reedf1··on How getting richer made teenagers less free
> Around 35% of American families have been investigated by CPS

What??

> Fully 50% of Black voters in our poll agreed that allowing a 10-year-old to play unsupervised at a park for a few hours was grounds for a CPS call. 33% of white voters and 37% of Hispanic voters said the same.

I am speechless. Has so much changed in the 20 odd years since I was a kid? I was playing outside unsupervised from maybe age 9. What honestly are the kids supposed to be scared of?

reedf1··on 4 billion if statements (2023)
It's a wild statement for a few reasons; your observation is one of them.
reedf1··on Engineers: Stop trying to win other people's game
Ironic article that describes 'AI Engineering' as the frontier skill that separates you from the crowd. No - in this era of workslop everyone and their grandmother is an 'AI Engineer', being the one guy who can read the spec and debug the kubernetes yaml is actually going to separate you from the rest.
reedf1··on The fuck off contact page
I think the last point combined with some real data or case studies would prompt introspection.

Anecdotally I stick to companies with good customer support like glue, even if their product is inferior. It's an absolute wonder to be taken seriously by a company, to have feedback integrated into future products, or just have small issues taken care of without hassle.

reedf1··on Autism should not be treated as a single condition
I was recently labelled neurodivergent by a colleague at work, as far as I can tell this is simply because I am good with numbers and don't like parties. I'm not sure how I feel about this, I wouldn't say I am Autistic or show any representative characteristics.
reedf1··on Brexit Hit to UK Economy Double Official Estimate, Study Finds
It is completely verboten for the political class to mention Brexit or its reversal.
reedf1··on Exploring the limits of large language models as quant traders
you simply will lose trading directly with an llm. mapping the dislocation by estimating the percentage of llm trading bots is useful though.
reedf1··on AGI fantasy is a blocker to actual engineering
Yes - and the water used is largely non-consumptive.
reedf1··on Ask HN: Does anyone have scans of these missing PC Plus issues (1991–1993)?
Hi billpg - did you get these in the end? I'll make time for this if not.
reedf1··on Solarpunk is happening in Africa
This is a far more negative comment than the linked article for those who wish to read it.
reedf1··on Lessons from interviews on deploying AI Agents in production
What you actually need in most business cases is a 100% auditable, explainable and deterministic workflow. While AI is strictly deterministic - it is technically chaotic. Introducing this in large customer pipelines or in intensive data applications means that even if the AI only does something a bit off 99%, 99.9% or 99.99% you will see large spurious error rates in your workflow. Worst of all these will be difficult to explain - or maybe even purposely hidden, as I have seen some agents attempt to do.
reedf1··on This World of Ours (2014) [pdf]
honestly I find any idiosyncratic style refreshing in AI slop world
reedf1··on Ask HN: Does anyone have scans of these missing PC Plus issues (1991–1993)?
I'm busy the next few days but I could clear an afternoon to check this out. I live nearby.
reedf1··on Language Support for Marginalia Search
I feel a bit bad it was interpreted that way.

Some fun context, I was trying to find a scanned copy of the first 'correct' book on optics (written by https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ibn_al-Haytham). Possibly the first person to really use the scientific method in circa 1000CE (!!). And I found this (https://cudl.lib.cam.ac.uk/view/MS-PETERHOUSE-00209/103) filled with interesting optical diagrams like something out of my high school physics notebooks. Anyway - I was also thinking about how they might index interesting doodles in the margins. So it was on my mind.

reedf1··on Knocker, a knock based access control system for your homelab
It's much simpler to babysit a service than to manage a relatively higher risk thing like generating, rotating and communicating public keys between all of the nodes in the network.
reedf1··on Language Support for Marginalia Search
It's a fine name! I had marginalia on the mind - I am reading The Name of the Rose.
reedf1··on Language Support for Marginalia Search
Took me too long to realize this wasn't a tool to search for marginalia in scanned manuscripts.
reedf1··on Esports scholarship at Deutsche Bahn (German railways)
I will hire on the spot any candidate with 1000+ hours in factorio.
reedf1··on Why are interviews harder than the job?
I mean this is certainly an effect, but largely outdated reasoning. Every tech company you can think of copied verbatim a Google-style interview process out of complete reflex without understanding largely why. Now you discover that your candidate, who can invert a tree just fine, and can regurgitate quicksort, is totally useless at delivering software, managing stakeholders, or understanding the business logic.
reedf1··on The Wind, a Pole, and the Dragon
My total guess is that "The wind, a pole and the Dragon" is some kind of idiom that means something like "Starts strong and then fizzles out".
reedf1··on DSM Disorders Disappear in Statistical Clustering of Psychiatric Symptoms (2024)
Sounds like the field needs to acknowledge the weakness of prescriptivism similar to software engineering with design patterns. The need for diagnostic criteria is understandable - but it definitely should be up to the discretion of the doc.
reedf1··on We Rarely Lose Technology (2023)
Lost technology is an enduring theme because for much of human history it was very easy to "lose". The main narrative of the last 2000 years is one of a fallen great civilization. Only in the past 100 years or so do we have large continuously maintained corpus of knowledge instantly replicated across the entire world, translated to almost every spoken language.
reedf1··on I should have loved electrical engineering
Weirdly my background is physics and CS and I am recently discovering a love of EE. I don't think it's as easy to pare these subjects apart as history suggests. Modern bleeding-edge solutions require a "full-stack" understanding. If you know maxwell's equations with your physics knowledge - then you can implement them numerically with your CS knowledge - build a hardware optimized version with verilog/FPGA with your EE knowledge.
reedf1··on William Wordsworth's letter: "The Law of Copyright" (1838)
I think this is quite a naive reading of it - it is very very sharp criticism with several arguments made, written through a very polite veneer.
reedf1··on Yamanot.es: A music box of train station melodies from the JR Yamanote Line
And your first comment is shitting on those trying to understand instead of applying your own analysis? Sorry for showing an interest I guess. Hopefully the irony of you own analysis of "English-speakers" isn't lost on you.
reedf1··on Yamanot.es: A music box of train station melodies from the JR Yamanote Line
This probably has a philosophical underpinning in Animism, almost everything is anthropomorphized and given a "soul", personality. This has the affect of humanizing the most utilitarian parts of day-to-day life, commuting, a tax office, etc.
reedf1··on Leeches and the legitimizing of folk-medicine
To me the obvious "cure" for your sore-throat in this story was doing nothing. This has surprising efficacy. Antibiotics are serious drugs. They are inordinately useful, but they also have side-effects. Antibiotics can wheel your body completely out of equilibrium - your sore throat could have been due to yeast or been some kind of fungal thing which the antibiotics inturn made worse (or caused some kind of fungal -> bacterial cycle). In this case homeopathy gave you some utility; it gave you psychological permission to do nothing while feeling like you were doing something.
reedf1··on Swiss vs. UK approach to major tranport projects
Blocking high-speed rail in the name of conservation makes me want to bash my head against a wall. Guess we'll buy 10000 diesel trucks to move goods north-south instead. Car-world isn't good for conservation, rail is. It's missing the forest for the trees. These laws are selectively invoked by interest groups, they don't event serve the legitimate cause of conservationists - there is enough ammo in UK law to block any development.
reedf1··on UK government advises deleting emails to save water
My understanding is that SSDs are in the sub-watt territory when idle. So ironically the act of deleting the email instead of keeping the drive in steady-state will likely use significantly more power.
reedf1··on GPT-OSS-120B runs on just 8GB VRAM & 64GB+ system RAM
Given that this is at the middle/low-end of a consumer gaming setups - it seems particularly realistic that many people can run this out of the box on their home PC - or with an upgrade for a few hundred bucks. This doesn't require an A100 or some kind of fancy multi-gpu setup.
