rebelidealist··on Sachin Kulkarni Describes the Architecture Behind Facebook Live
FB Live works really well but the playback for regular videos often gets stuck on the FB mobile. Not seeing the same problem on youtube or the mobile web version of FB.
rebelidealist··on Ask HN: I don't want to be a founder anymore
A business should work for you. Find a team of smart people. Gradually train them to replace you.
rebelidealist··on Ask HN: Is it possible for a non-programmer to bootstrap a SaaS business alone?
As a founder of 6 figure MRR SaaS, it is possible if you can hire good developers overseas for less. That said it is really useful if you know a little code or have someone who can vet good coders for you. Take your time with hiring.

rebelidealist··on Ask HN: What inspires you to persevere through adversity?
Working on projects that is very useful for other groups of people rather than yourself. When you think less about yourself you get paralyzed less and move forward.
rebelidealist··on Learn Elixir with a Rubyist (IV) – Types, Data Structures and Pattern Matching
As a Ruby programmer trying to take a look at Elxir, i still find it hard to read. Maybe functional languages take time to get used to but it doesn't seem as "clear" as procedure or oop style. I know the added benefit of speed and concurrency, but for most apps we build it is not needed for now.

Do any Ruby programmer find Elxir easier to write or read? Im genuinely curious to hear about this because a lot of Ruby devs are writing Elixir.

rebelidealist··on RethinkDB: why we failed
I get that they are saying the cloud offering is hard, but if they didn't have that, what was their business model? Were they relying on support and consulting fees? Consulting is hard to scale.

Cloud offering with build-in redundancy (herokudb, RDS, Redis Cloud) is what most app stakeholders are looking for. We want to try RethinkDb but we don't want to deal with servers.

If rethinkdb is good, i hope someone can resurrect this as a cloud service.

Take their advice but be warned that bootstrapping and mimicking their success is also hard.

We are a huge fan of Basecamp (customer for 5+ year), DHH, Jason, and Rails. However, please also consider the unique talents that they had.

Both Jason and DHH have exceptional skills. Jason is a great writer, designer, and speaker. DHH, the creator of Ruby on Rails is a renowned programmer. Some of the advantages that they had

1. They were the one of the first company to put project management on the "cloud" (early mover advantage)

2. The 37signal team are great writers. Their main advice they had for marketing is blogging. Some of us, especially foreign born founders, can't write as well.

3. 37signals had one of the most famous programmer at that time. (expertise and marketing advantage).

4. They have been honing basecamp for 15 years.

For the rest of us who aren't exceptional ourselves or don't have a brilliant partner we might need some outside funding so we can hire the best talent. Some of us want to do more than having one exceptional products for 15 years.

Anyone know how this is even technically feasible for a giant app like Linkedin to separate out a portion of their data in Russia?
rebelidealist··on Let’s Encrypt 2016 in Review
Our company made a small donation of $25 per month. https://letsencrypt.org/donate/

It is a small token of how much time they saved us from setting up ssl for our clients. These small monthly donations can add up help them thrive in the future.

rebelidealist··on Rails 5.0.1 has been released
Why use js in the backend if you don't have to? It's hard to read, maintain, and debug.
rebelidealist··on Ask HN: I will quit my job as a PM to join a coding bootcamp. Am I crazy?
NOT crazy at all. Actually this is a very good idea. Being able to code makes you a much better PM and help you gain respect of engineers. It will also will help you become a better tech entrepreneur or exec if you ever choose to be.

Having some kind of hard technical skill very important. It help you tackle harder problems that arises in the future. For example let say AI becomes increasingly important. Since you know some code, you ability to lead in this a new technical field will be better than someone with no technical ability.

FYI i'm a coder and founder of a software company. Most of my time is spend on PM now.

When you get institutional investors your shareholders becomes liquid. When a company goes public, new shareholders (banks, funds, individuals) want growth FOREVER.

Thiel thinks several steps ahead like a chessmaster. Donating to Trump is likely an effort to thwart the current money influenced political system not about morals.

IMO, Trump will stumble and fall with every step like he already is right now.

rebelidealist··on Debt-Laden Millennials Want Their Own Startups but Can’t Afford Them
The good news is that i don't believe doing a startup out of college is the best idea. Startups serving millennial are way over saturated. There are bigger and more important problems in areas that college grads haven't experienced yet. Get a job at a growing industry that you are interested in. Don't take the job just based on salary. Learn the ins and out of your trade. When you are ready to take the plunge your startup will have a better chance of being useful. Your insider experience and network will be a competitive advantage.

rebelidealist··on Google Profits Surge on Strong Ad Demand
Serious question: How does Google's ad revenue increase when Google themselves were saying people aren't clicking on adwords as much when searching in mobile? Also when people are using voice search such as Siri or Google Now, they are not even seeing the ad results.
