepare healthy meals from basic and cheap foodstuffs like vegetables, whole grains and legumes, eggs, low cost meat cuts etc. You can prepare delicious meals for under $1 each.

Buying prepared unhealthy foods is what is expensive.
