Nope, they can be - it's how things like SuperGenPass work. (Highly recommended btw)
reconbot··on Ever Better Cryptanalytic Results Against SHA-1
I'm not a git developer, but I remember from linus's google tech talk that it would be pretty trivial, and you can already use your favorite hashes. I don't know anything about repo compatibility. But this wont break git, your source files will still have the same likely hood of producing a collision as they always have, nil. This just means that git could possibly be subject to attack, and that gpg signing sha1 hashes may not be 100% the best method of saying the following code is trusted. But I seriously doubt any sort of injection would compile.

EDIT: Thinking about it, you could have a commented area somewhere where you put in garbage characters to try to generate a collision, not unlike producing two word documents that read slightly different (different clauses in a contract for example) but have a ton of random metadata that causes the collision. But this isn't an attack on SHA1 just on hashes in general.

reconbot··on Announcing your plans makes you less motivated to accomplish them.
I was about to boast about something... but never mind.
reconbot··on User gets fed up with bug; cracks program to fix it himself.
Oh why did you guys link to this, do you know how many hours I'm going to loose now?
reconbot··on Typing The Letters A-E-S Into Your Code? You’re Doing It Wrong
Not to feed this rant too much, but I believe the cookie would be used for verifying a cross authentication attempt. Not exactly sure how it would be used but I'm pretty sure once you've got a session going on both servers the original token would be removed.

Also processes vs threads was just another interview question, it was only slightly more relevant to the story than unicorns in space.

reconbot··on Coding Horror: Why Isn't My Encryption.. Encrypting?
I'm a fan of his and I think a lot of what he writes about is pretty poor. I don't mind because he is a good writer and he doesn't pretend to be an expert about most of what he writes about. I do mind that he thinks it's not important a lot of the time. I can't fault his record though, he's a successful in his field, and his latest ventures have been really wonderful. I disagree on his views (I don't know C well but I understand why you might want to learn it Jeff!) and I don't think we should see every article of his here, but he's hardly the worst pundit out there.
reconbot··on Poll: What is your highest educational qualification?
Me neither and there are a few instances where I regret it, but mostly during the time I "should" have been in school I was learning how to run my own company, live and provide for myself, taxes, health care and everything else. I have college educated friends who have gone back to working retail with no savings account because they don't know better. (I yell at them and teach them things from time to time, least I can do when I see friends making mistakes.)

I think in the long run it wont matter what level of education I've "completed", I'm always going to be learning and I'm always going to try to be good at what I do. Taking classes might help me one day, you never know.

reconbot··on China's Google Maps (zoom out for best effect)
I hope the roundabout has better lanes then that one does!
reconbot··on Ask HN: Slicehost vs Mosso Cloud Server?
Bandwidth is not included in Mosso's Cloud. I think if you were to max out on bandwidth slicehost is still a better offer.
reconbot··on How to Fix the Uncommunicative Table
This reminds of of some of the graphs they have in wired. While I'd love to have a table to backup every visualization, I think if you're trying to communicate the data you need to have both. I wish I knew who designs the graphs for wired, I'd follow his work any day.
reconbot··on To Everywhere in 42 Minutes
The coolant would only need to last 42 minutes if you thought it could never get stuck.
reconbot··on [dead]

reconbot··on Slicehost iPhone App
Well, it's not made by slicehost at all, just a customer who wanted it. They are very appreciative for it and even use it themselves (I'll imagine not for any internal infrastructure stuff.). On their podcast they thanked the guy profoundly.
reconbot··on How to block the DiggBar
I'll explain, The problem is you seeing the links its that google will index the digg links to your site, people will pass around the digg links to your site. You'll see the digg link for every link you click on too.
reconbot··on IE6 Upgrade Warning
I'm a corporate IT guy, we're on IE7 and chrome (for it's application style shortcuts) and my users get about a gig in their inbox, but only if they need it. We had to wait to upgrade to ie7 but eventually the webapps we needed to use decided to "certify" ie7. Before that point we upgraded a few people for testing and nothing seemed broken but we still needed most everybody to run a "supported" platform.
reconbot··on BackType Launches Wordpress Plugin to Connect Conversations
As an author of articles I can say I get annoyed that all the comments from my readers (I do this socially not professionally - so mainly my friends) are stuck in facebook, google reader or twitter and not on my site. These big apps by go away but I've had my "blog" for almost 10 years, I'd rather be in control or have a copy of the discussion.
reconbot··on Apache CouchDB 0.9 has been released
I thought you could write a javascript function to filter out datasets for each server, the client then queries multiple servers looking for what it wants?
reconbot··on Jungledisk has been down since Saturday - Mosso Cloud Files Fail
I've got little love for Mosso and their offerings. Rackspace as a whole has never done me wrong but I have wasted many hours working with their techs dealing with some of their server problems on Mosso (this is for hosting not cloudfiles). I eventually had to ask for my money back which they gave me but not before they tried everything in their power to keep me working with them. (Which by that point I considered a waste of time and migrated clients over to SliceHost which later got bought out by Rackspace...)

So while I may be biased - I'd like to point out that a bug in a end user product brought down their entire cloudfiles platform and that the same bug also effected S3 and had no noticeable effect.

reconbot··on Jungledisk has been down since Saturday - Mosso Cloud Files Fail
Well, they bought JD because they wanted to market their cloud storage system. Its a powerful tool for gaining non developer users.
reconbot··on Tell HN: I think I'm quitting my job today

reconbot··on Goodbye Google: "Visual Design Lead" leaves Google
Are any of those mockups public? I love seeing good design ideas.
reconbot··on New Google Chrome Beta
A significant amount of work is going into both those builds but a lot more is needed. As much as I love having a multiprocess browser the V8 JS engine is the real heart of gold of chrome, and that is cross platform. Just nothing uses it besides chrome as far as I know. I do know that the next Mozilla JS engine feels to me at least (and if you benchmark different apps) just as fast. So the next firefox will be on par with speed and it will be cross platform. It will just have tabs that are not as cool.
reconbot··on Dreamhost St. Patrick's 92% off
Don't bother with them if you want anything more then a personal site. Their slowness and downtime will eat any commercial site alive. I'm a long time member but I can't use them for more then my blog and photos (I have lots and lots - more then 10 gigs and that would fill up most vps's) because when it comes to sites for other people you'll just loose customers.

I'm editing to add that I'm looking for a way to move my gallery (10+ gigs of photos) over to slicehost with a mounted "S3 volume" I'm not sure of the performance hits, but I'm willing to bet I'll get a faster site out of it.

reconbot··on Can you forge your future self when you never leave the present?
I use facebook for showing my twitter updates (as most of my friends don't use twitter), showing my google reader shares (as most of my friends don't have google reader) and for event planning. The ability to easily share videos and photos also helps greatly. My last couple of birthdays were a little different and people took a little convincing. The hardest one was convincing people to buy into throwies, as you're "throwing money" around the city. Facebook make that possible without having to convince every single person myself. Once I got a group going they were convincing each other. And yes, everyone had a lot of fun. =)
reconbot··on What is PIFTS.exe?
Norton broke their silence. http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Protection-Blog/Symant...

Apparently it was just part of the update but it went out unsigned so it tripped the firewall. Some users were causing trouble so they just nuked all forum posts and accounts with the word PIFTS. It looks like maybe a bit more then that was going on, but other then some fighting with customers there's nothing special going on.

reconbot··on How to Be Jason Bourne: Multiple Passports, Swiss Banking, and Crossing Borders
I'd much rather learn how it works so I can identify, avoid, or fight. Which are all preferable to me then ignoring it. Criminals are hackers in their own right (never mind criminal hackers, but society hackers, they make society do things it was never intended to.) and I have to say reading about a good scam is almost as entertaining as reading about a good startup. One just has more practical value.
reconbot··on Flipping Typical (Fonts)
When this happens part of me goes "Nooo!! I could have done that!" and another part goes "Sweet!! Now I don't have to build it!" It's hard to get the two parts to settled back down though.

May I ask what you do use exactly? MySQL has always been my goto for simple db needs. What do you normally use and what's your "general" cases where you wouldn't use it?
