redsummer··on Carl Bildt: The truth about refugees in Sweden
Mono-ethnic modern states have high levels of altruism and 'civil society' - Japan, Finland etc. Multi-cultural societies don't since there is less trust and more us-vs-them mentality.
redsummer··on Carl Bildt: The truth about refugees in Sweden
People might wonder why Swedish politicians produce these absurd head-in-the-sand articles, but the truth is that Sweden has an extremely conformist political culture.

Recently an artist was imprisoned for 6 months and had some of his artwork destroyed for going against this groupthink: http://www.thelocal.se/20140821/swedish-artist-jailed-for-ra...

There are plenty of groups whose job it is to make sure you lose your job if you don't go along with the orthodoxy : https://www.vice.com/en_au/article/the-rise-of-swedens-far-l...

redsummer··on Carl Bildt: The truth about refugees in Sweden
Asylum seekers are now 2-3% is Swedens population. If the US did the same thing that would mean 10 million people. (Israel, next door, has taken in zero)

The people coming in now are completely different from Balkan refugees, Persians and Lebanese. In the case of the Balkan refugees, they were European. And the Persians were fleeing from an Islamic theocracy - they didn't share their values. Ironically, it was a women of Christian Lebanese descent who was murdered by these new arrivals: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killing_of_Alexandra_Mezher

Bildt mentions Spotify and Minecraft, but the new arrivals are making a different use of modern technology: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/sweden-facebook-gang...

Carl Bildt has his head in the sand. Look at these most-wanted pictures from Sweden and Denmark: https://www.interpol.int/notice/search/wanted/(RequestingCou...

Try not to notice any patterns, since that would be crimethink.

It's not true that Muslim immigrants are not integrating with modern technologically-literate Sweden. Many are making increasingly sophisticated use of social media: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/sweden-facebook-gang...

Tim Cook has just been repainting Jobs's toys for the last five years. Cook's success is a testament to how good the toys were, but nobody wants Woody and Buzz Lightyear anymore.

I'm an iOS developer. I'm sure if Apple were making decent machines I would be more optimistic about my job. But the current situation is making me prepare for an escape route. I'm sure there are many others who feel the same, and that will have a knock on effect on the iOS world.

The internet means you can ignore this, and this is why Trump won. You don't have to see it if you stay home and commune electronically with people with the same backgrounds who agree with you.
redsummer··on The man who sold the world on credit cards
I didn't know that was a main reason for using Credit over Debit. I only fly about three times a year, so not sure it would be worth it. I think the main reason I don't use credit cards too much is the idea of debt. I've been in debt before and it is not pleasant, so I try to avoid it as much as possible.

It's probably not a logical thing, but more like people who went through food rationing - who would never leave even a pea on their plate afterwards. On a more macro-level, you can probably see a reluctance to splash cash around for around a decade after each financial collapse.

redsummer··on The man who sold the world on credit cards
The method I spend money (offline) is in this order:

1 - Apple Pay (if available)

2 - Debit Card

3 - Credit Card

And cash for small amount if it makes tipping easier, or they don't take anything else. I only use Credit Cards for car hire, where it seems to be obligatory. Online I always use debit card.

redsummer··on Watching Wikipedia's extinction event from a distance
Wikipedia was the original fake news. For instance, someone might edit an article to say that a person was a known political extremist. Someone else might write an article (not on Wikipedia) saying the same thing (after having read the Wikipedia article). Years later, if the information is questioned on Wikipedia, then editors will add a reference to the off-wiki article, and everyone will be happy. Circular fake news, with truth going down the plughole. The entropic heat death of information.

I've looked at large articles I contributed to a few years ago and they are now disasters. Full of bowdlerisation, inconsistent style, and false snippets of information. I think the abusive nature of many Wikipedia admins, and the hostility of Wikipedia itself to knowledge, will eventually just make it a 4chan with pretentions.

redsummer··on Retrospective: Swift at Artsy
As an old Objective-C programmer who has only dipped their toe into Swift, I wonder if it's worth going straight to React instead of Swift.
redsummer··on Handful of “highly toxic” Wikipedia editors cause 9% of abuse
You are right. But I do think that what is now called "fake news" is generated by a similar mechanism. I don't know what term to use. Wrong or false don't quite cover it. Perhaps 'unmoored' - a boat can be unmoored accidentally or deliberately, or by outside events - a big wave.
redsummer··on Handful of “highly toxic” Wikipedia editors cause 9% of abuse
It doesn't have to be deliberate, purposeful, or even conscious - though it often is. An exaggeration can be treated as fact. That fact can again be exaggerated, until the words bear no relation to reality. Wikipedia practically invented this mechanism.
redsummer··on Handful of “highly toxic” Wikipedia editors cause 9% of abuse
What does this mean in practice? Editors on Wikipedia are not a balanced cross-section of the world. I would guess they at 90% male, nerdy, middle class, and disproportionately liberal. This will be reflected in their articles, and the leeway given to certain 'facts'. And god help you if there is an article edited about you after you die - then the gloves are off and slander is fine.
redsummer··on Handful of “highly toxic” Wikipedia editors cause 9% of abuse
I was about to write the same thing. Many articles have fake information.

redsummer··on The AI Threat Isn’t Skynet – It’s the End of the Middle Class
AI makes me want to join the Amish. You learn things to give yourself a future and self-fulfilment. But AI will catch up with your skills eventually. You would need to spend all your time learning if you want to keep ahead, and never have time to put to work what you have learned.

Wouldn't you rather have a community and a meaningful life than be a meat-based beta version of a future AI?

redsummer··on I'm Loyal to Nothing Except the Dream
I guess you'll be happier if minority religions were murdered rather prioritized. "We can't prioritise Jews being murdered by Nazis - we must cover our eyes and ignore it"

Perhaps it's only Christians you want murdered.

redsummer··on I'm Loyal to Nothing Except the Dream
What Christian exemption?
redsummer··on I'm Loyal to Nothing Except the Dream
The opposite situation was the Interahamwe who had just committed genocide in Rwanda, and skipped over the border to Congo, only to be housed and fed by international aid organisations. They were fleeing, so they must be poor refugees!
redsummer··on I'm Loyal to Nothing Except the Dream
There is plenty of evidence that Christians are being persecuted in Syria and other places, some even call it genocide: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/jan/13/christians-fle...

US liberals have a blind-spot about it, because they have an image of Christian conservatives refusing to make gay wedding cakes in their head. So Christians can't possibly be persecuted! The usual US narcissism.

redsummer··on I'm Loyal to Nothing Except the Dream
> You're assuming people not from these minority religions aren't being murdered.

No I'm not.

> Apparently you would, during WW2, say no to 7th day adventists, gays or socialists.

No I wouldn't.

redsummer··on I'm Loyal to Nothing Except the Dream
Are you suggesting it's wrong to prioritise religious minorities who are being murdered? Would you, during WW2, say no to Jews, because it would be a 'religious test'? What would be worse, having a religious test or being driven to extinction?
redsummer··on I'm Loyal to Nothing Except the Dream
I can't find any mention of Islam, Muslims, Christians etc in the order: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/jan/27/donald-trump...

redsummer··on I'm Loyal to Nothing Except the Dream
This is hysteria.

"he signed an executive order that literally, not figuratively, banned Muslims from entering the US"

Of the 10 countries with the largest Muslim populations, only one - Iran - has been restricted: http://www.pewforum.org/2015/04/02/muslims/pf_15-04-02_proje...

The list of countries was previously drawn up by the Obama administration. I'm not in favor of the restrictions, but there is no need to make things up.
