red2awn··on Delta-V: Designing the Asteroid Mining Ship 'Konstantin'
Not related to the novel, but what is the current biggest technological challenge to asteroid mining?
red2awn··on AMD Zen 3/Ryzen 5000 announcement [video]
Well I hope they release the 5700X soon. I was excited for Zen 3, but their price bump and lack of a middle ground option left me conflicted whether I should shell out more money for a 5800X or get a last gen CPU.
red2awn··on A Field Guide to Genetic Programming (2008) [pdf]
Just read wikipedia. [0] is also a good high-level overview of the different algorithms in metaheuristics.

Well GP is not random search, but still, the space is too huge for it to find anything of significance yet. I remember reading a paper that trained GP to write a sorting program, that is around the most complex problem we can solve with it now.

In my opinion, what makes natural selection work but not GP, is that the life time of Earth and the number of individuals existed vastly exceeds the typical parameters of a GP simulation. Biological programs are also less likely to be killed off by a mutation compared to GP programs, so in some ways, the gradient is a lot smoother.

red2awn··on A Field Guide to Genetic Programming (2008) [pdf]
Genetic programming works basically the same as the other genetic algorithms, except that the individuals are variable size programs, whereas GA uses fixed length values like a vector.
red2awn··on Strategic Communication – programming language made out of buzzwords
Job requirement for an unpaid internship position:

* 5 years of experience in programming strategic-communication

red2awn··on AMD Announces Ryzen “Zen 3” and Radeon “RDNA2” Presentations for October
It is important to note that it is 50% performance improvement per watt, not absolute performance.
red2awn··on Vue.js Creator Evan You Interview
Just here to thanks Evan (and friends) for building such an awesome technology.
red2awn··on Show HN: Bootstrap icons as Vue components
Author here. This library is for people who are only using the icons without bootstrap. I know BootstrapVue can do this as well but I dislike pulling in a massive library just to use a few icons.

Plus this works with Vue 3.

red2awn··on Things you didn't know you could diff in GitHub
More interestingly, Github can view and diff 3D .stl files.

red2awn··on DearPyGui
Difference to pyimgui?
red2awn··on My AI Timelines Have Sped Up
Narrow AI has made a lot of progress in recent years, but in my opinion we are completely lost regarding AGI.
red2awn··on Being OK with not being extraordinary
Squatting atg is just not very common to start with.
red2awn··on A New Chapter for PyPy
The JSON library is probably a C-extension so PyPy won't make it any faster.
red2awn··on Hiring Without Whiteboards
What kind of portfolio worthy projects take less than 3 hours to create?
red2awn··on Steve Wozniak sues YouTube over ongoing bitcoin scams
Normal sense is thrown out the window when people see a chance to get free money. And it's not that hard to buy bitcoin is it?
red2awn··on Hacker95.css – Make Hacker News look like Windows 95
There are a few chrome extensions for adding custom CSS. Try "stylebot" or "User javascript and css", they both works ok.
red2awn··on Zulip 3.0: Threaded Open Source Team Chat
Congratulations to the Zulip team, this release looks awesome!
red2awn··on Website allows you to experience what it is like to live with dyslexia (2016)
I always read clang as "C-lang", then heard a LLVM developer said "cling". I feel like if the pronunciation is not obvious, the project should at least specify it somewhere offically.

Also, NGINX is pronounced "engine X".

red2awn··on Ask HN: Should I buy Mac book Pro now or wait for ARM?
Slightly off topic, but i7/i9 is in trouble right now against AMD Ryzen chips. Laptops with Ryzen 7 4000H series CPUs are faster and cheaper than top of the line Intel chips.
red2awn··on De-Escalation Keeps Protesters and Police Safer
That's what the government says, but not what they actually do. Here in Hong Kong, police fires tear gas directly into people's (tiny) apartment just for opening the window to take a peek outside.
red2awn··on Crew Dragon Docks with ISS
A nation in 50 years sounds like an Elon timescale. More likely a small settlement of <100 people for research and exploration.
red2awn··on Stoke – A stochastic superoptimizer and program synthesizer
I haven't looked at it in detail, but from what I gathered from the README, it just seems like a very simple form of linear genetic programming (with only mutation and no crossover).
red2awn··on Stoke – A stochastic superoptimizer and program synthesizer
This is, in essence, a monkey trying to lower a cost function by randomly manipulating an input AST (empty for synthesis). So theoretically it will be able to produce any program, just not in a reasonable time frame.
red2awn··on Qt 5.15 LTS
Sublime doesn't really use Skia anymore, as per this (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23312357) comment.
red2awn··on VS Code Real-Time Debugging
This same guy also made the Draw.io extension :)
red2awn··on Ask HN: What's your quarantine side project?
Building a chrome extension to block spoilers on youtube. Got frustrated with "Spoiler Protection 2.0" since it doesn't cover the thumbnails. For some type of contents (ie combat sports/MMA), the thumbnail basically gives away the results.
red2awn··on Wgpu-rs on the web
I was just playing around with Iced yesterday, it is indeed very nice. I wish it has better docs though.
red2awn··on Khan Academy requests for donations as their servers are at 250% normal load
But the value he provides to the world is (in my opinion) more than 40x the average person.
