read_wharf··on The many faces of git rebase
"At this point, we're stuck with all of git's quirks, until something new comes along that's significantly better in enough fundamental ways to displace it."

A better git than git?

git done right?

read_wharf··on Toothache anyone? It's time for a vacation
Medical tourism, from the States to elsewhere, has been a "thing" for some time, maybe a decade(?). I'm sure it's been done individually by out of the box thinkers well before that.

It's great that businesses like in the article are making this a bit more accessible and known, it will put some cost pressure on Stateside providers. Also help people save some money by going outside the States, or even get care that just would not happen otherwise.

read_wharf··on Ask HN: How would you manage the law using version control?
Well, first of all, I wouldn't, because Congress would insist on using Microsoft Source Safe, backed up to Zip drives. Talk about a corrupt Congress ...
read_wharf··on Why The TSA Fears Thirteen-Inch Laptops, But Not Eleven-Inch Ones
No, that sort of says something about why they differentiate, but it doesn't say anything at all about why they fear.
read_wharf··on How do you explain the concept of logarithm to primary school students?
All the attempts focused on syntax and mechanics.

How logarithms are used might be a better introduction.

read_wharf··on Open Letter to XSLT Fans
Is that because most people can "see" the solution in most programming languages, but most people can't see solutions in XSLT except by experimenting?
read_wharf··on Why The TSA Fears Thirteen-Inch Laptops, But Not Eleven-Inch Ones
The headline claims to explain why the TSA "fears" 13 in laptops, but does not do that.
read_wharf··on Understanding TPP, ACTA's nastier, more secret little brother
Opinion, and somewhat OT: I think a lot of people who would/are naturally against these sorts of agreements and laws are also Obama supporters. The Obama administration doesn't just support these laws, it soaks in them. This is among the worst results of voting for one candidate because he's not the other candidate.

We need to start voting our real interests, not our negative interests.

What language is that? I don't find 'var' as a listed Python keyword:

read_wharf··on Ask HN: What do you do on your commute?
I drive. On good days I sing with the radio. On bad days I will myself to keep the car pointed toward work.

read_wharf··on Programming is hard, let's go scripting..
"Coming to asking people forcefully shorten their code blocks. It's none of language's business to dictate its style on me and steal my freedom. A language is supposed to behave the way I want. That's its very purpose."

    if True:
        x = 1
[copy the above line, paste it 999,998 times]
        x = 1

    print x
Python runs that and doesn't say anything about by block length; it just behaves the way I want and prints x (after a short pause). What are you talking about?
read_wharf··on Redditors who are rich (net worth $1 million+) - how did you get rich?
I drive a 22 year old nothing special, original owner. That's four cars that I didn't buy, at 5 years, 10 years, 15 years and 20 years. Four expenses avoided, four consumptions of steel and other resources avoided. I get 36 MPG, plus or minus a few.

I don't know if that's lucky, but I think it's worked out very well.

I am, however, not rich.

"No equivalent of CPAN."

Not exactly the same, but the standard library is extensive:

http://docs.python.org/library/index.html

There is pypi:

http://pypi.python.org/pypi

whose packages can either be installed directly or with pip.

What a great book. I'm skimming the ebook now, and it makes me want to pick up Perl again.

Anyone aware of a similar book for Python? For when I, you know, come back to Python after straying into Perl for a few years?

read_wharf··on Programming is hard, let's go scripting..
Although Python is taking more of these roles over time, Perl is still the thing that holds much of the internet's infrastructure and tools together, as well as internal servers, so it's a good thing to know if you're interested in all that.

Me too, exactly, and I'm only contributing a me too because a) it really bugs me too, and b) I think it's important for blog and site owners to understand this and fix it. I want to find your site; help me.

read_wharf··on Ask HN: I want to divorce Google for mail. Recommendations on hosting providers?
pair.com has very generous limits on how many addresses you can have per account.
read_wharf··on Ask HN: I want to divorce Google for mail. Recommendations on hosting providers?
Cool. I just tested that on my fastmail address and it works. read_wharf+hey@fastmail.fm

Even cooler, I don't use my fastmail address, I use my own domain and point it at fastmail, and that still works. real_name+hey@mydomain.com

Edit: none of those are real addresses. :)

How long is Yahoo going to be in business?
read_wharf··on Ask HN: I want to divorce Google for mail. Recommendations on hosting providers?
I migrated from fastmail.fm, very happy with it. I don't know what plus addressing is.

I have also used pair.com for my email in the past, they do a very good job of that.

I'm not aware of an email provider, other than google, that also does calendar synch. That's frustrating because it's such a natural fit, even though the two techs are different.

You could consider a shared hosting account on pair.com, and install/run your own calendar.

Edit: I think google must be fastmail's best source of new customers.

read_wharf··on 8 Reasons To Choose A Startup Over A Corporate Job
I work at a large technical corporation. It manifests every corporate stereotype you can imagine (and somewhere in there it makes devices that save lives).

As I read this article I couldn't help thinking of a young, very bright new hire in our group, his first real-ish job. While I don't have the connection with him to say this, I wish I could tell him that "this" (BigCo) is not the only way to work; get thee to a startup or SmallCo.

"H.B. 2549 would make it a crime to use any electronic or digital device to communicate using obscene, lewd or profane language or to suggest a lewd or lascivious act if done with intent to “annoy,” “offend,” “harass” or “terrify.”

Dear Arizona legislative twit, I write to you via my electronic digital device to annoy and offend you by calling attention to the brain dead legislation you have sponsored. You may look forward to weekly harassing emails on this and other subjects. This is meant to terrify you regarding your re-election prospects. You may now take your legislation and do you know what with it, you know where; please interpret that in the most obscene, lewd and profane way available to your limited imagination.
