rdedev··on How Spotify Killed Lo-Fi Hip Hop
Atleast for me the repetition is the point. It's calm enough when I'm working but I get a little jolt of joy whenbi recognise a groove I really liked before
rdedev··on uBlock Origin GPL code being stolen by team behind honey browser extension
Afaik the scam is honey telling users they find the best coupon but also letting shops dictate what coupons honey shows to the user. If I remember it right, the video also shows honey replacing the attribution cookie with its own even if it did not find any coupon
rdedev··on After 3 Years, I Failed. Here's All My Startup's Code
Doesn't this thinking also lead to the eventual enshittification of their product? Hyperscalar growth will eventually stop. At that point to justify your valuation you need to start screwing over customers
rdedev··on California teacher dies from suspected rabid bat bite
The main issue is that if you get bit you definitely need a rabies vaccine to live. Medicine it not the same as food or clothing. It is inelastic in nature. If I'm hungry I can eat a steak or an apple. When it comes to medicine we rarely have that opportunity.
rdedev··on Scientists are learning why ultra-processed foods are bad
The lack of fibre also contributes to lack of satiety which is another driving factor that makes people eat more processed food.

The potato chip satiety issue is also investigated in a few studies. Baked potato is some of the most satiating foods. But when you fry it in oil it just does something to your brain that makes you crave for more

rdedev··on DOJ will push Google to sell off Chrome
I have random loading issues when I try to play something on the YouTube shorts page. The audio would play but not the video. Refreshing the page sometimes fixed this
rdedev··on The unknowns surrounding the mysterious rise of cancer in young adults
When it comes to dealing with any biological systems always look for outcomes over mechanisms. There is plenty of evidence showing exercise improves almost all markets of health
rdedev··on 'Model collapse'? An expert explains the rumours about an impending AI doom
While that could be an explanation I am not fully sold on that idea. For example we don't get continuous streams of information on something like abstract math but we still dona decent job with it without going through millions of math problems.

If multi modality gets us through this phase then you are right in your analysis. Let's see what come out in the next 5 years

rdedev··on Alien – CUDA-powered artificial life simulation program
If someone is interested in building something like this but don't know where to start I would suggest https://natureofcode.com/

It's targeted towards beginners and uses a JS library but the ideas presented are general

rdedev··on We're Cutting L40S Prices in Half
I don't know what platform vast.ai uses but what I have noticed is cpu compute is pretty slow in those. Specifically the tokenization stage was unusually slow for no apparent reason. Had to give that up and use Google cloud for my research project
rdedev··on Daily marijuana use linked to increased risk of deadly head and neck cancers
Oral route is not the same as breathing the stuff though. Not saying there is no risk but would be reduced
rdedev··on macOS Sequoia makes it harder to run not notarized or signed apps
The usual arguments I hear for this is grandma or kid following these specific instructions and installing a malware. But how many attacks make use of these?
rdedev··on If Fever Helps Fight Infection, Should I Avoid Fever-Reducing Drugs? (2018)
Take the wound scenario. If you bandage it up but start getting a fever the next day then its a new symptom and it's better you see a doc
rdedev··on If Fever Helps Fight Infection, Should I Avoid Fever-Reducing Drugs? (2018)
Should have clarified the last sentence. If things get worse or any new symptoms come up within that 3 days start something or see a doc
rdedev··on If Fever Helps Fight Infection, Should I Avoid Fever-Reducing Drugs? (2018)
My goto protocol is, wait for 3 days before starting any meds. If symptoms get worse than tolerable or new symptoms pop up then start some thing.
rdedev··on An experiment in UI density created with Svelte
I had initially used plotly to build my dashboard but switched over to bokeh mostly because it's really hard to make plotly express api work with the graph objects api. Bokeh is pretty new though so ymmv but I have been liking the apk so far
rdedev··on Taking my diabetes treatment into my own hands
Is it conclusively proven that glucose spikes influence the risk of T2D by a big margin? Like imo calorie balance is more influential than glucose spike. This is all assuming that you are currently healthy. I don't think spiking blood glucose is a good idea of you are diabetic
rdedev··on Researcher finds flaw in a16z website that exposed some company data
It's not the same. Figuring out a bagpack is open takes no effort. Finding a backdoor takes a lot of effort.
rdedev··on For the Colonel, It Was Finger-Lickin’ Bad (1976)
This was a shock to me. During college back in India I had a friend who used to live in Canada. When I suggested going to McD for food, he was like no it's too trashy and the food is bad. I couldn't believe that cause the lines at McD were long.

After coming to the US I understood what he meant. Burger king in India is almost gourmet compared to what you get in USA

rdedev··on FUTO Keyboard
Is there a tangible difference between source first / source available and open source? Afaik if you are just a normal developer and not a company it's pretty much the same?
rdedev··on Python grapples with Apple App Store rejections
The multi billion dollars company that I work for don't get this. I'm forced to do all me dev work on a virtual windows machine. They have their reasons, many of them valid, but it's still a pain
rdedev··on Traffic engineers build roads relying on outdated research, faulty data
There are always going to be bad drivers cars and bikes included. The deterrence or responsibility of driving a large vehicle is ignored by the bad driver The deterrence or responsibility of driving a large vehicle is ignored by the bad driver. The point of the article is that we can set an upper limit to the total damage done in a accident by having better roads and cars.
rdedev··on Enhancing Code Completion for Rust in Cody
Looking at their GitHub page or seems like they are using existing LLM services. It should be possible to modify cody to make it work with a local llm
rdedev··on Do not try to be the smartest in the room; try to be the kindest
I don't know if kindness is the right word you have used here. HR is not kind. At the end of the day they don't care about you. But they speak to you nicely. Same for the government too I guess

rdedev··on Ogma: Interpretable Symbolic General Problem-Solving Model
Can't blame them too much since every other paper points to the fact that more parameters and data is the way forward to new SOTA results.

We have probably reached the limit of scraping publicly available English training data from the Internet. OpenAI is betting on synthetic data. Let's see where that takes them. The sad part is companies like OpenAI only makes money if the answer to AGI is large models and large data. I don't know if they have unknowingly restricted their ideas on AGI based on that

rdedev··on Llama3 implemented from scratch
My wish is they would move on to the next phase. The whole deal with SSMs look really good. But looking for better architects is countered with "a regular architecture with more parameters are doing better. What's the point of this"
rdedev··on Microsoft closes several large Bethesda affiliated game studios
A regression to the mean where mean is just whatever makes most money. I can understand if they are at the risk of going bankrupt but this seems so premature
rdedev··on What can LLMs never do?
At some point if you need to generate better text you need to start creating a model of how the world works along with some amount of reasoning. The "it's just a token generator" argument fails to get this part. That being said I don't think just scaling LLMs are going to get us AGI but I don't have any real arguments to support that
rdedev··on The Landscape of Machine Learning on ArXiv
I created something like this for my data engineering class project. It was a temporal visualization of citation networks. It was fun to see different domains like computer vision and nlp be seemingly separate but then as time went on become pretty coupled with each other
