reconbot··on React, Relay and GraphQL: Under the Hood of the Times Website Redesign
This is very similar to the stack we use at BDG Media (bustle.com, romper.com, etc) We use Amazon Lambda, GraphQL, a custom model layer with data loader and redis, and preact. We haven't seen a clear benefit from Relay or Apollo with out front end apps (tbd on our admin apps) but we have enjoyed the Relay spec to help set server side conventions.

GraphQL has helped us make an api that is easy to understand, easy to change and and easy to use. We love it.

reconbot··on How 'OK' took over the world (2011)
"Alright" works pretty well for me. It probably falls into the same bucket as "OK" however. Tone and context keep it out of the affirmative. "I hear you" gets thrown around a lot but if someone is looking for an answer it infuriates them in a way that "Alright" doesn't.
reconbot··on Screen sharing comes to Slack video calls
This is great. I hope they're able to stay on top of other things like cpu usage and general bug fixes while they add these new features. On OSX it hovers around 20% cpu while idle.
reconbot··on Show HN: Stanchion – Add priorities to your web app's network requests
I think it's an often ignored aspect of client side development. We often leave requests loading when we're not listening for their completion, stack too many requests, have many requests for the same thing, etc. I really like the facebook/dataloader approach for keeping a local identity map and batching requests but priority is still a concern.
reconbot··on LoadAverage is shutting down
Is matrix https://hubzilla.org/hubzilla/ ? It's a very hard term to search for.
reconbot··on Little Snitch 3 – Protect your privacy
They do stop, and while I do agree it's annoying at first, your decisions about what to block and when, are different from my decisions about what to block and when. It's not about "threats" per-say but about privacy, operational security and choice.

I would totally accept some presets for apple services.

reconbot··on Graphviz in the browser
This is a beautiful thing. D3 can do a lot but very few programs have replicated what graphviz's dot can do.
reconbot··on AirPods are now available
Positional audio also opens a world of options for blind people. Microsoft Guide Dogs is working on this very thing. http://www.theverge.com/2014/11/6/7164623/microsoft-3d-sound...
reconbot··on A practical guide to securing macOS
I do, I've been a heavy user of both for 4+ years, but I'm not a security expert of any kind.

LastPass has been exploited a few times in ways that could have given up passwords. Their UX and server infrastructure seems to be a mess of php scripts, that itself doesn't have to be insecure but is a code smell. Their commercial support looks unmaintained. Both platforms support "cloud" based syncing but since 1Password's is pretty new I can't speak to it.

1Password does local encryption outside of the browser, LastPass will encrypt locally in the browser.

1Password can leverage other file transports to sync passwords, iCloud, DropBox, or any shared directory. LastPass does it all with their servers.

LastPass's web interface if compromised can have you give away the password to all your passwords. 1Password has a much smaller risk of this and would probably have to include a malicious software update.

1Password Families/Teams exists and I'm not familiar with it but it probably has a similar attack vector to LastPass's web interfaces.

You know, they both offer end to end encryption with similar attacks. Overall these companies are big targets and I'd rather keep my passwords offline or synced via side channels in a standalone app like 1Password.

PS I'd be amiss if I didn't mention dashlane https://www.dashlane.com/ I hear good things and it's passed review at a few companies who know their stuff, but that's all I know.

reconbot··on Hacked Together 118 GB Floppy Disk
"What's a pay phone?" is a phrase you'll hear from time to time too.
reconbot··on Security Notification and Linode Manager Password Reset
Not to throw fuel on the fire but grumbling ex-employees aren't surprised. I've heard a few stories about not investing in infrastructure or even bug fixes. "They wont even look at bug fixes with major support costs." I know it's hard to triage what to do when running a company but when employees are proud of their product a breach like this isn't surprising.
reconbot··on Destructuring and Recursion in ES6
It's hard to believe this is javascript. I write that with a lot of love. These are some of my favorite language features but It's going to take some adjustment to be comfortable using and reading them in JS.
reconbot··on On some LCD monitors this will cause them to emit a tone (epilepsy warning)
Any thought that this might damage our monitors?
reconbot··on Ko1 at RubyConf 2014: Massive Garbage Collection Speedup in Ruby 2.2
You're right. Also they symbols won't be garbage collected if they are currently keys in a hash.
reconbot··on Z Launcher
That's a stupid amount of data. I kind of wish I didn't care about all that, but taking a copy of my contacts and location it just rubs me the wrong way. It's not worth it.
reconbot··on Announcing Keyless SSL
That's Hardware Security Module.
reconbot··on Modernizing “less”
It's crazy to me that something as core as less has such bit rot. I'm aware GNU rebuilt a bunch of tools a while ago and added a slew of common features such as `-h` for human readable mode, and `--` long arguments. Does this rewrite have a name yet? and can it be brought into the core project at all? (or the GNU project?)
reconbot··on Configuring Rails Environments
I love this, I recently wrote about it too. It allows for a much easier time for new developers coming on to your project, and I think it makes everyone else have an easier time too.

reconbot··on Meet Steven, the context-aware, lifelogging emoji app
That's a reasonable response. I've got another vote for android, but I'll hold onto it and be jealous of my iphone friends. They seem to be enjoying it.
reconbot··on Standard Markdown
I think this is great, I'm all for extending markdown for specific situations but I think the base h1, li, and p tags should be clearly defined. It appears that most parsers could adopt most of the spec without breaking backwards compatibility. (I'm probably wrong.)

There's an obvious annoyance with markdown like this, where a lack of a blank line after the headlines causes problems but only in a few parsers. I'm glad to see most of them do the right thing.

reconbot··on I Went from Grad School to Prison
I do see a cop coming up along side her and grabbing at her and then getting hit in the face. The handprint bruise on her chest paint a clearer picture than this grainy video. But we don't know what happened. I'll also say there's a big difference between an activist having trouble with the law and a thief or other criminal. She says she got grabbed and reacted, and didn't know who it was. She doesn't think you should hit cops either. Nothing you've brought up suggests other motives.
reconbot··on AAAS Blocking Access to the Scientific Literature When They Say It Is “Free”
I'm starting to get involved with The Winnower (thewinnower.com) their goal is to provide an open peer reviewed processes for publication while providing all the services of a large journal (DOI, help finding reviewers, etc). A lot of people seem to be self publishing on blogs but that lacks authority (and the review processes). We're trying to change that because the current system sucks and there was ever a case for "information wants to be free" this is it.
reconbot··on BMW Launches Its Answer to Tesla’s Supercharger Network
I'm fine with this. Happy even.

There is more than one way to build our charging infrastructure and we don't yet know how it's going to work best. Tesla's require a lot of power, BMW's doesn't. Our electric grid can support different amounts of power in different locations. Our driving behaviors haven't yet dictated what's going to work best. Etc etc.

I think the cost of adapting charges to work with multiple models of car is low and the benefits of experimentation at this early stage is high.

reconbot··on Localizing Papers, Please
It's a way of being humble. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_two_cents

the user of the phrase hopes to lessen the impact of a
possibly contentious statement, showing politeness and
  humility.
reconbot··on I/O Thoughts
If we're sharing podcast apps, DoggCatcher the podcast player is probably the best one on android.
reconbot··on Hoodie – Fast web app development
Moving from a request based business logic to data based business logic (processing incoming data, as opposed to processing incoming http requests) is an interesting shift. Does anyone know what this kind of system is called? I'd love to do more research.
reconbot··on Functional JavaScript, Part 4: Function Currying
Unless you're in tight loops you wont notice this perf hit. Disk, Network, and DOM manipulation will be the 99% time sinks.
reconbot··on Hacker News Nation – Weekly HN highlights on YouTube
It's a great vibe and an easy way to catch up if you don't get to read HN every day. (I may be biased however, I was in the audience one day)
reconbot··on My Role as CTO of Flatiron School and Flatiron Labs
Taking over where the school leaves off. I like this idea.
reconbot··on Popcorn Time Is So Good at Movie Piracy, It’s Scary
A lot of these are solved problems. In one neighborhood in NYC the local mesh wifi was able to provide better internet service than Verizon. http://rhicenter.org/redhookwifi/

Bittorrent could be scoped to the country too, it doesn't have to seed or download across the ocean.
